I remember one CO who came up with a ban on spiked hair in our congregation. And the unwritten rule was for any brother with any kind of responsibility at the hall should wear "appropriate" dress and hairstyles. If there were any questions as to what was appropriate, look at the examples in the pictures found in the watchtower and awake.

What "Unwritten Rules" Did Your Congregation Have?
by minimus ini knew of a hall that allowed only white shirted speakers on the platform for sunday public talks!
when a visiting speaker did not wear the official white shirt he was either told that he couldn't give the talk or he could change shirts,as the hall kept a variety of sizes, just in case of an emergency!!!
i don't make this up.

The significance of this image...
by Awakened07 inthey say a picture is worth a thousand words.. .
to me, the picture posted below is one of the - if not the - most significant images i've seen so far in my life.
as i was growing up (a jw), i was taught that the universe was in perfect harmony.

My wife's take on the Sept OKM Question Box part
by erandir inwell, i asked my wife about the meeting she went to on thursday and how the question box part went.
the good news, for me, is that she agrees with me that the fds is obviously trying to clamp down on independent thinking and is being very contradictory.
she said she had in mind during the meeting the scripture about "where 2 or more are gathered in my name, there i am also" and also the scripture about the boreans.

Well, I asked my wife about the meeting she went to on Thursday and how the Question Box part went. The good news, for me, is that she agrees with me that the FDS is obviously trying to clamp down on independent thinking and is being very contradictory. She said she had in mind during the meeting the scripture about "where 2 or more are gathered in my name, there I am also" and also the scripture about the Boreans.
A "super elder," i.e. company man, made the comment during the part that the Society is "forbidding independent study using anything other than the Society's publications." However, a very well balanced and intelligent brother well-known for his habit of independent research promptly made a follow up comment saying that "No, the Society is merely saying that it cannot endorse independent study not using it's publications. The society isn't forbidding this when in fact they themselves have to do it in order to create the publications." No one disagreed with this, at least openly.
When I heard this from my wife, I was thinking that there is hope for the congregation yet. There are a few who speak their minds and don't swallow everything from the publications and the platform without critically analyzing it.

Why use the word apostate?
by greendawn inwhy should we define ourselves by what the fds defines us?
our enemies who seek emotional control over us even after we left their destructive cult have invested a lot of effort to demonize us with the word apostate and when we use the term ourselves we do their work for them.
most so called apostates simply thought about things deeply and came up with many questions that the jws instead of answering in a logical manner labelled these inquiring minds as demon inspired apostates doubting the god appointed fds and expelled them from their org.

How about "antiwitness"? Kind of like antichrist.
Or antidub, maybe.
Or cultfree.

marmot, welcome to the forum! In spite of what the KM question box has to say, you keep up that independent research. You've already seen how they are using this new question box to attempt to shut off the minds of their followers. Thanks for the example of an elder using this information so soon to quelch independent study.

It continues to amaze me how I could have existed in a mind-controlled state for so long and not realize it. It only takes stepping back a ways to see it, and this transcript makes it all so obvious.
That stepping back concept is what the FDS is so afraid of. They know that once a person becomes an individual again, the mind control loses its grip. Of course they call it "the one isolating himself seeks his own selfish longing" to paraphrase a proverb. And they discourage independent study groups or independent thought.

ATTN WT MONITORS!! Enforcement Action Needed NOW!!
by Open mind inthere is a disturbing trend in my area that desperately needs attention from headquarters.
congregations are getting together for picnics, parties, "fun nights", etc.
this shocking disregard for theocratic order reached a head recently when what should have been termed a "get together" was flagrantly referred to as "the congregation picnic"!!!

Then about 5 years ago (around here, US West Coast) more parties just for the sake of having a party started happening. Has anyone else noticed a similar trend?
Yeah...our congregation would organize a couple a year over the past 7 years, I'd say because that's all I've known of the witnesses is 7 years. They still do occassionally and there are smaller gatherings on a book study-size level as well.
