Its a tongue-in-cheek way of saying "we don't really believe you're anointed but we'll humour you for now".

Should friendship be unconditional? No I don't think so. We all have criteria for judging whether we want someone as a friend or not. JW's are no different, its just their criteria is set out for them. They're not allowed to make a personal judgment for themselves on who constitutes a friend, they've got to conform 100% to the Society's judgment on this.
Their conditions of friendship isn't based on the type of person you are but on what you believe. Even if you NEVER talk about your beliefs, just the fact that your not a JW immediately puts you into a catagory that the Society designates as "bad association". Its this sweeping generalization and the resultant injustice of this that makes most of us bristle with indignation.
And what is more, its frustrating not having a voice or a platform for defence against this. If we complain against this injustice, we're "persecuting" them and proving to them we're not nice people and the Society were right all along. If we try and say hello even though we're not supposed to, we're "disrespecting" them, which proves we're not nice people and the Society were right all along. If we give to charity, take care of sick relatives, work hard for our family etc, none of this counts as we're not "working wholesouled for Jehovah" which proves we're not nice people and the Society were right all along.
Its ALWAYS about the Society and their criteria for who makes a friend. ALWAYS. That why, whilst I still feel the hurt of those that follow such criteria blindly, I know where the real blame lies. In Brooklyn.

Oh Matt!
I can't believe what I just heard! How on earth did you maintain your cool thru all that? I was getting hett up just listening to it! How they can sit there and say "we only want to help you" when they clearly had already found you guilty before you even got there. I hope you NEVER take them up on their offer to go back.
The blatant injustice is appalling. It beggers belief how 2 elders can commend you for keeping your own council and at the same time accuse you of spreading apostate ideas. The whole thing stinks...
Thank you so much for keeping a cool head under pressure and getting those recordings. They'll prove invaluable for showing JW interested ones just what'll likely happen to them if they ever disagree with the Society - even after leaving.

That article is disgusting. I didn't leave my friends, they left me. I was still the same person the sisters had always known but I'd come to realise the Organization was wrong. I still said hello to the sisters when I saw them as I always did, but it was them that turned their back on me, not the other way round.
I hadn't changed, my faith was still strong and my love for God undiminished. But their friendship is totally conditional on whether you love the Organization, nothing to do with your love for God or not.
Life's been getting better lately but after reading that article i feel upset again. I really loved those people! They were my closest friends for 21 years. We shared holidays, family experiences, good times and bad together, all supporting each other. I really thought they knew me well and would understand that I am the same person!! I haven't changed.
And now this piece of crap from the Watchtower.
Nothing, NOTHING will make me go back to this Org, they are the epitome of evil, an iron fist in a velvet glove and I HATE the GB for what they've done to me - and everyone still taken in by their bull.

Going by the comments on here and looking down the list of symptoms, I get the feeling Aspergers is very common. Could it be that everyone is just "normal" after all and this label has been made up to describe particular personality traits?
Just a thought....

Matt still has occasion to speak to his mum, and we have had glimpses of the Nan we knew, but on the whole the relationship is no longer a natural one and is strained. It leaves you feeling drained as you feel you have to always be on your best behaviour, be pleasant, be civil, be conciously aware of coming across as normal and happy to dispel any searching in them to find a fulfillment of any personal prophecies they'e made concerning you, so they can't turn round and say "I told you so".
You perfectly describe my relationship with my dad. Draining.
