Another Elder Suicide?

well it looks like a southern ontario elder just took his own life.

i cant go into details as we live in a very small world in "the truth" and even the smallest amount of detail on this one could quickly connect this to me, so for now its on the d-low.. it is a relative of a very close friend and he is godsmacked by it.

he said to me, " we sure seem to be seeing more of this lately arent we?

did you ever notice that anytime a JW commits suicide they are ALWAYS labeled as having a "mental illness"?

You quoted from my comment. But this brother that I talked about was schizophrenic, he indeed had a mental illness. The second one, did not. I don't know if you took ofense on my comment of this brother as having a mental illness but I knew him and believe me he was sick for real. But the elder I knew that had lost his wife did not. His suicide was because of the sadness of trying to deal with the death of his wife and whatever else came with that that I don't know. Remember that the Society has acknowledged that among them are people with real mental problems, have studied the Bible having those problems and have not being diagnosed after becoming witnesses. So of course, not everybody that have taken their own lives are mentally ill, but there are some that do.

So sad... I can't imagine the dark cloud individuals like this must live in to get to the point of taking their own life... especially among "God's Happy People".
12-15 years ago, I would have never imagined suicides within the Organization... now... it's almost common.

I was born & raised in the "truth". I am 40 years old and have only heard of one intent to commit suicide and one actual suicide. The first one was a "brother" with mental illness. About 20 years ago he tried several times to commit suicide and was disfellowshiped because of it. IMAGINE THAT! That in itself would want to make a sick person commit suicide, I think. After "the light got brighter" the Society acknowledged that there were mental illnesses that would prompt one to do that. I guess after that they are more careful as to who might be sick and what to do about it.

The second one was an elder I knew from my childhood. His wife died of cancer many years ago, got remarried to someone his wife said would be a good candidate for him if she was to pass away. However he never got over the pain of loosing her. I think he was on antidepressants and took more than prescribed, got in the car's back, closed the hood, fell asleep and never woke up. The police found the car and him dead. He had told his current wife that he was going to the doctor's to have his medication refilled and that's the last time she saw him. Sad isn't it.

Even with the hope of resurrection and paradise, some are still very depressed and agreeing with one of the members here, what we do seems to never be enough. You are sick but have to manage to be at the meetings and field service. Afraid to miss a meeting because others will see it as being weak. No education has meant for many work jobs that nobody wants and all to attend all five meetings and field service, and don't you dare find one that will put you to work on meeting days. All that and more makes one feel like wanting to run away and never come back.

VERY SAD INDEED.

Did I miss something? Where did these rumors started? Can anybody tell me? I guess my birthday has a dark tone to it. No wonder I behave the way I do. Where did you all hear that yesterday was suppose to be "the End"?

Is this the actual change you are asking about or it's just an example of you think might be one of the changes? Could you be more specific about the rumors?

Quantum Universe

an acquaintance was telling me about how there have been some new discoveries in quantum mechanics and that "everything we know is going to change", his words.

he said that these top scientists and physicists have already met with the world's top religious leaders and explained to them what they have discovered and how it will change everyone's perception about reality.. i'm not all that informed on quantum mechanics and all that scientific mumbo-jumbo other than to know that some people believe that there are parallel universes and that it might be possible(?

) that we exist in different universes at the same time.. from what this guy was telling me, i gathered (i think) that reality and our perception of reality is based on nothing tangible except information.

To me is a very interesting subject although I do not have the brains to understand it all. I started reading a few books under that subject and seems very complicated. However it made me think, we have been created at God's image. He gave us the brains and the intelligence. If human beings are capable to deal with such profounds subjects, then there must be something real about it. We will never be able to understand the misteries and secrets of the Universe, so what if some of those theories are true? God himself is a mystey and to our eyes it's almost impossible to believe that there is a being countless of times more powerful than we are, incapable of dying. He defies all physics, or at least what we think are the rules of physics. So, what these scientists are trying to discover might as well be God's realm.

Many years ago it was impossible to believe that the Universe held Black Holes, that those things couldn't exist. But they do. And men have been able to discover them and explain them. That we don't understand the physics of it, does not make it unreal.

But if there is somebody out there that is into these things and can explain like we are 5 years old, please do so.

i was just thinking about a co's closing remarks one sunday after the watchtower study.

He stated that he had heard that Ray Franz was dead. He didn't call him by name, of course. But he stated that a former GB member who turned apostate had recently become very ill. His word were, "I imagine by now he's dead."
Far be it from me to defend a WTS representative, but what was so terrible about this? That he called him an "apostate"? That he was wrong about his being dead?

First of all, what's the need of him mentioning Ray Franz at all? Why does he care whether or not he is still alive? I thought, because he turned "apostate" he shouldn't even be mentioning him. What was the point? I think that is why his remark was so cold, its because there is no need to mention Mr. Franz, if it wasn't even relevant to his talk. The fact that he mentioned him just to say he was probably dead, makes it callous. As if he was happy about it.

Wow, a pioneer and an elder. What happened? What's gotten you so mad? I understand you

when you talk about education because I myself took a quick course, because back in the 80's

it was practically a sin to go to College. They will say it was a matter of personal decision but at

the same time will give talks saying how bad it was for a Christian to attend College. Now both

my husband and I are struggling with him at a night time job not paying too bad, but not as good

as it should at this time of our lives, and me at an office. I can't say it's all bad, but I guess it

could've been better, considering that if we had taken a 4 year course in College we would

have been out by 1990; 17 years ago. He would have been more prepared and maybe I

would either be a stay home mom or at least would have a part time to cover my knick-knacs.

With a 9-5 M-F job we might have even be attending all meetings and doing everything else

without regrets. Or maybe not. The point is that I agree with you and understand your

frustration and the need of having to vent them all out, because every now and then and sit

down to think and get very angry at the fact that I didn't study and chose a good career for me

as I was not after a rewarding life or on becoming rich, but just to be able to live comfortable.

Anybody attended the Memorial last night? What was your experience?

the memorial to me is still somewhat sacred so i decided to attend.

i thought i would feel different, in the sense that maybe i would miss meetings, but i was wrong.

This year it was apparently an entirely new outline. I had never heard this Memorial discourse before.
The talk was slanted heavily toward JW's themselves. IOW Preaching to the choir. An interested person off the street would not have been able to follow the leaps in reasoning as the speaker jumped from the "Little Flock" of the Lucan account to the "144,000" of Revelation and from the "Great Multitude" of Revelation back to the "Other Sheep" of the Johannine gospel with no explanation whatsoever.

Then it must be a new outline, because that is what I noticed in the talk given at the Memorial I attended. For the new ones there it must have been a very confusing talk. It was clearly said that only 144,000 partake from the emblems, and, we as part of the "other sheep" are only observers, both with the promise of everlasting life either in heaven or on earth.

Yes I remember when they used to describe how they were able to get unfermented bread and the wine and such, But I didn't hear that either on yesterday's talk. I don't know something about it didn't add up.
