Information and Education will be your best friend in this matter.
Regarding using other translations, use multiple translations. In fact, get one of those 26 in 1 translations of the Greek (New Testament) Bibles. (I have one, they are handy for comparison purposes). The Society uses multiple translations all the time (when it suits their purposes) and the references are in the publications.. But use the NWT as the primary source for now. Don't scare your fiancee (or send up the apostate alarm bells). Let her think for herself. You are already ahead of the game by her agreeing it is good to go to school and stop pioneering. Just reassure her of your love for her. She just needs to be secure. You dont say if you (or she) were raised in the "truth". That makes a huge difference.
Regarding the lazy MS's.... are they squeaking by because their daddies are elders? or they are buddies with them? (Just curious).
Keep looking and learning. Know that the JWD board is here to support you no matter.

As a long time lurker and recent poster I am sympathetic to your situation. Until recently I was an elder. I also served as a regular pioneer. I have had many other privileges, but if I were to say here it would identify me very quickly. I am trying to fade. Unlike you, I do not have a fiancee to worry about (I had one last year, but she ended it over her own personal issues). Today I went to the
pukingpublic talk but left before the WTrash Study. I do have a mother still in the "Truth" Borg. It is because of her I stay in.I am glad to hear that you are seriously questioning what you are being
spoonfedforce fed with a fire hose by the Society. If you love your fiancee, and I am sure you do, take it slowly with expressing doubts. Maybe she is afraid to reveal too much for fear of losing YOU. Discuss with your fiancee the need for education to provide for your family. If she agrees, then enroll in college/university. Of course, you will be too busy to pioneer, so "regretfully" resign so you can pursue your education so you can "take care of your wife". Depending on the congregation, they BOE may call into question your qualifications as an MS. Again, discuss this with your future bride. If the BOE is squawking to much, then "humbly" "step aside" to focus your attention on your future family.If you need to fade slowly, go through the motions. Go out in FS with your fiancee all the time in the car group (no reason to question that, eh?) Use the time productively to have conversations with her. If you feel hypocritical about peddling the mags/lit, then just use the Bible and tracts. (That's what I did for years). If you still have a "magazine route", then keep it up, but don't add to it. (it will get harder in January when the mags go to one "public edition" each month). Make sure you comment once each meeting (or at least let the elders see your hand up for 5 seconds). Don't set off any alarms or raise any red flags.
Communication will be the key to your future relationship with your fiancee. I hope this goes well with you. There are many of us current JWs on the board. Some posting, many more lurking...waiting...waiting....
As for the large font poster...ignore em. Think for yourself. Most of us on JWD want the best for you. Ultimately, use what you learn here to guide you, but decide for yourself. UNLIKE the Borg, we allow independent thinking. (OMG what a concept!)

A Major Dream Has Been Fulfilled!!!!!

last year i applied, and about two weeks ago i was accepted.
that was cool, but i had no way of paying for it, and the financial aid i applied for would not cover enough of the tuition, and other fees.

After 20+ years of listening to the Borg tell me higher education was evil, I am finishing my 2 year associates degree this week. (Believe me, as a former elder, I got tons of grief for it) Unfortunately, I have to take another half dozen classes at my local community college for it to be considered a transfer degree to go on to the (non Borg approved) bachelor's degree. I may not use the associates degree for the field it is in, but it opens up tons of opportunities, JUST BECAUSE I TOOK THE TIME TO GET THE DEGREE.

What did you think of "new light"?

"New Light™"?!!! Can you say preplanned obsolescence? They know what the hell they are doing. Just as manufacturers make their products to wear out over time (or come with "new features" so you will buy a new one), so too does the WT Publishing Company. If there was no more New Light ™ , then there would be no need for the dubs to buy more literature (except to replace books that are being studied for the fourth time!... can you say REVELATION CLIMAX!) and make more donations.
I used to get so excited when the conventions would release new books...now...not so much. Did you notice that both the Insight book and the Proclaimers book came out before the voluntary donation arrangement? Hmmmmmm...why would that be? I remember there was a stampede for those books. (Another story for another day and thread)
Now, the "New Light™" comes in paperback (or cheap plastic covers on the bound volumes). Do you know why? Because paperback wears out faster and is cheaper to produce....meaning more orders to replace the same stuff and (hopefully in the Borg's collective corporate mind) more donations from the R&F.
I once heard it said by a CO (who was being honest with me in a private converstation) that the WTrash magazine recycles its
New Light ™CRAP (Come Read About Paradise) every 7 years. Now, I think it is more often because there are so many new gullible dubs to feed this CRAP to and reinforce it in the minds of the existing R&F. Some are outright reruns of old books masquerading as New Light ™ (ie, Daniel book, Revelation book), some are just new bible study books (ie, something? replaced by Truth book replaced by Live Forever replaced by Knowledge book replaced by Bible Teach book) or Make Sure book replaced by Reasoning book, etc. SSDD in my opinion.I dread going to meetings and assemblies but keep going to some to keep up appearances for now. I have not been out in FS since Dec because I can no longer in good conscience be a New Light ™ Publisher anymore, distributing that CRAP and then coming around and around again to peddle that CRAP. I just want to puke thinking about it....where is that emoticon...oh yea...here it is

encouragedstalked if you want to maintain contact with family. You are fortunate that you have family that has common sense that has not been Borgified and still talks to you. Good for them!I too live in the area where I have been in the "Truth" most of my life...I live in one congos territory, but go to another congo in another circuit about 20-40 min away. Family is not the problem. Many of my friends live near me and are "very very worried." They know that I miss a lot of meetings (I go to Sunday and some TMS/SM, but not tonight ). Word about my not going in formal ministry is not yet seeping into their dub-addled minds yet....when that realization hits fully, then I expect the accelerated "Encouraging" (aka stalking) to start. Since my family is not in this area, I am looking at moving out of state (about 8 hours away) for a possible job promotion, but I am getting flack about that ("you'll get weaker spiritually"....yeah...ok... or "stay and get on your feet spiritually"....isnt that what I am doing by fading...but I digress)
gabriella... as a former elder, I kinda know how to play this game to keep the locals off my back. (but for how long I dont know) You have 2 choices:
option 1: The first is not really doable if you want family contact: get in their faces and tell em where to go (and be prepared to be d/f or d/a in absentia..this was becoming common while I was an elder not that long ago)
choice 2 (and the preferable option):always answer the door and be polite (but dont invite them in unless YOU invited THEM) and be real general about why you arent at the KH....(job, depression, etc as others have said)
If the BOE gets to asking too many nosy questions, ask them if they know the "411 Scripture"? When they say no, tell them to read 1 Thessalonians 4:11 and wish them a nice day as you slowly close the door -- with a wry yet regrettable smile on your face. Try not to laugh until they are gone. And remember this: there are some rare elders (like I was, not bragging, I promise) who really did care and did not think of the "encouragement" visits as "stalking". We were genuinely concerned if we did not see someone. It wasnt about "numbers" with us, it was about looking out after our fellow human beings. Try not to be too hard on the genuine ones.
Not much help probably, just my 2 cents worth from snake...

Blondie...it was really really really hard to not laugh during the WT study Sunday "meditating" on your comments. Thank you again for a good laugh (and real food for thought). I tried to distract myself by reading the latest rags from the lit counter....so sad the "life experiences" of those who wasted decades of their life peddling this crapola in the foreign field. Who knows how many doctors there may have been if they had gone to med school instead of Gilead. (any more to this comment and it could be defined as "Thread hijacking"... ha!)

Thanks blondie for your comments on the WT. Since I found out about them I look for them. Your comments are much more interesting than what is in the WTrash Magazine itself and the stuff coming out of the R&F Borg-followers as they re-read the paragraphs.
The sad thing? I have to go to the Talk and WT study tomorrow morning and sit through this drivel. I am basically down to the Sunday meetings.. but go to the TMS/SM from time to time. Gotta hear the "announcements"... phooey. Gotta "keep up appearances".....for now.

crazyblondeb: stuff? how about remodeling KH's that dont need it. In one specific instance, they were only going to replace the roof (design flaw..it was from one of the original non-standard Borg designs...) before it started leaking as another area KH had. then someone left a boatload of money when they died (between $25-100K...dont want to get to specific) and all of a sudden...the RBC (regional building committee) said "go ahead and put your wants on the list of needs and we will do it all at once." How about... spend the money on what is necessary and either stash it in local savings? or do what the dub's will said: send any left over money to specifc KH named in the will?
Oh...thats right..no money left to share with those congs SHE specified to help them pay off their 3.5% loans......(our loans were paid off) WE need to redecorate! How selfish. I wonder if the dead dub's lawyer knows about that...oh..thats right...she trusted a local elder to be her Executor instead of a worldly lawyer....kinda like the wolf guarding the henhouse..doncha think?
as a side note...I had been the LBC chairman (Local Build Committee) on that project. I purposefully drug my feet for over a year to buy as much time for the roof as I could...so far still no movement in that KH on a remodel date... Then I found out one night with the rest of the R&F about the windfall check. The PO ambushed me. As soon as he came off the platform, I pointed my finger at him and then the library and said "NOW!" During the service meeting I proceeded to rip the PO a new a$$ for going behind my back. How dare he tell everyone else before he tells the chairman? I told him the BOE was meeting after the service meeting.....and at that meeting I told the rest of the BOE that the PO was now LBC chairman. That was the beginning of the end for me as an elder....
That's OK...I know from auditing the records in my old congo that very little went to WWW (never enough to cover the WTrash let alone the books, etc) or KH fund....
Which is why the Borg now sends "Suggested Donation" Letters to the local BOEs for CO health insurance and cars leases, etc. They would never get enough to cover that if they had to rely on the WWW fund. And the CO and DO submits expenses to the local congos....those are almost always rubber stamped. (Only once did I see a local BOE say no to something outrageous...sorry cant get that specific now). And if the CO is at a poor congo, he is encouraged to save the larger "out of the ordinary" expenses until he gets to the well off congos...and the local R&F consider it ssssuch a privilege..... phooey...they buy that B$. Even though I was a good dub elder and pioneer, I never bought that crap. I scrutinized every receipt for waste. I tried to be reasonable...since the CO makes their own "sacrifice" for the Borg. I even feel bad for some. One CO
I am out of that KH now... and moved to another KH where...guess what? that's right....a major remodel...instead of just fixing the peeling wallpaper, etc.....oh, no...this sounds like a complete (and unnecessary) gut job. NOT one penny from the Snake! Not one thin dime... no sssssir!
There were other things (stuff) too...I cant be more specific, but the last thing before I moved was nearly $10,000 worth of expenditures. Why they needed to spend money for top of the line when less money for something without all the bells and whistles would would have been good enough I dont know.
I cant stand the waste of money by the borg and by the borg's spawn.

So I wanted everyone's opinion on something. Don't know if it has come up before or not. Still being an active but fading dub I still have to get literature and magazines from the counter at the KH. I have not put a dime in the WWW box in years. I used to donate to the local box for utilities, etc (only fair I thought, I crap in their toilet and use their TP at the KH) until I became an elder and as secretary had to review the accounts. When I seen how so much money was being wasted on stupid or unnecessary stuff I quit putting in for that. (The R&F did not know in my last KH what the individual expenses were because they lumped it on the accounts sheet as "Monthly Expenses")
For a long time I did not donate because as a poor pioneer, I really did not have the money. Now, I have the money (not pioneering..see the correlation), but only want to donate to worthwhile charities. (Room to Read..a literacy program for kids worldwide http://www.roomtoread.org/ as an example of my favorite..hope that plug is OK).
I still get the Borgs CDs, DVDs, bound volumes with the plastic covers (including the new midget Awake! bound volume). I pick up enough magazines for myself, another couple that are inactive and fading (although I think they still believe but are doubting and stumbled) and a couple more WTRags for the shredder so I can justify my fake field service report with a couple of mags, a few hours and an RV or two from informal witlessing.
So, the question is: Is it stealing to take the lit without donating? Or should the WTBT$ pay ME to take it off their hands?
