some of us may wish to write to lyn cockburn about the society's conduct and policies regarding molestation, as recently documented on dateline.
it would seem very timely given her statements in the following column.. http://www.canoe.ca/columnists/cockburn.html.
june 5, 2002. no second chances for pedophiles.

my mother felt the need to discuss the dateline episode.
the elder said he had not seen it but heard about it.
he said, "of course, sexual abuse is a crime.
Dateline could not have been easy for you to watch. I hope you are okay with it all.

monique was nine years old when he started abusing her.
he began by spying on her as she undressed; then he started visiting her room at night and touching her private parts.
when she resisted him, he was furious.
I noticed that too, that over and over the Watchtower's focus is on regaining their brother, correcting the erring one, or maintaining the cleanliness of teh congregation.
Where is the support and help for the survivors? Where is it written? Where is the outreach for survivors, like the one we maintain here on the JW.COM M.A.S.H. Unit (incoming wounded, 50 a day sometimes.)

i recall reading a couple years back, some court documents posted on an ex-jw site that stated that charles taze russell was accused by his wife (at their divorce hearing) of sexually abusing a girl that they had taken in to their home.
does anyone have any information on this?
or know where i can find this again?
This man's been dead for how long? Dear God PLEASE give me a life sometime soon...
Anyway, those links say that Rose came to live with them in 1889. Maria testified in court to events that occurred, regarding Rose, in 1893. That would make Rose give or take, 18 years old.
The inappropriateness of this behavior I think was multitudinous:
What was the legal age for women back then, was it 21?
Was this appropriate behavior, for Russell, toward a young woman to whom he was committed to care and be responsible for (if he was)
And what stood out fo rme, if you carefully read teh transcript, that there may have been far more to testify to than what she did, but she was only allowed to go back as far as 1893 and also only what she personally saw and heard. Such is the way with some legal proceedings, the good stuff gets left out.
And finally, although Maria didn't produce Rose Ball to authenticate her statements, neither did Russell deny them and/or produce Rose Ball to deny them. I personally get the feeling that if Russell had tried to deny the allegations, Rose Ball would have been there in two shakes of a lamb's tail.
I have trouble tremembering what I have to do when I get up in the morning, and this jellyfish story is almost ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD.
Ho Hum, just another day in cucltdom....

this is a little long, but i think you will find it interesting!!!.
the book "organized to accomplish our ministry" (1989) written by the watchtower society has this to say about matthew 18:15-17 starting on page 142:.
"when giving counsel, jesus outlined some specific procedures for resolving problems of serious wrongdoing, such as fraud or slander, that may arise between fellow christians......... .
from pages 144 to 145 of the OM book:
NOT OVERLOOKING SERIOUS WRONGS
"...then do as Jesus said and take one or two others along and speak with him again....Preferably they should be witnesses of the alleged wrongdoing, but if there are no eyewitnesses, you may choose to take along responsible brothers who become witnesses to teh evidence presented in the discussion.
But if you are convinced that your brother has sinned against you and it has not been resolved...and if a serious sin is involved so that it would be wrong just to let it pass, then you should report the matter to the overseers of the congregation. Having done this, you have taken it as far as you can. Leave the problem in the hands of the responsible members of the congregation and trust in Jehovah that it will be resolved.
HANDLING OTHER JUDICIAL MATTERS
...If it is established that there is substance to the report and evidence is produced showing that a serious sin may have been committed, the congregation's body of elders will assign a judicial committee of at least three brothers to handle the matter.

He explains:
"Now in addition to seeing to it that the victim is protected, the elders will meet with the accused and find out what he or she has to say about the situation. In those cases, they also contact our headquarters to receive any recommendations or advice that we may have. Where even one allegation is made of child molestation, steps are taken to see to it that the authorities are also involved."
He says that perhaps our accusation comes from what they do interally or judicially.
<"If an allegation is raised against a certain individual, elders will meet with that individual to see if he wishes to confess or see if he wishes to seek the help of the elders in any way. If two separate witnesses raise an accusation against an individual, and if it is found that the practice is going on and he is unrepentant, then the individual is dismissed, or disfellowshipped,
excommunicated, from the congregation.">
MY GOD HOW CAN YOU NOT SEE THE HOLES IN THIS STATEMENT....
<and if it is found that the practice is going on and he is unrepentant,>
What did you see in that video?
"Is there anything to this?"
"No"
"Okay then...sorry we bothered you."
The practice is not going on.
HOW ABOUT HIS:
"17 people have accused you of molesting them. Is there anything to this?"
"Yes, but I am sorry and not doing it anymore."
"Okay then, ...sorry we bothered you."

i am currently doing some research on the early days and struck a few obstacles for which i need some help from anybody.. 1)russell predicted several times the "rapture of the saints".
this meant a visible return of those saints and that russell & co would rise to heaven.
when they failed to return visibly it was concluded that it did happen but invisible.
check out 'quotes' at the bottom of the page.
Here's some more hilarious quotes:
From 'Defending an dLagally Establishing the Good News'(1950):
If your training as a minister is attacked by a question on cross-examination show that you were trained in the most eficient ministry schools in the world, the Society's ministry schools. Show that the school is conducted in a manner similar to the tutorial and discussion groups used in the most modern universities. Explain that there are regular courses in Bible study, comparative theology, public speaking, Bible history, etc. with set courses and portions for home study, in addition to the regular discussion groups.
And another gem:
You may be asked whether you are carrying on a "campaign of hate" or attacking other people becasue of their religion. Your answer should be "No". Jehovah's Witnesses love all people regardless of their religious affiliation.

Well, RR will argue with you vehemently about it, but it's my personal belief that if you go back and examine Russell's whole life style, you will find that he FITS the profile of a child molester in too many ways.
Anyway, go to www.freeminds.org. The book is called "Visions of Glory" by Barbara Grizutti Harrison, and the whole Charles and Maria Russell story is gone into great detail there. The whole text is available there with the kindest permission of the author who has since passed away.
Barabara, may you have peace and joy and be remembered forever.
Also, RR says anaother author went into great detail about Russell's personal life, I don't know who that was but would love to know wmyself.
