  Isabella Bird - a really tough old bird ?

  isabella was one of those indomitable british women, perhaps channeling queen victoria who roamed the world during the relatively short british ascendency.

  my interest in her is because of her journeys through australia (didn't think much of oz), hawaicentral asia, japan, korea and china, (and other places) and her valuable eye-witness accounts of her journeys.. in 1896, at the age of 64, she set off on a journey of exploration of the yangzi river and the border regions of sichuan province and tibet.

  and its her impressions of china, at the end of the 19th c, that i want to share.. .

  I read her biography a while ago, and her narratives of her trips. Have you read about the trip she took in Colorado? Estes Park. Some amazing stuff in that story. She was an indomitable old Bird! I like her story, so impressive, and others of a similar nature like Freya Stark, Gertrude Bell, Marianne Kingsley and one of my favorites: Alexandra David-Neal. Thanks for starting this topic, I love reading these books. Have you read The Gobi Desert, by Mildred Cable and Francesca French? The fact that they were missionaries doesn't make the story any less interesting.

  I had a fantasy, in my China traveling days, of traveling from Xian by train as far as it goes toward Pakistan, so I could see the places Cable and French saw. Then take a bus or something to Pakistan to travel on the Karakorum highway. Unfortunately pretty much for my most adult life, Pakistan has been a little too dangerous, and then the time passed and I never got my trip.

  they want me to basically define my duties by writing my own job description.

  Also, your answer didn't deal with the question. You answered with a sum of items that would be in your contract. But he wanted to know what your job description is, as you see it. You didn't answer that at all.

  Didn't they already have a job description to help them find the right person with the right set of skills? What kind of company hires someone at significant pay and says, "well, tell us what you'd like to do here so we can make it official."

  I don't know whether I actually believe this.

  former unbaptized publisher, here.. i'm new to the forums and have hesitated for months to join this forum.

  i was raised in a jw family, and was never baptized, because one of my parents didn't think i should be baptized early.. my mother became inactive, but i eventually went back for social contact, eventually starting a study.

  i raised a few questions, only to find that the conductor would get irritated and defensive when my questions would get deeper into the topic.

  i feel as though i'm losing it.. firstly, my mom isn't baptized but has been around witnesses for a long time.

  when i was in, she would have problems with the religion.

  we were always at ends with eachother.

  Ignore it. She'll settle back down into her old routine. If you push her on it, she'll get defensive and more JW.

  You get on with your life, let her do whatever she wants. I used to tell my mother, "Mom, I don't want to hear it."

  When "The Persecution" Comes - What a Let Down that turned out to be!

  when i was young there was endless speculation about "the persecution".

  i have very clear memories as a child sitting in the old kingdom hall in coatbridge hearing it talked about from the platform.

  it was a frequent topic at home.. sometimes there was lurid detail about what sort of torture "they" might use against us to make us betray others.

  It makes me laugh now when I think about it. Everyone seemed so interested in the gruesome possibilities, a little bit crazy and superstitious. I remember a woman saying, "Oh god I hope my torture isn't rats. I hate rats!" As if there was a special torture planned for each person. JWs aren't that important.

  as it's conflated with witnessing, meetings and so forth...what's the most extreme sacrifice you made for those things?

  for me it was my mental health and maybe a career in something cooler than being an office fungus.. you?.

  I just realized....

  i just realized i've basically lost the past 30 years of culture... listening to music, being rediscovered and discovering new music... political stuff happening around the world and yes, dammit, all that political stuff is important!!!

  tons of other things that, thanks to the wts's very diligent application of the i part of the bite method (information control) i am only beginning to find out or discover.... .

  I remember lots of political things, civil rights in the south, various assassinations, Taiwan out of the UN and PRC in overnight, Nixon, lots of stuff like that. I remember, for instance, watching Nixon's speech on the news, we were all dressed for the KH but watched his resignation speech before heading out. BUT, I missed out on many years of music, movies, television, arts and so on. I did pay a lot of attention to folk singers, protest singers back in the 60s and 70s, but after that, not much for many years.

  Very patronizing, sanctimonious and arrogant all at once. Also very funny. I'm afraid my response would be, "piss off," as I don't have time for people like that. You're probably going to ignore the letter and that is smarter.
