a more detailed look at the just released american religious identification survey (aris) shows witnesses have increased from 1,331,000 in 1991 to 1,914,000in 2008. that is 583,000 more people, or a whopping 43.8 percent growth.

they now make up 0.8 percent of the u.s. population.. who says jws are in the decline?.

It's all relative. If I have one penny and add one penny to it, I have a 100% increase. If I have 100 pennies and add 1 penny, the numerical increase is the same but the percentage changes dramatically. The number started out low so the percentage looks very impressive. What are the numerical increases for other religions?

Graphic Design Assist Needed....

completely unjw related..other than it is part of my path away from watchtower and on to fun real life stuff... lol.. i am part of a social club on my college campus that works on environmental and sustainability ("green") issues.

last semester we changed the name of the club and i also started on a new logo (currently a 1mb .bmp).

we had someone working on it but they have disappeared.

Thanks, but not it. It's "chalkboard" on Mac OS X (one word not two) or I may be able to use chalkboard cy.

I need the chalkboard font - any suggestions? I can't find it online to buy anywhere. Supposedly it comes standard w/ Mac OSX. The pc equivalent is comic sans but frankly, they are sooooo different that I can't substitute. Anyone out there? Help?

Madoff, Stock Market and WTS

so many non-profits have lost millions of dollars in the madoff fraud.

i know there has been some discussion in the past on wts investments...i wonder if they were invested.

it would be interesting to see just how much they have lost in the markets over the past two years.

It would be interesting to see just how much they have lost in the markets over the past two years. I would be there is a direct correlation between that, the payoffs, and the changes we've seen. Further, the money invested in the buildings in NYC can't possibly have the same value as it did as the real estate market tanks. For true believers in NYC, this probably IS the beginning of The Great A since god wouldn't let the WTS go broke (remember how often we had it drilled into us that HS funded the publications of the magazines?).

Wouldn't it be interesting if the actual downfall of the WTS isn't scandal, abuse, or education...but that they merely go broke? Anyone done any type of forensic accounting?

Octarian Prince - Totally agreed. This started out as a curiosity - I remembered the book as being the only one that was "objective" and "factual" and not ramming WT theology through. Now that I'm studying fact-based and objective sources on religion (fascinating, by the way) I wanted to do a comparison for my own knowledge.

Stilla - thanks for taking the time to post all of that. I've just downloaded Atlantis' pdf. Immediately (and I am by no means a real scholar, I'm just getting my toes wet) this is what jumps out when I look at this through "non-cult" eyes:

1. Cleverly woven throughout are phrases that are NOT objective - for example, consistently referring to Hinduism beliefs/teachings as "mythology". Wonder how they'd feel if Hindus referred to WT teachings as "mythology"?

2. This really irritated me: "Oh, how much of this religious teaching hangs on the ancient Babylonian concept of the immortal soul!" Um. Thanks for the commentary. First of all, Hindus do NOT believe in an "immortal soul" as christianity believes. To imply that they believe in an immortal soul and that it is similar to mainstream christianity is insulting beyond belief. Secondly, they go right to "according to the bilbe, this despising and disdaining of hte material life is diametrically oppsed to Jehovah God's original purpose for mankind." ---

There is NO mention that Hinduism is considered to be the world's oldest religion - instead it is dismissed as "while it may not be as widespread as some other major religions".

3. Again - cult kneejerk reaction - tying Hinduism into "babylonian" teachings - not very accurate at all.

There is so much more here but I'm getting angry and I've got things to do today so I may have to finish this up later.

Also - interesting they had to throw in some paragraphs calling it a "sex cult" and mention "phallic symbols" several times. Most of the examples they picked were of fringe parts of Hinduism as well - pick the most extreme examples to throw out there.
