i have a question.. i know that russell's hallmark was "putting the hose on hell", so i'm assuming that the belief that humans do not have an immortal soul was also one of his early teachings.. however, i know that russell used the symbol of the cross, celebrated christmas, and that the early bible students also fellowshipped with other christians.
my grandmother, for example, attended a baptist church on sundays but went to bible student group studies with her father through the week.. so i am wondering about the witnesses rejection of the trinity doctrine.
did russell outspokenly reject the trinity doctrine?

jesus the archangel michael?
1 thess 4:16 (daniel 10:13).
the watchtower teaches that michael is the only archangel (aid to bible understanding).
Hi all. I have a question related to the teaching of the Witnesses that Jesus is the Archangel Michael. Does anyone know when this began to be taught by them?
I have checked the Watchtower CD, and found a specific dogmatic reference from 1954 there.
Did this teaching originate at the same time that the Witnesses started talking about worship of Jesus being "relative"?
Thanks!

You guys are great!!!
Someone on another board has asked me where the JWs came up with the idea that Jesus was Michael the Archangel. I am not sure when they first started teaching that, but I surmised that it had to be after they discarded the Diety of Christ as a concept.
Atlantis, I'll be watching for that scan ;-)
Thanks so much!

I have a question.

However, I know that Russell used the symbol of the Cross, celebrated Christmas, and that the early Bible students also fellowshipped with other Christians. My grandmother, for example, attended a Baptist Church on Sundays but went to Bible Student group studies with her father through the week.
So I am wondering about the Witnesses rejection of the Trinity doctrine. Did Russell outspokenly reject the Trinity doctrine? Did he accept the Diety of Christ but not the Trinity, or accept or reject both?
I'm trying to figure out if rejection of the Trinity was a Russell teaching from the beginning, or if Rutherford rejected the Trinity and/or Diety of Christ at the same time that he insisted that the Bible Students be called Jehovah's Witnesses.
Can one of you good researchers point me in the direction of an answer to this question?
If I still had my parents library, I could look for myself. But its 400 miles away at my JW sister's house.
Thanks!

i think most jw's expect that your world will fall apart once you leave the org.
you will start using drugs, sleeping around, tea party with demons, you know all of the typical bullshit horror stories like oh did you hear that (insert name here) left the truf, and now his wife left him, he lost his job, he is homeless and being ass raped by demons!
oh no thank jehovah we are all still in.
Great thread, Andre ;-)
I think the best Anti-witness is just enjoying life, love, make a ton of new friends, be happy, find new interests, and improve yourself.
Amen to this!! I would also add that, if allowed, we should continue to show our JW friends and relatives the kind of unconditional love that they will never get from the Borg. We can be the best possible examples of what serving God is really all about.
If they won't let us show them how much we care about them, we can still pray for them. They can't stop us from doing that. And keeping them in our prayers helps us by keeping our bitterness and resentment in check.
Pax,
Ruth
i don't feel comfortable living as an atheist.
i believe the world is far to complex and humans are too incredible to have just occurred.
therefore, if i was to attend a church, which one should i consider?
Faundy:
I found that kind of experience in the Roman Catholic Church. I am more "me" than I have ever been, but I am closer to Jesus at the same time. My family (who do not necessarily agree with my decision) say I am calmer and more centered, as well as happier.
Most Catholic Churches are open during the day. You can just walk in and pray.
Because you asked,
Ruth
if so hello!
and how many of you are doing the christmas novena?
wife and i started ours on dec 16th.
Andre:
I don't know how I missed this thread -- sorry!!
As you know, I am currently in RCIA and will be baptized Roman Catholic on March 22, 2008.
Through the wonder of the Church, the Lord is healing me from all the bumps and bruises of my 5th generation JW life.
I have never been happier, and I dearly wish such joy and peace on others.
I didn't get to do the Christmas Novena this year. If you read at the catholicxjw group, you know that I have had some difficulties lately. But God is good, and the Vigil Mass last night with all the children of the parish was wonderful.
I went through a period of "ethical agnosticism", so I do understand the misgivings of some of our friends here. Tom Cabeen, Jim Whitney, Jeff Schwehm, and James Caputo have been of great help to me in my journey home to the Church. I keep up a regular correspondence with them, and hope to meet them this summer.
Merry first day of Christmas to you, my brother!
Ruth
it's after midnight here in california - so i'll say merry christmas to all of you - best wishes for the new year.
and now, to bed.
Merry Christmas to you, Hortensia!!
And a Happy New Year ;-)
Ruth
i'd like you all to tell me 2 or 3 things:.
1- were you raised a witness or not?.
2-if you were, was your family very "theocratic" or not so much?.
1. Yes
2. Ultra-Theocratic
3. Christian (soon to be Roman Catholic)
