dear all, thank you for your warm welcome!
this is my story in short (pls excuse wrong spellings, english is not my native tongue and that it still became quite long).. i'm 34 and was born into the truth by parents who in their turn were baptist in young age.
i have one older sister who is currently serving at bethel with her husband and a younger brother who never embraced the truth (which was my big sorrow for many years).
Welcome, Newborn,
I totally relate to your name.

This is only part of our group. Mark Johnson, the blond guy in the middle, was our Bethel tour guide and
we took him out to dinner at Mama Leoni's. I think this picture was taken somewhere on the streets of NY.
Apparently that part of NY was a "red light" district at the time. I know we really got an eye and earful that
night. Gays, prostitutes, fights, drunks in the gutter, you name it. I know I was scared and praying to Jehovah. hee hee
We took a trip to several cities and Puerto Rico (where Fred and Ray were doing a Convention) in 1978 and
took a tour through Bethel while we were there in NY. We had three days in New York and Fred arranged for us to
stay at a motel in New Jersey called "Liberty Motel". We found out why it was called that after a day there.
Our teenage boys took in the sights from our second story balcony and watched the "comings and goings" of
prostitutes and their Johns. We got back late from our Bethel tour and had to walk a long way from the bus, one
of the little girls had to go to the bathroom really bad and rushed back to the motel only to find we were locked out.
We had not paid our bill for that day yet. We had to wake up the manager and get it settled. It was a "pay by the day
or "hour" kind of motel which we were not yet aware of. We ribbed Fred about his choice of accomodations for us for years.
The first day there we took the Port Authority bus. I think we must have walked at least two miles from the motel to the bus. We caused
quite a bit of notice, since there were 13 of us walking down the sidewalk.(Hard to not notice hee hee) and one NJ man asked us what we
were doing in NJ and we said "we are from California on vacation". He said: "Geez, you came here from CA on a vacation?" Shows how
crazy JWs actually are.
Randy, you are saying what a problem the presses were, well our tour guide, Mark Johnson, told us what cutting edge
they were and how smoothly and seamlessly they ran. I guess he was their PR man. hee hee The public never hears
about or sees the probems.
I like the idea of a book. I don't have much of an imagination, but what about "Stop The Presses, Armageddon is Near".
Love you guys,
Velta

i don't know whether anyone here has encountered a program called e-sword (with the hyphen in it like that).
it is bible study software that lets you install literally dozens of different translations of the bible to compare, plus dictionaries, maps, and commentaries (including historic commentaries like the ones ray franz describes in coc).
you can install both modern and historic translations, plus versions of the original greek and hebrew manuscripts as well as the latin vulgate and greek septuagint translations.
Heather,
Thank you so much for this post. I would be very interested in what the early Christians considered the Bible canon I am interested to know your research on Ecclesiastes also. Research
is on of my passions, however, I cannot read Hebrew or Greek, sadly. However, the Kingdom Interlinear was helpful when I did research on the word temple. Naos and hieron - I wish I had done more study on Bible languages when we first left the WT.
I think that even though the WT knows that Yahweh is closer to the name of God, they are locked into Jehovah because of their name Jehovah's Witnesses. How could they change, it would destroy their whole image.
This is an interesting post.

Yes, it is the same Fred Maes. I think God broke the mold when he made him.
I don't know of any other. hee hee
I would love to post the photos. If someone can tell me how.
I have them on a MySpace as well as my personal pictures, but
I just can't seem to get the gist of how to post them to JWD.
HELP!
Velta

Wow! possible-san,
Looks like you have every book the WT has written covered. I cannot read Japanese, but
looks like you have done a lot of research for us English-speaking XJWs. Arigato.
My granddaughter is teaching herself Japanese and want to go to Japan to the University.
Welcome to JWD.

Hi,
I am not wiccan, but my daughter's partner is. She says it means nothing.
Only that you had a bat in your house.
That is her take on it.

G-jobs. I think it was Walden Chin - who eventually became a CO and DO - who used to G-job "special" Bibles for us when he was at Bethel. We'd get them bound with the Make Sure (later Reasoning) book, with a leather cover and our names embossed on the cover. I'm pretty sure Walden was doing this right at Bethel.
I have one of those. Joe saw someone with one like it and had them bound for all our family. I don't have much WT literature left. We sold it all to a place where they sell
old WT stuff. I believe we got $400 for all of it. WT volumes back to 1948. I wish we had kept it. The old books are going for big bucks on Ebay. hee hee
I wanted to share a couple of photos with you. Some of you knew Fred and Maggie Maes. I have a picture of them just after they were married and pioneering in San Francisco. Also one of Fred at Bethel.
I am also including one of Fred's wife who he married in 1977 after Maggie left. There is also one of me at the Bethel Library (not sure which one) and Joe in front of the Factory. Fred died in 1998, but he had fond memories of some of you guys at Bethel. He had a few stories about Brother Knorr too. He terrified Fred when he first got to Bethel. He said he was very harsh and embarrassed Fred many times.
Maybe one of these days I will share some of Fred's cartoons. He went on to be a cartoonist in the real world and did several including a column for a short while for the Mobile Press-Tribune. He was a great guy with a real sense of humor. We miss him so much. Joe says he is cartooning for the angels. hee hee
Love you guys so much. Even though I never went to Bethel except for a couple of visits, I have a real heart connection to you esp. because of Fred. The first time we went to Bethel we stayed at a room in one of the WT bldgs. The second time we stayed in the Bossert before they redid it. What a dump! My daughters had friends in Fullerton whose brother went to Bethel in the 80s. I think his name was Grant Garcia.
I love this thread. I hope it just keeps going and we can hear more about the Bethel boys exploits. We had a tape from Paul Blizard when we first got out. Now that guy has some Bethel experiences! hee hee
Thanks so much.
Love and hugs,
Velta
