  i received an email from my sister in law.

  she was relating an experience given in a talk at an assembly.

  a young couple wanted to have children, but they couldn't conceive, so they decided to adopt a child.

  I received an email from my sister in law. She was relating an experience given in a talk at an assembly. It goes like this:

  A young couple wanted to have children, but they couldn't conceive, so they decided to adopt a child. They went to different adoption agencies but they were told it might take years before they could give them a baby. They were told to try to adopt a baby from another country like Korea or Vietnam, that they might be able to adopt one sooner.

  If they were to consider an older child, maybe 7 or 8 years old, they could have one almost immediately. So, they submited the application. While all this was happening, JW's knocked on their door. They started a Bible study, quickly progressed and soon both got baptized, were very active and started pioneering. Because of this, they decided to wait until the "new system to have kids. They went to the adoption agency to explain their circumstances and to stop the adoption process. But they told them that there was a vietnamese child already on his way for them. The agency begged them to not cancel the process.

  Confused, they went home to meditate and pray over the situation and decided to proceed with the adoption. They thought that because he was older, he would be in school most of the day and they could go on with their pioneer service and see how things will work out.

  They got the house ready for the new arrival. They fix the childs room, bought a lot of toys and placed a copy of "My Book of Bible Stories" in his bookcase. Finally, the day arrived to bring the boy home. They showed him the kitchen, living room, but the little boy seemed to be very sad. They showed him his room, and soon, after looking around saw the book. Immediately he ran and grabbed the book, put it against his chest and started crying.

  When they finally got him calmed enough to talk, he explained that both his parents were Witnesses and when they died he prayed to Jehovah that if someone was to adopt him to please be Witnesses.

  (This experience was given in a Circuit Assembly in California. The District Overseer finished the talk saying, "Never think that Jehovah does not answer prayers, even those of little children." So when was the last time you put your heart into your prayers.)

  Do you still pray?

  i was wondering about this the other day before i went to sleep, out of habit and my spiritual beliefs now, i spoke to the spiritual realm above and asked for guidance and protection.. i remember my journey of leaving the jw "borg" (a new term i have picked up here - i like it!

  ) and at first i refused to pray at all, and then i wasn't sure i wanted to or not, and then i developed my own sense of the higher power above and spirituality and every night before i sleep, i feel blessed to have another day of life, to do it all again.

  even on days when i am not having such a good day, i take time to ask the higher realm for strength and direction.

  As far as "formal" praying is concerned, only occasionally. But, as far as thinking of him, still being amazed daily at the complexity of creation, and wondering

  where I fit in and where it is all going?......Yes, daily.

  Just like Bourne, occasionally. Nature, the stars and a good time, make me want to give thanks to the power above who actually attracts me, that being that cares about us and wants the best for us. Not the one that, no matter what you do, still tells you that is not enough, and that every day you have to strive for giving more and more. I feel I need that spiritual connection with a Higher Power, with God, Jehovah, however you want to call it, so in my transition from the Org., to the outside world I am still somewhat lost. Of course, JW's will say: "that is because you are not part of us anymore and you will always be lost". But I don't believe so, I am lost because I never felt that strong connection with God in the first place. Even when I was a Witness, I didn't pray every day. But I feel better now than I ever felt when I was a Witness. It scares me sometimes, because even though I don't agree with many things taught, I sometimes feel that I am doing the wrong thing by not attending, somehow I still think they are the religion chose by God. Don't chew me for that please, it's just how I feel.

  a lot of them i've found over the internet.

  after reading their profiles and talking to them, to my surprise, a lot of them are professionals with degrees like doctors, engineers, business, etc.

  "talking" to all of you has made me feel a lot better. In fact, the other day I spoke with my best friend who's also an inactive witness and she told me she is going back to school to become a nurse, and that did it for me. I will first see how I can get some financial help, who knows maybe I am eligible for a scholarship. I will also study something related to the medical field, don't know about becoming a nurse, but I want to try for anything that will get me in close to the action of helping other people.

  Thanks to all of you who have encouraged me, you've been great. Good luck to all of you who are still thinking about it, we are young and we can do it.

  Cindi thank you for starting this thread ! This topic is always on my mind too .

  I grew up a Jw with all the same influences everyone else spoke about. I am now 46 and out of the religion , BUT I still don't know what I want to be when I grow Up !

  I was a staight A student in High School and teachers all encouraged me to go to college .But I was told the end is so close it would be a waste. This history of never wanting more or something better has caused me to be unable to really know What I would go back to school for now .

  I never had dreams to be anything other than a mom and I did get to have that fulfilled . However now the kids are grown .....

  I really don't know where to start now......any suggestions ????

  Is there anything that you really enjoy doing or reading about? I like watching and reading about health and medicine. All these tv programs, like ER, Grey's Anatomy or the Discovery Health Channel. So somehow I have developed a liking for the medicine field, whatever it is. I love travel and love the beauty industry too. You might discover your vocation or your career talents by analyzing what you always go for. Now that your kids are all grown up, if your finances permit, would you go back to school and at least get a 2 year course on whatever it is you feel you'll be good at? It doesn't have to be a long term career, but something you will enjoy and will make you financially stable.

  In my case I have an 18 year old that will soon leave the crate, but still have 2 little ones that need me at home at night, and a big one that cannot stand being away from me when I come home from work. (HUSBAND) I feel it will be too stressful for me to do both, go to work full time and go to school at night, and stress is something I don't need now.

  But think about it and come back and tell us what you like.

  Good for you. I too have become, somehow, very interested in the medical field. I am not interested in becoming a professional like a lawyer, doctor, etc., but I would like to be study something that I would really enjoy and that will give me the financial stability we want. I admire those that after so many years go back to school and finish and really enjoy what they do.

  I am happy for all of you who have done it. KUDOS to you.

  First-welcome to the forum raindog.

  Cindy-welcome ! I don't know your age, but as long as you are not yet a senior, I can suggest there is time to get the education you want and need. Even if formal education is out of the question, libraries, and the 'net are excellent resources to find what you need.

  You cannot accomplish what you want as long as you continue to dwell on your past. I had to let go of all the juvenile stuff from decades ago, and get the diploma I so needed to survive.

  You can too!

  Thank you all for your words. I'll try not to dwell on those things too much. Negative thoughts attract negative things. And, with all due respect to the seniors in this board, thankfully I am not there yet. I am only 40 years old, but want to be able to reach my senior years accomplished and feeling fulfilled.

After reading their profiles and talking to them, to my surprise, a lot of them are professionals with degrees like doctors, engineers, business, etc. and some like me were and still are JW's. Way back when I was in High School, and this is old news, there was the issue with going to college and now I beat my a@# because I chose to pay attention to that "wonderful counsel" and decided to go for a stupid technical college to study for just a year, because I couldn't choose anything better to do with my life because of how "unchristian" was to go to college. I only blame myself for not being my own person and having my head up in the clouds, wanting to be "good" and "obey" the Society's suggestions about College. Now, what have I done with my life? I kept struggling to be "in" but I'm out and didn't become as accomplished as I would have want to be either. Not that I have a bad life, I have a wonderful husband and kids, but I wish I would've become something more than what I am now. I hate the fact that back then, I wasn't really sure of what I wanted, and what I did want, I always looked up to somebody else's opinion on the matter, and of course, there was always something negative about my choices.

  Sorry, but I needed to vent.

  i was watching the youtube video on the nbc piece about pedophiles and saw a comment about a new oral sex study article that was supposedly quite graphic.

  i was curious if anyone had this?!

  or knew what date it was...i might be able to sneak a peek the next time i visit my mother.

  I've heard a lot about that article and to tell you the truth, I don't want to even read it. Those are the things that got me all depressed when I was attending. All the little details about ones personal life that they discuss that make you feel that nothing you do is good enough. Why deviate from what's really important and talk about things that only should be a matter of personal choice?

  A lot of marriages have been in jeopardy because women will go for just about anything to the elders or will ask the Society if such and such thing is appropriate. What's that all about? Give me a break.
