I agree about Harry. Didn't the same actor play in some TV show a while back about alien teenagers pretending to be human? I forget the name of the show, but I remember watching it one day and my grandma walked in while one of them was using their alien powers. She started screaming: DEMONIC! DEMONIC!... Anyway, I liked the dance scene as well, but I couldn't help but notice that Toby McGuire can't be evil. The best he can do is look like a disgruntled teenager. He's been taken over by an evil, alien parasite, and suddenly he's emo. Ha! But I suppose that's part of his charm.

anyone seen the new Spider Man movie?
by veradico inthe movie is full of action, gymnastic feats of superhuman dexterity and strength, humor, interesting characters, etc.
all one could ask from a comic turned into a movie.
the ending will leave one with a bad impression.

The ending will leave one with a bad impression. It's full of sappy tears and hugs and dialog. But after you reflect on the experience overall, I think you'll agree it was a fun ride.

I think this question is interesting because it gives me an insight into my personality. I don't tend to think the End is coming, but, presuming it is, when I try to imagine whether I'd rather know or not, I conclude that I'd rather know. The danger is that the nearness or distance of the End could change how I live my life in the present. It would be silly, for example, to plan for my old age if I knew the End would come first; on the other hand, if I knew the End would come after my death, I would probably spend more time preparing for the future. However, I would hope that my overall attitude towards life would remain the same. Whether this world will end or not, I should still do what I can to appreciate it and make it a nice place for myself and others. I'd rather work on whatever mental issues I would need to resolve based on such knowledge than be ignorant.

Are JW's generally better than average people?
by JH ini for one, would blindly trust just about anyone on this forum, just the fact of knowing that you already were a jw.. does this mean that jw's in general are better people or are we a very close bunch of people?.

Oh yeah... could someone make at least the first two links clickable? You don't need to bother with the creepy Phelps' sites. I just put them down in case someone wanted to satisfy his/her morbid curiosity. :-)

I'm reminded of an article on the Phelps family. "In some ways they're a model family. All these things that you associate with the breakdown of families, like the dad's gone to the pub all the time or they just watch TV and the parents don't talk to the kids, well you can't put that on this family. They spend all their recreational time together and they all look out for each other. They don't really have friends outside the church because all their best friends are in the church. It's important to recognise the good qualities of the family as it helps explain why so many of them have stayed in it and embraced the hateful stuff."
You can watch the BBC show here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4413388146858417528&q=most+hated+family+in+america
The article I'm quoting from can be found here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/6507971.stm
If you watch the video, I'm sure you'll all see how very like the Witnesses the Phelps family is. In fact, the Phelps family is exactly the way I imagine the older generation of Witnesses, like those in Hitler's Germany. They were generally nice people whose sense of persecution was validated by the fact that their provocative message incited violence against them, forcing their community to band together and thus producing, within that community, an intimate social bond and the sort of behavior we associate with truly kind and generous people.

Allow me to introduce myself
by RollerDave ini was raised among the witnesses and left in my early 30's due to a mixture of doctrinal disputes and social isolation.
my mother and both of my sisters remain within the organization.
i also have two brothers, one df'd, one who never quite caught the watchtower bug.. my road within the organization was a rocky one that eventually lead to a place where i found myself socially isolated within the congregation as a person simply unfit for fellowship with proper, upright, theocratic people who must cut off all 'worldy' association, suffer the ensueing isolation, and eat humble pie until such a time as they determined i was 'spiritual minded' enough for them to associate with.. baptism was held up as my expected goal, but despite trying, i was never quite good enough for them.

I'm trying to understand the way abortion is being compared to the Holocaust. In particular, I wonder what definition of “human” is being used. The Holocaust was responsible for the deaths of millions of conscious human beings, creative centers of consciousness whose minds had propositional content. If there is a locus of consciousness, a sense of “self,” an awareness of one’s own being distinct from one’s environment, not to mention reasoning sophisticated enough to be identified as propositional, I could accept this as a provisional definition of what I minimally view as “human.” However much pain an animal may feel when it is killed (and I do not deny that this pain is a bad thing, generally to be avoided), it is not the same sort of bad as the loss of a rational, self-aware mind. I agree that from the time of birth and for about a month afterward an infant is characterized by the power of sensation, but, as far as I know, that’s about all. Only at around the 4 to 6 month stage is it even able to perform the sort of intentional grasping and identification of familiar faces and strangers which the average house pet can perform. And it does not respond to its name and start using spoken language until from 10 to 12 months after birth; however, I think a case could be made for consciousness as early as 8 months based on the evidence from babies who have been taught to use sign language. The lives of mothers and the lives of these fetuses (feti? nah!) or infants or whatever you want to call them are not comparable. I never cease to be surprised that choice is considered a liberal position. The definition of “conservative” should be that one is opposed to excessive governmental interference. It is interesting that the “liberals” are the ones fighting against the government taking more control over women’s lives and bodies. Abortion is a serious decision. None is more acutely aware of the value of her baby’s life than the mother involved, for she has a number of biological imperatives forcibly impressing this upon her consciousness. I’m sure there are perverse exceptions to this rule, people who use abortion as a form of birth control, but I’m relatively certain that they are just that, exceptional. I think adults should remain free to make these weighty decisions about their bodies under the guidance and care of their physicians. They do not need the government to compel them to do what they are likely inclined to do anyway, but they do need the government to get out of the way when their situation requires extraordinary measures.

Anyone find any decent pro-Witness sites?
by IsaacJS2 inas i've mentioned a few times before, i'm working on a round of articles for austin cline's site.
the final "big daddy" article is an evaluation: is the wts a controlling, harmful cult?
but i don't plan on doing an attack article.

I agree with ninja and yaddayadda about elihubooks.com (Greg Stafford's site), but he recently stated that he will not be responding to people on his chat board until the third edition of his Jehovah's Witnesses Defended comes out at the beginning of August. You can also try Jehovah's Witnesses United (http://jehovah.to/). And the following site has some valid info supporting certain readings in the NWT: http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/newworldtranslation/home.htm
Apart from these, I'm afraid it's slim pickings. -

I just thought of another conversation. This happened during the witch hunt of the ex-elder who posts on here as Onesong. The PO came up to me after the meeting and said he wanted to know where I stood. I asked him what he meant, and he said, "Well, I want to use Jehovah's word for this. Let me find the scripture." He fumbled through his Bible for a while but was unable to find the passage he wanted. "Never mind. I wanted to read you the story of Jehu, Jehonadab, and Ahab. Right before Jehu goes to kill Ahab for apostasy, he asks Jehonadab, 'Is your heart complete with me?' And that’s what I want to ask you, Is your heart complete with me?" I thought, What do mean? You want me to join you in killing [Onesong]? This was the same man who, when I once told him I try to be objective, said, "There's a thin line between objectivity and apostasy."

I have two stories involving the same elder. He started ranting about evolution and about how he say a bumper sticker of a fish AND IT HAD LEGS. He just kept repeating AND IT HAD LEGS. I could not understand what he was talking about. Later I saw the sticker. It was a parody of the Jesus fish symbol. A Jesus fish was walking out of the primordial ooze on his newly evolved legs. But that was just the beginning of the conversation. Next he started raving about the missing link. He said: "They have bones over here ((gestured to his left)) and bones over hear ((gestured to his right)) BUT NOTHING IN THE MIDDLE." I said something like: "Yeah. They don't have a leg to stand on," and struggled to keep a straight face.
On another occasion, during the bookstudy, I recognized a quote in the Daniel book. The Daniel book itself just says something like "a certain Oxford scholar states..." but I recognized the quote from C. S. Lewis's book on miracles. So then I proceeded to give a more extended description of the passage the Daniel book was quoting from. After I finished, the brother said: "A man like that certainly does not have Jehovah's favor. Horrible higher criticism!" It made absolutely no sense at all. Lewis's point was in complete harmony with the Society's position, and the Society was quoting his point with approval.
