So writing a letter to the Society wouldn't result in anything being sent to me, you think? What a pain.

Ever know of a great family movie, the Witnesses found demons or evil in?
by free2beme ini remember growing up, the witness children were often ones that were left to see all those g rated movies from disney.
yet even those at time, while accepted by just about every religion out there, were considered demonic.
for example, the following movies were said to show witchcraft and in or congregation we were encouraged to discard them and not own copies of them; sleeping beauty, snow white, the little mermaid, bed knobs and broomsticks, and fantasia.

My First Earthquake and I Didn't Even Feel It
by Kenneson inthere was an 6.0 earthquake yesterday morning along the west coast of florida and you would know it i didn't even feel it.
it's really rather bizarre, as some people felt it and others didn't.
but, in a sense, i'm glad that it was nothing serious--at least no one was hurt and there was no damage.

I just moved here (Tampa Bay) from Florida a couple years ago, so I was probably the first to react to the shaking. My trembling hands -- for, you see, losing the earthquakes was a huge push to Florida -- dialed my husband, who thought I'd gone crazy. It took a full 30 minutes for the news to report it and settle the question of my sanity, which was annoying. NO ONE TOLD ME FLORIDA HAD EARTHQUAKES TOO!!
And how come no one's making that big a deal about it? The news teams are acting like it's a regular event.

Thoughts On Holidays...
by Sunspot inwe are all somewhat painfully aware of how the watchtower society views celebrating "normal" holidays that most other religions "normally" celebrate.. .
for those of you that were jws and did not participate in these holidays,.
do you celebrate them now?.

Holidays are PURELY secular for me. There are no religious rituals or ties that come into play for any of them. My favorite two are Christmas and birthdays (I lump this in under "holiday"). We do the lights, tree, etc. for Christmas, though this year will be my first to celebrate with my little boy (he'll be one then). So Santa will start being introduced, I think. I don't think I'll ever con my child into thinking Santa is real or anything, but I want my son to have the most traditional American Christmas experience I can create. I want the complete opposite from my December 25ths.
Halloween is something I've never cared to celebrate, simply because I like to avoid the fuss of dressing up, etc. But, with my son, I think it will become one of my favorite holidays.
The only one I'll probably never fully celebrate is Easter. An egg hunt for my son, maybe, but I'll never go to church that day or do anything unusual.

Did you block out your Witness life?
by achickwwit ini stopped going to meetings at age 19 or 20. my brother had been df'd.
my sister and her new bethalite husband had left the organization labeled as apostates, and my single mom followed suit.
i was pretty much raised by the congregation, though i lived with my isolated mother.

"Judicial committee meetings" -- see, this is interesting. I've literally erased certain terms and practices from my memory. It took some serious racking of my brain to recall what this even was, even though I was involved with a pretty serious one! In another thread, someone mentioned a presiding overseer -- this is something I haven't thought of even once in 10 years. My sister mentioned, um, yikes...I've forgotten the name of it...those plays that they would have at the district assemblies where people dressed up in Bible-times costumes...anyway, it was weird/funny/odd to hear that term again too.

Two questions:1) Is the New World Translation available on audio and, if so, in the French language?
2) Any idea how I can go about getting it ordered? I don't know of any Witnesses who would order it for me.
Anyway, I want to give this as a gift to my brother-in-law who still likes the New World Translation best.

Do YOU Still Act Like A Jehovah's Witness?
by minimus insome habits are hard to break.
many of us were raised as jws and when people try to 'put you down', they might say something like, "you're still acting like a witness".
i wonder whether or not we sometimes do exhibit witness "traits".

Such an interesting questions...with like responses.
Hmm...I still cannot watch any of the rated-R or "demonized" movies my mom wouldn't let me watch when I was young ("Mystic Pizza" [happened to be a big upset at the time!], "Gremlins," etc.). Even now, I can't watch movies with A LOT of cussing or heavy drug use or a ton of sex. Still haven't seen "Fargo" or "Pulp Fiction" all the way through, for instance.
Other than that, I'm REALLY open-minded as far as race. I truly am color-blind. But that's one of the best things I've hung on to. :-)

I stopped going to meetings at age 19 or 20. My brother had been DF'd. My sister and her new Bethalite husband had left the organization labeled as apostates, and my single mom followed suit. I was pretty much raised by the congregation, though I lived with my isolated mother. Eventually, I moved away from her, pretty much stopped talking to her and my sister, and tried to live a Witness life. Didn't work, and I finally stopped going to meetings when it no longer made sense to go.There was so much BAD associated with the Witnesses -- so many friends, aunts, uncles and cousins who left my family at the drop of a hat and who ultimately left me too -- that I have found that I've blocked out that life for over a decade now. Only recently have I started to appreciate the struggles I went through and deal with my weird relationship/trust issues.
Anyway, I just joined this message board and am hoping it will be theraputic for me. My life is actually pretty fabulous now, even though I'm just starting this process of recalling everything I loved/hated about the first 20 years of my life. Just curious when/if any of you blocked it out for a while.
