  i remember studying this book years ago and how it impacted my belief system.

  i no longer believe the bible is god's word.

  however i do have a couple of lingering questions on this subject.

  Tenacious the observable universe is a very violent and disordelly place. Just because there is some sembalence of order we observe in our neck of the woods does not indicate inteligent design. Would an inteligent designer create an ebola virus or engineer the spanish influenza outbreak of 1919? Why design the earth's orbit with a slight wobble(precession) that causes ice ages? Why design a meteor impact that wiped out the dinasours?

  Not everyones kidneys or brain function works properly for example.

  How come some people die so young others seem to go on and on. The list just goes on and on.

  How do you feel about religion as a whole?

  it just seems to me religion in general primarily makes truly bad people worse, not genuinly good people better; and in many cases has even made good people do bad things in the name of their religion.

  just curious, a personal poll if you will.

  what are you guys' current views on religion as a whole?

  How do I feel about religion? I think it served some purpose in our evolutionary history. I have spent a lot of time recently with the Inuit in Canada's far North. The Inuit are a very superstitious and religious people. For the Inuit being superstitious and religious is a matter of survival. It's crazy some of the things they believe!

  The craziest thing would have to be their discouragement of higher education of their children. I think this will be their ultimate downfall it will just take a while. Sigh! and so many are going to suffer.

  i have a 12 inch diameter telescope.

  i would go outside and listen to the psalms that praised to my god.

  I see beauty in all things, from the sub atomic world of virtual particles to the beauty of colliding universes. It's all just a matter of perspective. Love of Jehovah or faith in him does not need to be part it. Don't look for purpose in all that you see and discover just discover it!

  I'll give an example, for years doctors treated stomach ulcers with tranquilizers and other things thinking it was a nervous condition. It turns out that many of them are caused by a bacteria called helicobacter pylori discovered in deep sea volcanic vents. What kind of god would create such a bacteria? I am sure many people that get treatment today for ulcers are appreciative of that discovery by a few biochemists and biologists.

  recent events and book reads (one suggested by cofty i believe- thank you) have lead me to the only logical and acceptable conclusion:.

  there is no god.. simple logical reasoning: matter can neither me created or destroyed.

  so the amount of mass in the universe is constant.

  I remain an agnostic although I tend towards atheism. I keep an open and logical mind, something all scientists should do.

  Has This Site Ever Hurt You In Your Journey Out Of The JW Religion?

  this site has gone through many metamorphosis over the years.

  i believe it is a kinder, less edgy place tan it was a few years ago.

  i wonder how many people were helped versus turned off by this place.

  OK Simon after 30 years being watchtower free, I am going back and beg the elders to reinstate me. I would love to see the Watchtower buy this site. I guess it wouldn't be long before they restricted my posting ability.

  is it just me or does anyone else see more newbies joining this site this past year and especially in the last few months .. we would love to welcome you with genuine friendship ,support ,encouragement ,a place to vent ,and not judge you.. you have the freedom to express whatever view you like and you won`t be kicked off the board.. and to learn more about the "truth" about the truth , you will not hear at a kingdom hall .. smiddy.

  I was a born in and I exited before the internet was even around. I have found the content on this site to be very informative. I didn't know for example, about the overlapping generations thing. Any thinking newbie who is just lurking here will find this site very informative to. I tend to lurk here more than post just to see whats going on. I don't think you can read anything in to how many newbies are posting here.

  What's with the hijab?

  the hijab is one of a few headdresses worn by muslim women.

  from what i can tell, it is supposed to hide the femininity of the woman.

  because i'm sure as a muslim, it's going to all be the woman's fault if a man acts improperly due to attraction.. i don't agree with it, but hey, it's their religion and it doesn't hurt others, so have at it if you want to wear it.. let's face it.

  These women "choose" to wear the burka in the same way that JW children "choose" to die rather than accept blood. When you limit people's access to knowledge you can make all sorts of things feel like a free choice.

  A lot will question but find it too hard to give up their little bubble, others realise there's a big world out here that isn't as bad as they've been told and burst through.

  That's what happened to me and at a young age. My grandparents, parents, cousins, brothers and sister couldn't give up the bubble. Most young kids in my day were hiding magazines of Playboy and Penthouse I was hiding Scientific American mags from my parents.

  I have had a great life but I do miss my family
