The book of Revelation, the word of God, or one hell of a drug trip?
by free2beme inwhat more confusing and off the wall book in the bible, can there be, then the book of revelation.
it has all sort of odd things being talked about, all sorts of weird events that seem to only be connected when you twist the mind to the maximum of your imagination.
so many people, in religions, have tried to explain this off the wall book and yet refuse to face the fact that it might just be complete imagination of nonsense.

I just watched a program on this and they suggest that John was writing in code to the Christians. Since it was illegal to write anything bad about the Roman goverment at the time.
For example: When he talked about 666 he was probably talking about emperor NERO. Since every Hebrew letter has a numeric counterpart and when you match 666 with Hebrew letter it spells out NERO. Also the beast with 7 head could refer to Rome since it sat on 7 hills.

I'm sure that Revelation was specifically written as a political slam against Rome, who at the time was ruler over the lands formerly belonging to Israel. The former nation of Israel was not at all happy about this, and longed for a time when Rome would fall, kind of like some people in the Southern U.S. still resent having lost their attempted secession from the Union, and would like to see the North fall. At the time John wrote Revelation, there had already been one failed attempt by Jews to revolt against the Empire. John was writing to disgruntled Jews who longed for deliverance from Roman rule, and that is the entire meaning of Revelation, no secrets for the modern day. Christians living during and after the rule of Constantine considered Revelation to have been fulfilled when the Roman Empire adopted Christianity as the state religion.
I tend to agree with these explanations. I watched a similar program to the one Hecklerboy watched and it really made a lot of sense to me.

Lady Fey, thank you so much for the greeting. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to introduce myself or not and then I didn't know where to post even if I was supposed to. lol I should probably be more aware, but I'm still getting used to this type of board. At any rate, I thought I'd just jump right into some conversations. For those of you who don't know me, I'm a former JW. I disassociated myself at age 17. I have been following a (what many would call) a pagan path for the past 6 years. I have a son and a wonderful boyfriend that means the world to me and my son. I am a Certified Surgical Technologist and I have my own business at home where I transcribe medical seminars and conventions. I have been studying herbs with my mother for the past 11 or so years. I am interested in the Etruscan culture and I study history and religion of all types as I feel that all contain some knowledge that can be beneficial. I claim no religion but I do practice kitchen witchery. It's a pleasure to be on this board, I know I will learn a lot because I already am. Cheers!!! ~Xirian~

Does God have any one organized religion he supports?

On the other hand, I think the kind of worship that really honors him doesn't need a name, a headquarters, a governing body, a charter, a house of worship, or any of the other accoutrements common to today's religions. I think that the kind of religion that honors and pleases God is seeing the opportunity to cheer someone up and taking it, sharing what you have with other people, avoiding pretense, and living life to the full. I think God is honored by us enjoying his handiwork and being willing to help others enjoy it. :-)
Now that sounds like a God I might be willing to worship.

I think it is important for you to realize that you have a very JW bias. You still think things logically should be seen the way that they teach. The problem is that they get alot wrong and shouln't be trusted. It's time to start from scratch.
Don't go to the Bible to find what you want it to say. Instead let it tell you what it has to say.
Put those JW glasses on the shelf.I would have to agree with your thoughts here. I think I have put many of the JW beliefs behind me (at least the ones that are no longer beneficial to me) and see things completely different than some of the people here and to tell you the truth, it sort of surprised me a little bit.
I personally do not revere the bible and if someone comes at me trying to back up the bible, by using the bible, it really doesn't make sense to me. If I wanted to prove I wasn't a liar, I certainly wouldn't expect you to believe my pleads that I'm not. I would like it if you did, but I wouldn't expect that you did. I would try to find proof from another source about my credibility. So all of these quotes from the bible after my last post, really had me a bit puzzled.
I personally don't understand God's truth, because I don't believe there is only one deity controlling the lives of all the people on the earth. I also don't believe that the God's truth has been proven to me without a doubt yet. So it is difficult for me to see the bible as anything less than a book of guidance for people living in another time and another place, a geneologic documentation of the people of the time and a political commentary, sometimes embellished or put into a fictional perspective for the protection of the writer (Revelations in particular) against the ruler of the times.
I believe everyone has a spiritual personality. I think religion is there to help you accept it and nurture it. I don't think religion is there for any other reason. I think one's spirituality can be nurtured without even knowing religion. It is something that many people tend to suppress especially those in religions such as the JWs because they are being bogged down with all of this accessory information coming at them and they're all receiving it at the same pace no matter what their learning curve, the door-to-door activities, the studies, conventions ect... It seemed that the JW religion would not even allow me the time to find my spirituality even if I had wanted to. Spirituality is subjective and all creatures contain it and I don't feel that you need to have God's spirit within you to work with your own. The word truth in relation to religion is a misnomer.

i agree. we are the ones that point to each other and say we are right you are wrong, not God. I reckon He will even save the witnesses as they do love God, just are misguided. You cant tell me the pioneer woman who devotes her life to Him wont be saved cos shes a jo-ho, just as the vicar who preaches trinity doctrine will be saved.
When you use the word saved here, what are you referring to? Where will you be saved? Saved from what? I realize the JW's and most religions believe in reincarnation of some sort, paradise earth, heaven, nirvana etc...
I do think you are right when you say we are the ones who say what is right or wrong. But seriously I can tell you that a Special Pioneer or someone like that may not be saved. They may just die and nothing else may happen to them except their energy being returned to the elements around them.
I guess I'm really just curious about the saved part. I am saved already because I am no longer clouded by the teachings of the JWs. I am saved because I can live a full life, make mistakes, learn from them in the way that is the most beneficial for me. I am saved because I am not tied down by dogma. I am saved because my family is taken care of, happy and prospering. I am saved because I am finally allowed to think for myself. I do not need a deity to save me. I have saved myself, as far as I'm concerned and that is much more rewarding than forcing myself to ignore other elements of my life so that I might get saved by a deity that I'm not sure is really there.
Just some thoughts.

Do you need God?
by daystar inwhen i first left the witnesses 15 years ago, i still believed in the jw god, jehovah, as the real and only "true" god and that all the others were not real.
they were real in that people worshipped them and as a distraction from "true worship", but to me, they were simply imaginary entities.. no other gods actually existed.
there was jehovah, satan, and the angels and demons.

Do you need God? Do any of us need God? Would a god be okay with us worshipping him out of fear?
Personally, I do not feel that one needs a deity to worship. However, I do worship many deities as I am a hard polytheist. I communicate with them as I would communicate with a dear friend. It has taken me many years to get to this point, but it is beneficial for me and my personal spiritual path. I do not claim a religion though.
Even though I believe in Gods, I tend to take a practical point of view towards them. I do not see them visually as I might see a human being. They have no real form. I believe that energy is the key to everything. Therefore, I believe that the deities only have identities because we have placed them on energy that was already here before us. I believe energy would exist without us, but not the deities. I believe that mythology is there to help guide us and that each mythology for whatever culture, is a reflection of the ideals and things that were and are important to that culture. Hope that makes some sort of sense. If you have any questions, I'd be happy to try and elaborate.
As for god being okay with us worshipping him out of fear, I would say that would be up to your deity that you were worshipping. I know there are many deities that would thrive on that type of energy. There are many who would not. I see the deities as having distinct personalities. As if I was with a friend. Each of my friends need different things from me and I from them. That is how I see the deities. Once you have made a connection with them, I feel that their needs or wants are evident. Generally manifested in some form of energy from you or others. If you don't believe in a deity it goes without saying that it doesn't matter.
I feel that research and knowledge is the key to finding out what you need from a deity and what deity may suit you best. Some people feel that you are chosen by your deities because of some need from them. I feel that ways both are appropriate. I'm sort of going on and on. But I think that your relationship with your deity is what is most important, because after all, this is your own personal spiritual path and no one can really tell you what the deities you worship are going to be able to do for you, or what they want from your. Only you can, IMHO.
