Former Jehovah's Witness admits: We targeted grief-stricken as 'ripe fruit'
by Londo111 inhttp://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/news/80708572/former-jehovahs-witness-admits-we-targeted-grief-stricken-as-ripe-fruit.
jehovah's witnesses target grief and see the recently bereaved as "ripe fruit" for conversion, a former elder of the faith says.. vince and michele tylor spoke out after reading the story of wellington woman jean sergent-shadbolt, who received a handwritten letter from a jehovah's witness three months to the day after her step-cousin, friend and flatmate died.. a current senior elder of the faith says it has no policy to target grieving, and those who do so are acting on their own initiative.
however, he concedes such people may feel guided by jehovah's witness literature.. but vince tylor said he knew of members who would trawl though obituaries to find grieving people, or visit cemeteries.. "not only do we see watchtower printed material suggesting and supporting writing letters from obituaries such as what jean received, but we even have reports and articles of encouragement for jws to go to cemeteries to look for people as well.".

In my experience with death and their loved ones, (which is way too many right now), most people believe that there is a hereafter. What they are dealing with is the grief/sadness of losing the loved one.
The purpose of the JW contact in these instances is to (1.) count time, (2.) to make sure the grieving ones get the correct information about where their dead ones are.
We had a sudden and horrific death in our family which had tons of local and national media attention as well as politicians and with many communities. We experienced such an outpouring of support and love, it was unbelievable. The mother of someone involved in the incident was a JW. Her only contact was to send scriptures and tracts. I believe she was sincere in her concern, but equally entitled to get her JW message to us. It's just so different from the hundreds who wanted to just comfort, most believing our person was in heaven and around us.
It's the disconnect JW's have that continues to astound me.

In the territory of my old hall was a very large cemetery, Forest Lawn. You better believe those pioneers worked it, and they loved it.

A Coin With a Remarkable History
by cofty inover the years i have shared a few examples of objects i have found while metal detecting near my home in northumberland in ne england.
i live in a rural estate that was the site of a medieval village with a manor house and defensive tower.
many of the things i find illustrate the amazing history of the location.

Thought on “0 hours” reporting
by FFGhost inso everyone knows the “big news” of this past weekend, no more reporting of hours, placements, return visits, etc.
beginning november 1, jws just tick a box indicating whether they “shared in any form of the ministry during the month”.. so there was a brief comment by a redditor that seems like a brief joke “throwaway comment” but after thinking about it….why not?.
the idea is, what is “any form of the ministry”?

I don’t believe the corporation cares at all about the R & F at any personal level, only at the grand total of “active” they can use for their charity status.
As the source of qualified men diminish, they will prob revisit the body of elders model. They already have alternative ways of handling matters when needed. Canned programming is already in place for meetings whether in person or by zoom and fewer men are needed. Is there still a ministry school? I’m so out of touch. They can just have an online course at the org, since D2D is no longer important.
I wonder what some elder and full time servants, and pioneers think. Does any of it matter anymore? The business model, and it is a business first, will evolve to preserve the corporation.

Interesting story in todays New York Times that gives some insight into the religious soup of the 1800s that Watchtower arose from.

fascinating read and background of new york state in the 1800s.
this community welcomes mediums, but first you have to prove yourself.

I didn’t think of that. But it was all happening at the same time. Makes sense…always looking for the special revelation of future and past.

J.W org and Noah's Flood
by Phizzy ini remember when i was "in" the org.
had a ridiculous public talk outline defending the genesis flood myth.. do they have a current one doing that ?.
-

Oh the flood...
Even as a kid I could not figure out how that crazy story could happen...right along being swallowed by a big fish and living to tell about it!
But miracles are miracles and if you have faith in miracles...science doesn't matter.

There should be some interesting conversations if they start asking each other how many hours they did the past month.
Exactly what I was thinking about. Their WHOLE conversation will change, I think.
Years ago I was at a few JW functions and I realized that is all they talk about...where they went in service, where they went for break, did they go to the hall for cleaning etc. As an outsider looking in, I realized I had absolutely nothing in common with them anymore, and nothing to talk about. It helped me move forward.
So now what will they have to talk about? I guess the FS pubs will still share their exciting D2D stories
