being a secular humanist i do not believe in any god or organized religion, but as a poet i am fascinated by all the languages and metaphors human beings have created over the centuries to understand and explain the mysteries of life and nature.

very interesting article, and while I had not been thinking God as a metaphor, I like it.

Having been raised a dub, now fading, you can imagine that I now have conflicting thoughts. Maybe I will be agnostic...I believe (and I may have commented on this before) that because of the complexity of everything and everyone around us, there must be some Higher Intelligence. But I do not believe that the HI insists that we puny humans (concocted by this HI) worship it. Maybe it is paying us attention, maybe not. Maybe it put us here and has moved on. Am I appreciative of being here? Usually.

Humans created the concept of god. My question is : Why?

yep changeling...I think the answer to the "Why" part of the question is that god (not always neatly) ties up all the loose ends of all of our questions about how things got here and why things are the way they are. The problem comes when you have 6 billion humans with their own theory of the answers about who/what God is. This group of humans believes it is God, this one Jesus, this one Jehovah, this one Allah, the Greeks and Romans had hundreds if not thousands....some cultures have millions of gods.

Religion just packages God for different groups of humans...customized for our personal set of tastes....The problem with the Borg (and many organized religions) is that if we dont see it their way, then we are expected to hit the highway.

It seems to be us versus them in the concept of god/divine entity, etc. Probably why we have so many wars on the earth.... (not because of Satan, which is just another metaphor for evil...or maybe just a way for humans to blame something/someone other than themselves for the messes we (collectively) make.

Oh how I understand that.....

Although never married, I was... until recently ...engaged. I was supposed to have been married now, with a beautiful wife and beautiful stepdaughter....Instead, she dumped me because she had "issues" (with herself not me, so she said).... (long story for a different thread). So, here I am, 10 months later...empty bed (and a brand new bed at that)....wishing someone was there next to me. But for now such will have to wait for the right gal for me.....

If your studies are going well, keep up with them because they are occupying your time. As for work, I dont know if you said what you do for a living....well we all have to work. I will be off to it in a little while (I took yesterday off, just because I did not feel like working...my work is flexible like that).....work and school....but I like the idea of doing some volunteer work....real volunteer work, not the Borg type.

I always enjoy your posts (and they cant all be light and fluffy). Although I am not glad for your current situation, I am glad to know you are human like the rest of us. I bet..if you want... you find a nice guy one day soon. The nice girls dont stay on the market long...

Glad you got your ticket to TX...maybe I will get the chance to come down for my first Apostafest and meet you and the others!

anyone try the new funky keyboard layout that most keyboard manufacturers are selling now?

the one where the delete key is tall, the home and end keys are moved next to each other and and the arrow keys are moved to the left under the shift key.. .

i recently bought the logitech 510 (the one shown on the bottom) and i absolutely hate it.. years ago i learned how to touch-type, which means i type without actually looking at the keyboard.

My keyboard is even weirder though because it's the split natural one.

That is what I am typing on right now. When I was taking college classes, my typing speed dropped by 10-15 wpm (from about 75 to 60) because I am used to using a Natural (split) keyboard and almost every keyboard at school was a standard. Going back and forth between the two was a pain (sometimes literally). Same at my PT job where I type...standard....ugh

When I was in Germany last year, I was using the hotel internet connection to IM and email my then fiancee. I am a touch typist and not a bad one either. I could not figure out why I was misspelling words and putting the letter z into places when I was never typing a z. Then I realized that the German keyboard was, as is the English keyboard, customized for the frequency of the letters used in the language...and the letter z is used often in German...thus in a more prominent place. I was more careful after that. After a few days of that, I got home and had to relearn the English QWERTY board again...

i thought that elders were idiots.

i have only ever known one who has ever had any real education, a solicitor and he was an arrogant twonk, the rest were a pathetic bunch of bullies who 'appeared' to be loving and kind but were infact out to find out the shit about everyone and cause as much trouble for everyone as possible.

Elders ARE idiots!!

this has always been my opinion, even as a 'loyal' jw!

i thought that elders were idiots.

i have only ever known one who has ever had any real education, a solicitor and he was an arrogant twonk, the rest were a pathetic bunch of bullies who 'appeared' to be loving and kind but were infact out to find out the shit about everyone and cause as much trouble for everyone as possible.

yeah me too... elder in my last congo, I pass his workplace on a regular basis...see his truck parked out front... daydream about blowing it up and blaming it on an "industrial accident"...

In my last congo, the PO left back to his old congo, another stepped aside, then another....they and I, the 4 of us, held our own against the other 3 (with one elderly brother that could be swayed..he has since died)....but after they all left/came off, I was left alone to try to point out wrongs.....I was burning out long before I gave them ammo to pull the trigger on my elder responsibilities....

ok Gill, this reply may get long, or be several replies...as I ...until recently... served as an elder.

Most elders I know ARE idiots. A few are kind and try to do what is right (not Borg right) but are like salmon swimming up stream. I always was swimming upstream.

Did you enjoy being called a 'star of the Congregation?' Did it boost your ego? Did you enjoy being able to run Judicial committes, better known as Kangaroo courts?

"Star"... no...."ego boost"... hell no....enjoy JC's...hell NO ..I was chairman of a couple JC's, and I insisted that the other elders look over not only the elder book but also the WT article a few years back about "Wickedness or Weakness" and emphasized to them that no decision or mindset was to be made in advance (saying this was like pissing in a headwind). I had served on too many JC's where the elders had basically already tried and convicted the accused, the only thing to decide was "announced reproof", "unannounced reproof" or D/F....I would not stand for that. I hated serving on JC's, but was convinced, until a year or so ago, that we were doing what was best for the congo by "keeping the congo clean"...yeah... OK... Who was I (or any elder) to decide if a person was really "repentant" or not. Can I read hearts...no. I don't know how anyone could sit in front of a JC and confess their darkest "issues" (I refuse to call them sins now). I would never knowingly sit in front of a JC and tell them sh*t.

I once, years ago, was (unknowingly) on the other end of a JC ..(I had been accused of lying.....really it was jealous pioneers making trouble, as it was found out later...)...at the time I was not told it was a JC...ended up losing MS/reg pio titles....(wont call them privileges)...it was, as you say, a "kangaroo court", with the outcome and witnesses predetermined.....announced not having MS/reg pio anymore, but unannounced reproof, only "restriction" was not offering prayer for a month before they lifted the restriction....just enough to be JC and keep me off as MS for 3 years.

After that experience, I swore if I was ever appointed as an elder, I would always treat the accused with dignity (well, as much as can be had in such a bogus court) and give them a chance and let them know what their rights (limited as they were) were...I hope I always did that.

I hope I was kind...but I know at times I came across as self-righteous and I never intended that. It makes me sad to think I ever hurt anyone as an elder, but I know I did.
