Della - when my mom was alive I went, and the rest of the non-JW family went to the memorial. She wouldn't understand the reasoning why it doesn't matter and it made her soooo happy she could get us all there. She would be so crushed and imagine all sorts of awful things. She was already so worried about our destruction...for that I hate the WT. Needless worry and fear they instill in people.

Memorial Attendance: The Single Most Impactful TTATT "Witness" to Family and Friends
by AMNESIANO inanyone who has awakened to ttatt and conscientiously left the organization--especially a once-prominent individual from a prominent multi-generational tribe of jws-- after decades of devout, high-profile "serve-us," who continues to put in an annual appearance at the memorial thoroughly subverts and undermines, by this one act, any hope s/he may entertain that his/her departure will stir family or former friends to question the whole watchtower bamboozle.
by this one concession s/he assigns him-/herself by every single jw to their handy and dimissive purgatory: the "spiritually-weak.".
nothing blasts a louder, clearer, and more deliberate message to the jws who personally knew you and those familiar with your jw bona fides that you are not merely "not making the meetings" or "spiritually-weak" but that there is a conscientious reason you have rejected the entire watchtower society life than choosing to forego what they know you know to be their one-and-only holy and sacred event of the year, the lord's evening meal.

I received my FIRST memorial invitation left at my door in the 13 years I have lived there!
It seems hilarious now in retrospect, the "excitement" over this special campaign in making sure EVERYBODY is invited to this irrelevant occasion. Wouldn't want anyone to miss out on it!

I agree to explore Facebook. I used to get a little sad going down the JW rabbit hole of seeing former friends. But I think that has finally passed.
Just last December I was contacted by a friend who left about 30 years ago, which opened up the way for about a dozen more connections from the old hall, teen years. It's been really nice seeing their names and comments regularly, and chatting about the old and new days. They were much smarter than I was leaving years ago. sigh.
Just put in some names and see what happens!

The good ol' 124.
I was there in 2005, I think, and they were doing a lot of construction on the building converting the dorms to singles.
The workers were so dour. Very unlike the workers in years gone by. Understandably grumpy.
Buh bye.

I was quite tolerant of this guy until now
by never a jw inpresident trump is definitely a demagogue, a populist, and not a great extemporaneous speaker, just to mention few of his more conspicuous flaws.
however, i was going along because "it's the economy stupid".
now that has changed.

DT is a lousy, failed hotelier who thinks he knows more than he does...about everything. He doesn't bother learning about economics or repercussions of actions he wants to take. It didn't matter in the past, because he would just sue people. Ai yi yi...this guy.

The WT twist the verses at Matt. 24:45-51, by telling the flock that THEY are to be judged as to how they treat the "faithful and discreet/wise servant." They use it to instill fear yet the scripture says no such thing. The servant is the one who will be judged as to how he is treating the domestics.
I've used this every time an elder/anyone asked me if I recognize the FDS as god's channel etc. I tell them it isn't important what I think of the "slave" according to the scripture. What is important is how the slave treats those he is in charge of. They change the subject rather quickly.

I'm pretty sure he's all in.

The 1995 generation change was when I knew for sure they were making everything up. I hung in analysing the Watchtower mag more and more in the following years. At a Sunday meeting one day I had a moment of clarity where I knew I didn't belong there, I couldn't teach what they were teaching, and my whole life as I knew it would change. I never went back.

Please Switch Off Your Critical Thinking

Interesting thread and responses.
I think the WTBS move to video is brilliant. As they see the need to dissolve more and more congos, they could have a standard weekly meeting direct from mother for everybody to watch on TV and not have to physically attend a night meeting. WTBS can report their made up numbers without anyway to verify, and appear to still be going strong. They are half way there already.
They are really trying to figure out a way to keep the adherents engaged to feel what they are doing is relevant, with the least amount of investment from GQ - all under the guise of "simplification" and "Jah providing what is needed at the proper time."
People seemed to be thrilled at the relaxed demands of FS, trolleys/carts, tablet witnessing, reduced hours, and it appears more and more social as the demands ease up. At least that is what I see when I check people out on FB, I could be wrong. As the demands relax, they are less critical of mother.
