It's funny, the larger they grow, the more they are becoming carbon copies of other religions out of legal/political necessity.

How is magisterium different from Governing Body?????
by Terry inlet me introduce you to a term used in the roman catholic church you may not be familiar with: governing body.
in the roman catholic church the word "magisterium" refers to the teaching authority of the church.
this authority is understood to be embodied in the episcopacy, which is the aggregation of the current bishops of the church, led by the bishop of rome (the pope), who has authority over the bishops, individually and as a body, as well as over each and every catholic directly.

What are the outrageous things did the elders do to you?

I was told that I had to drop out of the volunteer fire fighter force because it showed a lack of respect for my life.
I was livid. It was fine for strangers to risk their lives but not a witness because we had a more important work to do in preaching. To risk my life would be an insult to Jehovah.
I hoped their houses would burn to the ground as the firefighters respected their sanctity of life by not risking their own containing the blaze.

How do you know when someone has given something to you?
by Elsewhere ini have come upon a situation in which i am a bit confused.
if someone drops a phone book on your front porch.
has the previous owner transferred ownership to you?.

Interesting question in the context given.
If you had the boot removed would they try to charge you for replacement? How could they prove you removed and even had it? All they have as record that someone put it there.
If they charge you with replacement, then it does imply that at very least responsibility without ownership was placed on you without your concent.
I'd be interested in hearing if any city has tried to procecute someone for boot-theft, lol.

The JEHOVAH game (a modern fetish)
by Terry in1.we use a name to distinguish one entity from another to avoid confusion.. 2.if there is only one of something it is one of a kind.
elivis is elvis and those who pretend to be him are impersonators.
those who pretend to be jesus are false or pseudo-christs.

So... Rutherford wrote the King James Bible? JEHOVAH is in there, in big letters.
Regardless of what we call our superiors, the Bible shows that God wants us to call Him by name.
That's probably why He caused it to be there nearly 7,000 times.
So important that they inserted his name into the "New Testament" in place of LORD. To be fair, more modern copies of the scriptures had replaced and then subsequently removed the name "Jehovah" from their translation of the NT.
Therein lies the beauty of it all. The bible has been so throughlly altered, mistranslated and corrupted over the years that you can just cherry pick whatever ancient text you like the most and form a religion with a nice solid foundation.

Death ... friend or enemy?
by The Berean inwithout a life expectancy, would mankind stagnate?
what incentive would there be to stay busy, set goals, desire a mate and children, or care for others who would never be in harms way?
why would we do anything today if we always had a tomorrow?could it be that death is natures prod and a necessary motivator of life and should be thus celebrated?.

Thoughts From A Jew
by shamus100 inhaving never really met or been friends with a jewish person, i must say that i was quite amused by his amusement of my little cult experience.
he is serving on a board to help fundraise for his synagogue, and i met many people there, including a lesbian sitting on the board.. gay people in a religion?
strange?.

I have several reformed jewish friends. In my opinion it's more of a culture/social group than religion.
I get the feeling if science was able to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that there was no God of any sort, they'd drop the ceremony and keep meeting.

"your just happier now because you don't have to be good any more!"

His mind had already flipped to his witness personality His reply was directed to himself not you. He needed to hear that your happiness was tainted somehow and since you weren't going to say it, he filled it in, patted himself on the back and shut off his thinking.
I don't think there would be any retort that he would have actually heard.

I think laughter is the mind's way of resolving conflicts that have no easy resolution or established method for recognition.

I think some are offended by the questioning of their caring. But deep down, they hold an innate fear that "who cares" is not just a question, it's a hint at the fundamental makeup of human nature, and a hammering chipping away at the facade of give a damn.
Does that mean you care? :)

Why is it so cold this winter? Science, not hype.
by Paralipomenon inwith this being a hot topic on the board right now (bad pun sorry) i discovered an interesting article offering an explanation from real scientists.. http://www2.ucar.edu/magazine/currents/brrr-ao-way-low.
the article does a nice generic explanation, then gets alot more technical if you are so inclined.
if you follow the climate change debate and have heard one side saying this is the result of the artic warming up from global warming, or another side saying the cold is evidence of a lack of warming, you'll be interested in hearing what they have to say on the topic specifically:.

And what about climate change?
Although the AO/NAO/NAM rise and fall on many time scales, the wintertime values have slowly inched upward since the 1950s, as hinted at in the chart below. Global temperatures have also climbed during the same period. However, says Deser, “Just because the NAM has risen while global temperatures have risen does not mean that the latter causes the former."
In a 2009 Journal of Climate paper, Deser and NCAR’s Adam Phillips note that some model simulations of latter 20 th century climate reproduce the weak upward trend in the NAO. However, it’s not statistically significant compared to natural variability. Other studies that focus on 21st-century climate project a continued rise in the average NAO.
According to the Hurrell and Deser paper, “One of the most urgent challenges is to advance our understanding of the interaction between greenhouse gas forcing and the NAO.” Yet even if the AO/NAO/NAM continues trending upward in the long run, shorter-term ups and downs will continue to unfold—just as they’re doing this winter.
Nice to see an article that offers their analysis on what is going on without positioning on either side and avoiding the hype. So if you are debating climate change this winter, I hope you take the time to read this article.
