special talk 15.3.07 - what is official position on earthquakes?
by jeanV inthere is a lot of 1914, how jw's (then known as bible studends) anticipated it was a marked year.
ever since things are going bad, wars, wars and wars, food shortages, pestilences and earthquakes.
here the speaker mentions that earthquakes have increased tremendously since 1914. oh oh oh where did he get it?

thank you all for your comments. I guess it is better to continue the discussion on the special talk and earthquakes in just one thread:

Outlines still allow the speaker to develop it his own way. He did that wrong. Sad that most rank and file
(usually including the BOE) won't notice it.OTWO, there is a major problem with the WTBTS, they never say when something is outdated/changed. So if a speaker searches earthquakes on the WTL will still come across information that is clearly wrong but that the WTBTS never admitted to be wrong. In the specific, the point was in the outline with just RS as a reference (there were other references on earthquakes but not after the sentence that they have increased), but a speaker could still have added to it just by doing some research.
I guess one day they will have to add to outlines just to use quoted references

Must have been a local twist. Here, it was mentioned briefly that there had been earthquakes of great magnitude in the 20th century, killing hundreds of thousands, and that this was partly because people continued to build and live in areas exposed to them, NOT that there had been an increase in their occurence.
No, it was definitely in the outline, I saw it. The reference quoted is
rsp.236LastDays
"Therewillbegreatearthquakes"(Luke21:11)
It is true that there were major quakes in centuries past; furthermore, with their sensitive equipment scientists now detect more than a million quakes a year. But no special instruments are needed for people to know when there is a great earthquake.
Has there actually been a significant number of major earthquakes since 1914? With data obtained from the National Geophysical Data Center in Boulder, Colorado, supplemented by a number of standard reference works, a tabulation was made in 1984 that included only earthquakes that measured 7.5 or more on the Richter scale, or that resulted in destruction of five million dollars (U.S.) or more in property, or that caused 100 or more deaths. It was calculated that there had been 856 of such earthquakes during the 2,000 years before 1914. The same tabulation showed that in just69years following 1914 there were 605 of such quakes. That means that, in comparison with the previous 2,000 years, the average per year has been 20 times as great since 1914.
I guess the speaker in your hall is aware that the above statement is not correct and decided to skip the subject

I was JUST re-searching JW Forum AND the Watchtower Library to check on the Earthquakes thingy again. You are right, our speaker mentioned the same statistic - and I am in an European country - he had the outline in his hands and read from it!!!! So it must be in the outline.
it is in the outline. I had opened another topic on the same subject:

Honda duo say car not capable of more
By Pablo Elizalde Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button admitted there was nothing more to extract from their Honda car after another poor showing in qualifying in Bahrain.
Although both drivers made it to the second part of qualifying, neither got close to the top ten, with Barrichello having to settle for 15th position, one place ahead of Button.
Both men admitted that's the best they could have expected.
"This morning I had a few problems with the aerodynamic set-up of the car but this improved a little for qualifying," said Barrichello.
"The qualifying session itself was straightforward enough but I am getting the most from the car as it is right now and unfortunately that is 15th position. As always we will be looking for any possibilities to improve during the race."
A downbeat Button added: "We've qualified roughly where we have done for the past two races, and as we have acknowledged, that is as quick as the car goes right now.
"In Q1 I had a problem with the front wing. My first option (soft) tyre run was quite good and then during the next run on the option we lost masses of front downforce and at every corner I was locking up the fronts.
"I kept moving further rearwards on the brake bias but it didn't really help. In Q2 we tried a different front wing but it didn't improve things. I think we got the best from the car again today so it's down to what we can do in the race now."

race looks tight (and interesting), any of the top four could grab it. track is one of my favourite, first turn after the start is very critical, I hope hamilton does not crash there as I guess he'll start agressively while massa will try not to give way (he was heavily criticised during the week for his poor performance in Malaysia).
I also missed the first part of qualifying, Jense is in but way back on the grid. I like Button but he is being replaced by Hamilton as my favourite, not best, driver. Best after Schumy left is definitely Alonso. I do not particularly like massa and raikkonen (the finn is quick, but that's it).
I like Kubica, but he as been disappointing so far this season.
It is very difficult to see if the driver has a real influence on the car. I think so, but less than 20 or 30 years ago. Button is very good when things are going well, but does not make the difference when things are going bad (he isn't any better than Barry this year, which tells a story :( )

I could not believe my eyes, it is in the outline! with the following reference:

great stuff as usual, thank you blondie!
In Nazi Germany…Angola, Malawi, Mozambique….to wipe out Jehovah’s Witnesses. Their efforts have been in vain.
some were "self imposed" by JW policy
Jehovah's angels can maneuver matters so that any who cause others to stumble are removed from among Jehovah's people.
and they do it in a selective way I get so irritated when some thank Jehovah because they manage to survive without blood transfusions (experiences that are regularly cited in magazines, KM, etc...). what about those that die? Ah in that case it was to test the faith
Such experiences are far too numerous to be dismissed as coincidence.
statistics and mathematics are not an opinion. if you spend a billion hour doing something, you are bound to reap some results.

When is the Special Talk?
by tinker inmy son invited me but i lost the email.
he is giving the talk...yikes!.

jeanV
yes it is this week-end. a lot of 1914 (with no mention of 607 BTW) and how bad the world is going.
I post a separate topic on earthquakes (that are mentioned in the talk) as I am puzzled on what the official position is.
there is nothing really special about the special talk, it is designed for "interested ones" and is given worldwide on the same week-end.
