As of tomorrow I will no longer be a JW

after my last post where i asked for advice on how to handle whether i should tell an elder that we've been going to church, i decided to tell a local elder who's related to me through marriage.

this was to save my dad having to 'report' me (i'd told my dad we go to church).

anyway, i had an interesting chat with him and he said some very personally revealing things re.

Hi Mark and welcome to the rest of your life.

Well done for doing what you're doing. Are you prepared for the shunning? Don't make the mistake that I did. I genuinely thought most of my "friends" in the truth would never treat me so unkindly, but they did. Every single one treated me like a pariah because, like you, I started going to church and was chased down by elders for it. I was left with no choice but to disassociate.

Please don't get your hopes up that the brothers wont treat you like dirt, they probably will. I made the mistake of thinking more highly of them than they deserved and my hurt and disappointment was acute, requiring councilling.

You have an opportunity now to be prepared for this. If you are, you'll do well.

i know i don't post here that often but this just kind of blew me away.

my dad just "came out" recently as annointed and i find it so weird.

he's always been pretty level headed and he's been in for over 30 years.

Pro's and Con's of DAing myself.

i have been wrestling with the idea of da'ing myself for close to a year now.

but there is a small area in my subconscious that whispers "this is not a good idea.

i haven't been to a meeting in over six months, no service in seven years.

I understand where you're coming from. I too DA'd and felt at the time it was absolutely the right decision for me. My immediate family had all left and I was the last one standing. My elderly parents were still witnesses and I read the letter to them before posting to get their opinion on whether they would shun me. They both said they would NEVER do that regardless of what the elders said, which was a relief.

At the same time I was being hounded by the local elders on whether I had joined another church or not. I was being watched all the time which was becoming intolerable, so DAing was a way for me to avoid a JC and being disfellowshipped.

Like you, I also felt a real deperate need to definately seperate myself from an organization that had stolen the best years of my life and betrayed me. I live in a small village and was well known as a Witness by all. I did not want ANYONE to associate me with that organization again.

So if you feel strongly that DAing is the right thing to do for your conscience, then I would first talk it through with your dad or any other family that might be affected, it might have a bearing on your decision.

Did you ever go in field service after realizing it was not the truth?

i did not, but i did fs when i had seriuos doubts and i thougt some householders had pretty good arguments some times, but i could not admit it of course.. and i did fs for a long time after i realized the magazines was very very poor.

i still remember my very last hour from door to door.

geee that was torture, i hatet myself and hoped no one was at home.. do you remember your last fs hour?

I couldn't stomach going out with the Society's literature the last time I went on FS. (about 18 months ago) I just had the bible in my hand. Everyone thought I was so spiritual for just using the bible but didnt realise that I regarded EVERY piece of WT literature as used toilet paper. I was so repulsed and disgusted by their deceipt that I wouldn't touch it.

Did the Society predict the crash of 1927 or the boom and bust years of the early 90's. Nope. So whats the difference now? They're just good at hedging their bets as Mary so aptly demonstrated.

the best questions will be used in a video series on watchtower comments.

the goal is to help people respond to jws.. the question must be direct and designed to open the jw mind, not necessarily to win an argument.. i would prefer to avoid doctrinal debate such as trinity, cross, even thiest/athiest subjects.

The "silver bullet" moment for me was simple. Just one scripture. Luke 21 v 8.

"He said: "Look out that YOU are not misled; for many will come on the basis of my name, saying, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The due time has approached.’ Do not go after them"

That alone got me thinking and investigating.

3 day event in London for Ex-JWs 2009

i have been talking to steve hassan who is the author of 'combatting cult mind control" about coming to london for a 3 day event in autumn 2009. initially the idea was to make it all about jehovah's witnesses and support for those having left the religion and leaving their jw issues behind them.

we may make this an event for ex-cult members in general, but there will be a big section specifically catering to the issues surrounding the jw organisation, leaving it and life after it.

the cost of steve being there and flying to london; will be shared amongst those attending, so there will be a ticket price for the event, which i will figure out later when i've got an idea of how many will be likely to attend.. .

new tract campaign next year for the memorial

just heard that there will be another tract campaign next year to invite people for the memorial.

These campaigns are great. My local cong were very obedient and blitzed the territory with last year's leaflet, They had 35 LESS at the memorial than the year before. Result!
