during a disciplinary procedure, what would the response be if you wanted representation?
an advocate?.
why don't they have a group of unbiased men, a prosecutor to present the case against you and an advocate that would represent the accused?

thedog1,
Your message showed up.
My matter was not that I misbehaved. I had a conscience matter that involved Genesis 22. The entire series of letters, including Bethel's response is on line. I will find the link.
The issue, as simply as I can state it,then and now is that it seemed more proper to allow me to read the bible account of what God asked of Abraham rather than the interpretation in My Book of Bible Stories.
The brothers initially--Or at least the one they let speak for them--told me that I must use the literature as it stood. I asked "Not the Bible?" He laid his hand on the yellow Bible Story Book and told me to use it. He told me that I had my own interpretation of the account. I told him, not so. The word for "burnt offering" carried not the same meaning as "sacrifice" in Hebrew. Therefore the Book of Bible Stories was the interpretation--I wanted at least to allow for the ambiguity of the text in view of the contradictions (unanswerable and horrible) the literature presented.
They recessed and to it to the Circuit Overseer. Then it went to Bethel.
I wanted to know if you would have told me not to read the Bible account instead of the Bible Story Book.

thedog1,
I hope you respond to my question on page 1.
To Gopher's point, I signed on to follow the bible (I took it very seriously). The literature trumped the bible I discovered. What was I to do?
i conducted the wt study tonight on higher education.
i wondered what the reaction of the bros and sis would be.
there was no deviation from the idea that a university education is not a good idea.
thedog1,
Please tell us what you think of CoC when you finish it. I read it after I was out.

though he is a typical wt slave, we are like david and jonathan.. in my most intimate conversation with him, i asked him:.
how do you manage serving an organization built on inherent contradictions?.
he said: organization helps people to grow spiritual, like any other religious organizations do.
There's a new thread just started--a N.Y. Times article about the defrocked Methodist minister whose personal faith collided with his church.
Hard to see where you can have a faith inside of you that grows beyond the borders of doctrine still fits in a church.
Is any religion big enough to house individual growth?

Thedog1,
I am fascinated that you are engaging on this topic.
I df'd after a long series of interviews with elders, and a long wait for Bethel to research and respond to my case.
The overwhelming realization that got me out was the fear so evident among the men incharge in my congregation when I presented an issue to them that, I see now, had only one outcome: to remain a Witness I had to get rid of my conscience.
I presented them with a conscience matter that though biblically sound, did not affirm the interpretation in the literature. But that was not in dispute, ultimately. Bethel's response made that clear that my conscience was a thing I could carry in silence in the congregation or else.
The brothers were evidently not at liberty to reason from the scriptures with me on the matter. the local brothers, that is. I was particularly amazed that a brother, a personal friend and advocate of sorts--and I had thought a man of faith and bravery, was not "open any more". In the first meeting with a large number of elders I asked if I might simply read what verses the bible said and let it go at that--one brother laid his hand on the literature and said: read from this.
What would you do?
Not to derail this thread --you can pm me if you like.

jgnat--
Isn't it a problem with even the most liberal of churches to declare that, in the end, you must acknowledge their even very modest creed?
The nature of a religion is it's structure. They do distinguish themselves according to a structured creed/belief.
Finding oneself in a church where you no longer believe, say, what others believe about the bible will get you in trouble or else ..silent in the church.

Religions think they are taking you on a guided tour of faith. You step on their "bus"at the church, it takes you all over the place to show you the wonders of God. But in the end it makes sure you are dropped off right where you got on in the first place: at their church door.
This guy is messed up. A true cynic.
so i grew up in new jersey in a very urban part of the state.
i literally only saw white folks if they were in a police car or if i went to the assembly.
the funny thing is at the assembly there was still a level of segregation as well although it was self-imposed.
It takes a village to raise a......racist. At the very least a silent village.
CAA- people of color and women often try to do the same thing about rotten, demeaning actions toward them, IMO. We try to rationalize it, keep the peace. And when we are young? OMG, we are really unequal to this crap.
I am glad you are saying something NOW. Silence is not golden in this case.
