i have made a couple of remarks regarding family dynamics on other threads, but i thought it's be nice to start a new thread.... i'm no psychologist, but suffice it to say i see some similarities here.

(please add to/comment on these thoughts).

Notice, he's visiting his friends in other congs, even getting to spend the night! HELLO! They don't need to 'let' you; this is a normal part of growing up. I wish you had others to visit, though, except for other young JWs....Daddy and Mommy's control is an illusion that DLJ is submitting to at this point. DLJ, If you are in college, you shouldn't have to answer to your parents like you are a toddler!!!! They shouldn't be 'letting' you do anything! At this point, you should be almost totally independent of them with the exception of committing illegal or immoral acts while living in their home.

LDH, as long as I continue to live in my parent's home(sorry I didn't mention that. It might have some bearing on your viewpoint), I would hardly consider myself independent of them. I am under their roof, and therefore, under their rules.
I answer to them and am accountable to them because they are continuing to support me, although I am of age, and could move out on my own at any time. If I did so, my parents would no control over anything I do(obviously). I would have my own rules to live by, not theirs. My grandfather was like this, and he wasn't even a witness. I wish I'd gotten to meet him, though.

Hi Normie, thanx for the props.
One thing I noticed about the change in the faithful slave's position on college was that it wasn't really necessary at first. Back then, you could still get a decent job and support yourself with just a HS diploma.
But now, times are different. Even working full-time, it's almost impossible to support yourself without a college education, and the faithful slave realized that. And that point isn't just brought out in the magazines. My HS counselors even bugged me about it, but to a much greater degree.[>:(]

Thanks, Normie. I've been having to buckle down a bit for school, though. Midterms are coming up, so I won't be able to spend as much time here. But I'll try to come when I can.

I told her it was a fallacy, children need to have some level of independence in order to cultivate their own personalities.... Especially teens, whose personalities are often compromised by their parents desires.

I noticed that too. My parents are pretty good about that. They've let me take road trips to visit some of my friends in other congs that were hours away, even spending the night. I'm one of the fortunate ones, though. But sometimes I wear Dockers, really.

After my bachelors, I think I'll enter the 'rat race' for a time. Then I can actually think about getting married.lol No, she doesn't have to be a pioneer.hehe If she wants to though, fine. If not, that's cool too. I just want to have a job where she could if she wanted to...y'know, in case she changes her mind.
I may get MCSE certification first, however. It doesn't do you any good without a degree, but it can help if you've aleady got one. How much it helps will help me determine if it's worth getting or not(It costs $3k through my school;even more someplace else). If there's a need, I might take more classes after working a while. I attend the Unversity of Houston.

I understand what you two are getting at now. The funny thing is, my parents didn't really do much to pressure me to get baptized. They didn't bug me with 'Everyone else your age is getting dunked, why don't you?' They were really good about that. It was more of 'When you think you're ready to get baptized...' I will admit that looking back, I prolly was a bit young to get baptized. That's why I didn't bug my friends about it either. When they're ready to dedicate themselves to Jehovah(not the organization), they're ready. No one else can decide it for them.
I wasn't saying that baptism helped keep me out of trouble, I meant that Bible principles helped me. I have some friends in my hall that aren't baptized, and they stay out of trouble the same way.
It's tough to be a Witness, Mommy, I agree with you. But IMHO, it's more than worth it. I just don't see anything worth having outside of Jehovah's organization(there's me sounding hollow again!). Btw, I'm in school for computer info systems. I'm almost a junior.

Did your parents think it was ok for you to be married at this time as well? Able to take on the emotional, financial burden associated with it too?

No, baptism and marriage are quite different. I'll admit there are some emotional burdens, but what financial burdens are there? I spend much less money than if I smoked or did drugs, for example. I look at Bible principles as a protection from the troubles that I see other youths getting into. Recently, a fellow I went to high school with was sent to jail for a cross burning. Another one had a short jail term for helping to steal firearms from a friend's father and sell them in another state. It's my humble opinion that Bible principles help keep me out of situations like those.
But back OT...yes, my parents respected my decision to serve Jehovah for life, and are proud that I have lived up to that commitment thus far(As am I. it's been a tough, but worthwhile road.). And as for real marriage, no. I'm still single. I'm in college right now(yeah, yeah, I know about that issue too), and I want to wait until I'm done.

I bet you had the other little 12 year olds lined up waiting to get married too didn't you?

You meant 'baptized,' right? Actually, no. Most were baptized before I was, and are still doing quite well. One is now serving in the Dominican Republic(she had to learn Spanish.hehe), and her older brother is now a reg. pioneer. And if you meant real marriage, I didn't even know what the legal age for marriage was back then.hehe

I guess I just come here because I feel like talking sometimes. That's all.

Okay, I guess I'll finally go.

I was born in 1980, and raised in the organization. Amazingly, my parents became witnesses in 1975(yeah, yeah, I know about all the hooplah that year). Dad's been an elder for quite a while, now. He's the po for the cong, and the co for the city we live in. Mom's been a reg. pioneer since um...'87, I think. I keep forgetting. Grrr. No other relatives are witnesses, but when my grandmothers come to visit, they still go to the meetings with us(haven't been here in a while, though).
I dedicated my life to Jehovah by water baptism in 1992(Halloween, no less!), and was appointed as a ministerial servant in 1998. Right now, I've been handling the sound system operation and the accounts(temporarily). The elders tell me how much they appreciate the work I do, and that means a lot coming from them. Sometimes, I thought they just tolerated me because I was 'The PO's son.'hehe I've even gotten to conduct the bookstudy(it's held at our home) a couple of times, while my dad was out of town. Yep, still active too. Stop laughing at me![8>] Hoping to give my first symposium talk soon.

Nope, not at all. Jesus knows our heart condition, and will judge us accordingly.

Hey Grunt, I never really thought about sharing my thoughts all that much, because I'm pretty shy. Not a 'programming' or 'mind conrol of the Borg,' but that's just the way I am. I hate beiung the center of attention too. I didn't even want a high school graduation party!hehe I'm always worried about offending others, and I tend to err on the side of caution and keep my big mouth shut.hehe I'll try to work on it, though.
