Transparency in Field Service Hours
by Earnest ini notice that in the recent instructions for new regular pioneers (2020-08-s-236-e) it lists a number of assignments for which a pioneer can be credited (up to 75) hours in a month.. these include:construction oversight, assembly hall oversight, assembly oversight, and convention oversight, as well as serving as temporary volunteers at bethel, commuter bethelites, remote volunteers, bethel consultants, hospital liaison committee members, patient visitation group members, disaster relief committee members, local design/construction department field representatives and maintenance trainers, and so forth.

Neanderthals - Meet Your Ancestors
by Earnest intonight (sunday, 13th may) at 20:00 on bbc 2 ... for neanderthal believers, agnostics and deniers.. this first programme in a two-part series investigates what neanderthals looked like and and how they lived in their ice age world.
it turns out that almost everything we thought we knew about them is wrong.
they weren't hunched, grunting, knuckle-dragging ape-men at all.

Earliest Latin Commentary on the Gospels
by Earnest inthe earliest latin commentary on the gospels, lost for over 1500 years, has been rediscovered and made available in english for the first time.
the work, which was written by a bishop in north italy, fortunatianus of aquileia, dates back to the middle of the fourth century.
despite references to it in other ancient works, no copy was known to survive until a researcher from the university of salzburg identified the commentary in an anonymous manuscript copied around the year 800 and held in cologne cathedral library.. it is reported on here and an english translation and information about the commentary and the bishop can be accessed here.. this commentary tended to allegorise scripture in order to explain it.

Attack near St Catherine's Monastery
by Earnest infollowing on from the bombings of coptic churches in egypt, there was an attack earlier this month on a checkpoint near st catherine's monastery.
this monastery dates back to the time of justinian and has a number of early bible mss including part of codex sinaiticus of the fourth century.. i am surprised this hasn't happened before because isis is active in northern sinai and it would be a major event were they to gain access and wreak havoc at st catherine's monastery.
although the isolation of the monastery has contributed to its survival over 1400 years, it is in the forefront of digitising its manuscript collection.

Guessing and uncertainty in the eukaryotic fossil world
by Earnest inthe journal nature, dated 14 march 2017, has an article entitled fossil algae hold clues to origin of modern photosynthesis reporting on a newly discovered set of 'eukaryotic' specimens which may help to identify the origin of photosynthesis in eukaryotes.
however, there is some uncertainty in this.. it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly where ancient fossils lie on the tree of life because, billions of years ago, many organisms were superficially similar.
“that’s the problem with this field,” says [nicholas butterfield, a palaeobiologist at the university of cambridge, uk].
