What do People Mean Exactly By "Spirit" and "Spiritual"

many people distance themselves from formal religion but say that they are a "spiritual" person.. .

similarly theists talk about the "spirit" as if it is something that is self-evidently true.. .

i wonder if anybody would like to have a go at defining what they mean by these words?

My take on what is spiritual is.

Some people have a relationship with a higher power, God.

And the basis is not found in a book or a religion.

Kind of like the Old American Indians who talk to and about the Great Spirit.

Spiritual people walk with the God of their understanding,

They dont need a group to validate their relationship and understanding of their higher power.

Man is triune being; spirit, soul and body.

The spirit is what differentiates us from other animals.

The spirit is the hole in us that we try to fill.

with drugs, alcohol, excitement, meaning, religion and all kinds of ism's.

Its a beautiful and rare thing when you find someone who has filled the hole with the proper sized object

as opposed to someone who fills a round hole with a square peg.

Hello Outlaw, I survived 75 and 76 was the catalyst for my escape and freedom.

I still have a bus load of inlaws stuck in the tower.

But there not blood, just out-laws.

I was 23 in 75, Born in the tower.

I had no idea how full of shxt they were until 1976, it took me until 1984 to process it,

retool and reinvent myself and escape.

Stick to your guns.

When I left the tower in 83, I didnt answer the door. I didnt take phone calls. I didnt talk to the friends at home depot.

Now almost 30 years latter. My witness family still talks to me. Never got disfellowshipped.

Just dont play their game.

My wife stayed in for 10 year after I left.

Now we are both out and Witness family still talk to us.

Neither of us have had any action taken against us.

Job suffering A ridiculous story.

job a man blameless and upright, one who feared god, and turn away from evil.

the fact that he is just and suffering breaks the logic relating god, evil,and the suffering of israel.

for ancient israel the logic of suffering then they must have sinned.

I always find the book of job upsetting and hard to make sense of.

Some comments on your comments.

There is a message in the bible that shxt happens.

Time and unforseen circumstances befall us all.

Maybe Job is just a long story to make that point.

The bible seems to say a lot of things about a lot of things

The bible says money is a protection.

Maybe its the love of money that is a sin.

If you love money so much that you hurt others to get it thats a sin.

But if you go about your business and accumulate some wealth, money thats a protection.

Your not living in the street.

I dont know how you feel about the bible if you feel God wrote the bible cover to cover than I can

see your being upset about the gambling analogy that you write about.

If you feel the bible is inspired by God then you can reason that ancient men trying to make sense out of life

wrote the book of Job.

God did not have to have anything to do with the book of Job, but the person that wrote it could still be inspired by

God.

I'm a musician, when I play my guitar I'm inspired by the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck etc. But they have nothing

to do with me or the music I make, they dont even know me, still I am inspired by them.

Thats kind of the way I see inspired by God.

Inspired by God can be good and it can be bad.

I like to think of God on one level as good orderly direction G.O.D.

The bible also says in Ecclesiastes, Eat drink and be merry for tomorrow you may die.

Lif is a roller coaster ride ups and downs, hills and valleys

and nobody knows you when your down and out.

Thats the book of job.

Hello Anthony Morris. I was born in in 52. Escaped in 81. My son got a college education with a masters in medicine.

I would have liked to have been a school teacher and had more time off through out my life.

The Watchtower robbed me also and many our age from the 60's.

Keep on truckin.

Is Economic Collapse going to happen this year?

It depends on your perspective, for me it happened with 911 and George Bush the dumber.

The stock market is pretty much where Clinton left it.

An investment in the stockmarket Van Guard sp 500 index fund from 1999 is pretty much the same place it was in 1999.

No growth in the US. At least in the broad markets.

From Reagan to Clinton, the Dow averaged 15% a year.

I work for the state which used to be a secure job.

No raise or cost of living adjustment in the past 6 years.

The souless, ghoulish, criminal govenor is hell bent on privatizing as many jobs as he can.

Buildings and homes are boarded up and empty every where I look.

I think I'll go buy some more silver today.

Wasting one's life on an ancient fantasy

i could not help but think of my devout witness wife when i saw this in yesterday's funny pages:.

it is reminiscent of something she said awhile back about being restored to all the glories of youth when the new system comes.

from my non-theist perspective this is a sad example of escapism.

Thats what we do in this dimension is waste time.

Everything is a waste and meaningless.

Thats what Solomon said.

I do think going to meetings and wasting time spreading confusion going out in field circus

is full tilt wasting time on steroids.

But to each his own.

I like music, I spend most of my time and energy with that.

Some folks lilke basetball, football, baseball, nascar.

What ever makes one happy and doesnt hurt their neighbor.

But witnesses do hurt their neighbor and loved ones with their legalism and refusing medical treatment.

To hell with Jehovahs witnesses.
