My email to my mother - sorry a bit long
by darthweef inhello - i am new here .. just joined a couple of days ago, and have enjoyed the bit of lurking that i have done.
a breif history, i was raised as a jw, was active until i was 36, and was a regular pioneer for 7 years and a ministerial servant for 5 years, and was one when i left.
my reasons for leaving are not important at this point, but i have spent the last year or so researching the flood and more extensively the theory of evolution.. i have finally decided to broach the topic with my mother since after all this time, the last of my jw friends and my brother and sister have all decided that they should shun me now, and i want to make a last ditch effort to convey to my mother that i didn't leave the organization so i could do lines of coke off a cheap hooker, but because i actually believe that this is not the truth.. i'd love some feedback on the email and what you think the possibility of it actually breaking through the "permafrost" created by the society.

Welcome! I'm glad to hear you have a good life outside the Watch Tower. You're so well written and apparently well read. Have you been to or are you going to college? If not, do you plan to?

Just wanted to say hello
by Suraj Khan ini've only very recently discovered this site and have been reading many compelling personal accounts and testimonials.
i'd like to share my own as well.. i was born into 'the truth' in the early 1970s.
along with my several (fleshly) brothers and sisters, i went through the usual travails of a witness boy - not celebrating birthdays, not pledging allegiance to the flag, not singing christmas carols in the class chorus.

Welcome! My brother shunned me for 18 years, and then he called me out of the blue one evening to tell me that he was no longer a jw. And the void between us closed so quickly that you could hear it being sucked through a vaccum, LOL!

Oh, the pain
by Cirkeline init hurts like hell to listen to my 17 yo girl, crying, saying she misses our real relationship.
that she gets depressed every time we talk about spiritual things.
and i really do the utmost to leave it out of our conversations.

Don't talk to her about cult activities. Is there anything she likes to do besides field service and meeting attendance? If so, change the subject to her secular interests when she brings up her cultic endeavors. Spend as much time with her as you can having fun and doing interesting things.

It's still bugging me...
by mrsjones5 inbut instead saying something i most likely would regret later i'm going to rant here.. this was touched on on otwo's thread.
there's a jw woman who's kids go to the same school as mine.
my oldest son is friends with this woman's oldest son.

I have a diferent idea...instead of telling a fib, tell the truth...to your mom. You could say something like, "Mom, I'd be very careful about associating with Sister So and So. She's sooooooooo gossipy." Then when your mom asks you what Sister So and So said about her, be coy and say, "Mother, surely you don't want me to be a gossip, do you!?"

How many here smoke?

I started smoking at 13, gave it up at 17 in order to be baptized, and abstained for seven years. But I never lost my craving for cigarettes. It was absolute torture to see someone smoking in a movie or television show! I loved to be around people who were smoking. I started back after I left the cult and have smoked ever since. Yes, I've tried the patch and pills several times, and nothing has broken that craving. I know it's crazy! My granddaddy died from COPD from smoking, and my husband's sister and mother both died from lung cancer. Since the price has gone up so high, we now buy cigarettes at the roll your on stores where you purchase the tubes and cut pipe tobacco and use a commercial rolling machine. There are none of the chemicals of regular cigarettes, and my husband and I both smoke a little less. I'm trying to cut back some more.
If you don't smoke, please don't start. It is NOT cool to be a slave to craving and impulse.

Angry/Pouty Father In Law
by TOTH inseveral months ago my father in law abused his key priveleges for the final time.
he barged in after my son and i had left and harassed my darling wife/his daughter and tried to bully her into giving him her pain medication.
when i heard about the situation after he had left we decided that the locks needed to be changed.

I remember reading about your f-i-l bullying your wife for pain meds. Please, before he hurts himself or someone else, call his doctor about his addiction. You may even be able to do it anonymously.
