What's the BEST thing about being "out" of the "truth"?
by B_Deserter infor me, it's having friends that i don't have to hide my lack of meeting attendance/service from.
it's amazing how they teach you that only jws can be your real friends, but in reality, it's all contingent upon your religious "performance.
" sure, if you're not going to meetings, they'll try to be "friends," by encouraging you to go back.

GIVE ME YOUR INFORMED OPINION........
by Terry inas you well know, the chief difference between the left (democrats/liberals) and the right (republicans/conservatives) comes down to one thing.. the size of government and the role of government.. with that in mind i ask for your informed opinion.. 1.what does government do that isn't wasteful, inept and costly that the private sector can't do better?.
2.why do people disagree on the role of government when there are thousands of examples of where government fails to provide?.
3.do you think government automatically becomes efficient, orderly and manageable when your preferred party takes office?.

Hi Terry,
I always enjoy your posts. This conversation about government reminds me of Winston Churchill when he said:
Democracy is a bad form of government....unfortunately it's the best thing we've got.
I am jammin' at school right now, but will post a more thoughtful comment later.
Cheers,
Alex

Spiritual food = Dub grub....whadayathink???
by Alpaca ini coined this the other day on another thread and it seemed to get a laugh out of a few people.. and since were talking about it, what other great terms could we come up with in the spirit of "the borg," the filthful and disgraceful slavebugger (a fave of mine)......??

WA,
No.....I was using Dub Grub to refer to the shit the BORG leadership attempts to deliver as "spiritual food."
Although, I do know what you are talking about with the food -- junk snacks and field circus breakfast breaks.

Is the GB crooked or just misguided?
by easyreader1970 ini ask myself this from time to time.
is the governing body operating seriously out of the belief that they are god's only channel to mankind?
or are they deliberately scamming people?

What's Your MAIN Reason For Not Believing In "The Truth"?
by minimus inmy mother had this discussion yesterday.
basically, my main argument was that if the fds gets jehovah's holy spirit and their "food" is "the truth", yet they always are correcting themselves, how can anyone in all fairness believe it's "the truth"??
you can't show scripturally why organ transplants are a form of cannibalism and clearly a disfellowshipping offense and a couple of years later after possible disfellowshippings or death, and then believe jehovah god changed his view suddenly.

By the way, have you guys seen this quote? Can't remember where I saw it or said it, but it is great.
Trust those who are searching for the truth, mistrust those who have found it!!!!

I'm having a crisis of decision on my masters major. Help!!
by White Dove ini've heard some pretty nasty things about the social work field, such as little benefits, low pay, no respect, inefectiveness, undertrained supervisors, etc.
now i worry if i'm getting into the wrong field.
i want to be in a helping field but need money and benefits.

WD,
I think the things you've heard probably have some foundation to them. On the other hand, that doesn't preclude finding a rewarding outlet for doing social work.
Also, you are still young enough that you might want to explore doing a gig in the Peace Corps after you are finished with school.
The other thing to do is to talk with as many people as possible in the prospective field to get their feedback.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Wordless World
by hamilcarr ini don't mean a world without any language or communication, but a world in which words are taken for what they really are, namely human constructions, and not as the foundations of supertheories.
i think we've all been seeking for words without really defining them, such as 'truth', 'beauty', 'happiness', etc.
hence, the realisation of these pursuits can make us happy or desperate.

Language is so interesting. I took 2 years of classical Greek a few years ago to fulfill my foreign language requirement for my degree. It was fascinating to learn that there are single words in another language that would take a full sentence to express in English.
Different languages have different strengths and weaknesses. Some are very colloquial (I've been told that Norweigan is that wasy, and English definitely is), which is a challenge for non-native speakers to fully grasp the nuances of meaning that lie beyond the actual words. Other languages are extremely literal and precise.
lnterestingly, it is the ambiguity in English that makes it such a rich source of humor.
Good thread....thanks!
