Welcome Amber Rose. I sure hope that's an artificial "real life" looking christmas tree with the lights already on and easy hinged construction!!!!! If it's a live tree you bought it's going to be one sorry mess by the time 12/25 rolls around, no matter HOW much you steep it in water and keep trimming the trunk so it sucks the water in. Although maybe if you dipped it in glycerine and froze it, that would work...

Who Will Be Celebrating Thanksgiving & XMas This Year???
by minimus infunny thing about jws----many celebrate thanksgiving but say they're only eating turkey with all the fixings by coincidence.
god made the food to be consumed everyday.
then you get witnesses who celebrate christmas the day before or after with all sorts of presents but they won't give it on the 25th because that day is pagan.

To: JWs who are dating non-JWs. What are you thinking?
by Lady Lee inwe have a few ubm (unbelieving mates) here on jwd.
new ones join up and post here hoping to find out what is going on, what are all these crazy rules?
why has my mate gone back to the wts?..

I think it's all about hormones. Let's face it, as a JW woman, the choice of mate SUCKED BIG TIME. Everyone knows about the imbalance in membership numbers between men JWs and women JWs. So, if you didn't want to fornicate and live a "double life" (ha, what a joke!) and you didn't want to marry one of the few available schmucks in the Circuit - or move and try your luck elsewhere, competing against younger and hotter sisters, the logical choice is a non-JW male.
Well, I got mine. Whooo whooo!

My Wedding
by VanillaMocha73 inso, my mom's trailer flooded last week and her congregation lifted not a finger to assist.
she was given 30 minutes to evac.
she made it out with her clothes on her back and her cats.

I am absolutely INCENSED on your behalf, VanillaMocha. Those assholes. By the time the congregation got there, was there anything left to save? What a bunch of vicious, low-life losers. Given the way gossip traveld in congregations, I'm sure at least SOME knew that they picked your wedding day to show up to "help" your mom. I am so sorry. The best revenge is to have had a great wedding despite them.

Who is Philip Brumley?
by Honesty inironic, isn't it.. http://www.freedommag.org/english/vol32i1/page14.htm.
philip brumley, general counsel for the jehovahs witnesses, testified how the jehovahs witnesses in austria moved through the political and legal court systems for a decade towards obtaining the same religious status as other religions.
just as they were getting to the point of obtaining this religious status, the national legislature of austria convened and passed a law which imposes a 10-year waiting period for any organization seeking full religious recognition.

I found the following information from the New York State Bar Association Website, info for Philip Brumley; in addition, I learned through a google search that he was born in 1956, so he is 50 years old. If my math is right, he was 32 when he graduated law school. There is no information given about where he earned his undergraduate degree or when.

My dear father died on November 3, 2002, when I was still a JW in good standing. He was nominally a Roman Catholic, but the family did not hold a religious ceremony for him. There was a "viewing" at a local funeral home and then the following day Dad was interred in a Veteran's Cemetery in SE Wisconsin, after a very moving ceremony. Even if he had been buried from the Vatican and I would have had to kiss the Pope's feet I would have attended, no way in hell was I going to miss my Dad's wake and funeral.
I don't know why, exactly - perhaps it was because Dad, who was 80 when he died, represented one of an entire generation of WWII veterans in the US, who - then, were dying at the rate of 1,500 a month (must be a higher rate now). Dad had been wounded and was awarded a Purple Heart and also was awarded 3 Bronze Stars. As a child, I recall him one time showing me the scar where the bullet had gone into his upper right thigh. Dad said they never did get the bullet out, but since Dad was a bit of a story teller I never did know if that's true. I do know he suffered severe frost bite of his feet while in Europe and had problems with them for the rest of his life.
Anyway, a reporter from the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel was writing a story and my Dad's memorial at the Veteran's Cemetery was featured in the paper, in a story that talked about the lack of veterans and/or other people who are available to play "Taps" at veterans' funerals. We were fortunate - we had a real person play Taps on the trumpet; many veterans have to make-due with a person who appears to be playing Taps on the horn but it is actually a recording.
There were a couple of photographs in the newspaper taken at the burial memorial while Taps was being played. I miss my Dad. He was a Magnificent Man. Here's a link to the story http://www.jsonline.com/story/?id=94921 (if that works).

Welcome to the forum.
You said you were a JW when you left - left where? Iraq? Did you convert to JW when you were in Iraq? Or were you a JW when you left for Iraq? In which case, what were you doing in the military if you were/are a JW?

P.S. The California court ruling does NOT mean that the database is open for public scrutiny. You can be sure that the defendants will - if they ultimately lose this at the appeals court level - will have the court put protective orders in place so that the information in the database is NOT put into the public court record and will NOT be shared with anyone other than counsel involved in the law suits. Typically information that is "discovered" by depositions, written interrogatories, etc. according to local discovery rules (or the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure) - are NOT put into the court record for public access; these materials are used in the development of a prosecution or defense strategy including developing witness lists and also to impeach witnesses' testimony.
The important thing to keep in mind with respect to this ruling is that the court denied the defendants the use of clergy-penitant privilege to prevent pertinent information from being made available to plaintiffs' counsel. That is the key.

Well, good luck. Whoever wrote that press release needs to go back and take eighth grade grammar over again. Sorry to criticize, but what a piss-poor job of writing on such an important topic! If THIS is what is being mailed out to JWs around the world, geez! Who is running things over at Silent Lambs that would let something like this be published???

What is the real reason behind the WTS' move out of Brooklyn?

Minister Amos said:
Was it $200 MILLION they got for the converted WW2 tank factory? And REMEMBER KIDDIES! NOOOOOO TAXES because they are a "religion"
I recently did some research on the WTBTS's real estate holdings in Brooklyn - think it was around October 25th in the "Friends" section, maybe you can find it. There have been three parcels sold in Brooklyn; the Society owns several more. The largest one did go for over $200,000,000. As for an estimate of the remaining properties' fair market value, it's anyone's guess. I constructed a table showing the "assessed valuation" of the parcels, but since the Society does not pay any real estate taxes, the City hasn't been very current in updating assessed valuations. I think the parcels have at least a billion in value, maybe more, if the Society sell everything. But they're not doing it all at once; they don't want to depress the market, after all! Will the Society hold on to at least a few "token" buildings in the area? I guess that depends upon how much the real estate continues to appreciate. Hell, instead of pilgrimages to Brooklyn, the Society can work some deals with witness-owned travel agencies and start running pilgrimages out to Patterson and Walkill. What would the faithful among the r&f care?
I haven't done any research on what information is available about the Society's real estate holdings in Patterson and Walkill, but just from a common sense point of view, I'm sure the Society bought that land when it was dirt cheap, literally out in the middle of nowhere, and the Society is pocketing all the excess profits between what it has cost it to do the build-up in Patterson and Walkill, and what it has made by selling parcels in Brooklyn. As to whether there are offshore accounts, there is no way to know, unless someone "inside" would tell us, because in the United States the Society is not even required to file an "information" return showing gross receipts and gross disbursements.
