Another Watchtower Deception
by bajarama ini imagine most on this board have already read about this issue.
below is a excerpt from the 95' awake.
what i gather from it is the watchtower makes it sound like they foretold the return of the united nations in 1942, three years before it took place in 1945.

Interesting quote from Osarsif's link:
The "scarlet colored beast" (Rev. 17:3) was explained to be "The Hague International Peace Conference," formed in 1899. 14 This organization "functioned until the World War. It then went into the abyss and ceased to function. After the World War it came out of the abyss or pit and began to function again in the form of the League of Nations." 15 This understanding was prevalent until 1942 (see for instance the book Enemies 1937, pp. 283ff.), when it dawned upon the Watch Tower leaders that World War II would not develop into Armageddon either.
No wonder "some" thought WWII would lead into Armageddon.

A congregation in NW Indiana is attending the meeting at the Silverdome near Detroit. Chicago would be much closer if there was such a meeting being held there. FWIW

Witnesses instructed not to harbor private ideas
by cyberguy intoday's watchtower lesson instructs witnesses not to think for themselves when it comes to bible understanding:.

First, since "oneness" is to be observed, a mature Christian must be in unity and full harmony with fellow believers as far as faith and knowledge are concerned. He does not advocate or insist on personal opinions or harbor private ideas when it comes to Bible understanding.
How can this be harmonized with Romans 14? Why didn't Paul counsel these early Christians to not harbor private ideas, to be in full harmony in faith and knowledge? In regard to eating he said, "Who are you to judge the house servant of another? To his own master he stands or falls." In regard to observing days he said, "Let each [man] be fully convinced in his own mind."

"Special" meeting in October?
by Esmeralda inquestion.
my mother told my husband that there is to be a 'special meeting' in october at the local sports arena (same place as dc's are held here) and that "only publishers are allowed to attend" that they will get "special cards" for admission from their local congregation and have to hand them in to get into the building.
i have no idea if this has anything to do with the "annual meeting" they always have (isn't that generally in october?

Interesting that the WT July 1, 2001 announcing the Annual Meeting says:
"No arrangements will be made for tying in the annual meeting by telephone lines to other auditoriums."
Wonder why they changed their minds?MrMoe: Where held? One place is the Silverdome in Pontiac, MI

Question for you JW's or non JW's about 1935?
by Brutus inhow do you prove from the bible that 1935 was the year that the selection to heaven stopped due to being filled?

The May 1, 2001, page 14 has an article entitled 'Behold! The Great Crowd!'
It gives some history of the development of the Great Crowd doctrine. The "Millions Now Living Will Never Die" gave hope of living through Armageddon everlastingly on earth. WT of 1923 identified the sheep of "the sheep and the goats" (Ma. 25.31-46) as not spirit-begotten. In 1931 "Vindication" book said Jehonadab (2Kings 10:15-28) represented "the ones whom the Lord will preserve during the time of Armageddon, take them through that trouble, and give them everlasting life on the earth. These constitute the 'sheep' class."With this background of the ever nearness of Armageddon and the possibility of living forever on earth --"The Watchtower had expressed the hope that a convention scheduled for May 30 to June 3, 1935 , in Washington, D.C., U.S.A., would be 'a real comfort and benefit' to those pictured by Jehonadab. And that it proved to be!"
Page 15, Wt. May 15, 2001:
"In a stirring talk on 'The Great Multitude,' delivered to about 20,000 conventioners, J. F. Rutherford presented Scriptural proof that the modern-day 'Other sheep' are identical with that 'great crowd' of Revelation 7:9. (John 10:16) At the climax of this talk, the speaker asked: 'Will all those who have the hope of living forever on the earth please stand?' As a large part of the audience stood up, Rutherford declared: 'Behold! The great multitude!' There was a hush, followed by loud cheering. On the following day, 840 new Witnesses of Jehovah were baptized, most of these professing to be of the great crowd.A Remarkable Presence
Prior to 1935, an increasing number of those who responded to the Bible's message and showed zeal in preaching the good news manifested an interest in living forever on the Paradise earth. They had no desire to go to heaven for God had not given them the hope of heavenly life. Their identifying themselves with the great crowd of other sheep indicated that by 1935 the calling of the 144,000 anointed Christians was virtually complete.--Revelation 7:4."The above seems to be an attempt to explain how they came up with the 1935 date.

Next he uses a dark implication about the amount of time Watters spent in Bethel and as a JW -- as if "barely 8 years of active participation" is not enough to make a sound judgement about the validity of "his new faith". The idea seems to be that one needs decades of experience to make a proper judgment.
Come to think of it, JF Rutherford was rather a novice when he became president. From baptism to presidency in about 11 years.
*** jv 67 6 A Time of Testing (1914-1918) *** In 1906, Joseph F. Rutherford was baptized, and a year later he became the Watch Tower Society’s legal counsel.
*** w60 10/1 604 Pursuing My Purpose in Life ***At the business meeting in January, 1917, Brother Joseph Rutherford was elected president of the Society.
