Good point, jnat. Just since yesterday, my hubby and I have been searching high and low for info on an antique tool he received from his father. So far we are coming up with zero. We may have to make a trek to an old-fashioned library with real books!

Facebook and 'Electronic Telepathy'
by metatron inhttp://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110111/ap_on_hi_te/af_tunisia_riots_4.
facebook just overthrew the government of tunisia, apparently.
young minds merged together via wireless broadband in a manner that's never happened before - especially as regards the element of time.

And what has helped to break the barrier of fear that kept Tunisian anger bottled up for so long? Social networks like Facebook, which have helped organize protests and fuel online rage across this North African nation.
Why do you think governments, especially ours (US), are talking more and more about control of the internet and talk radio. They would love nothing better than to be able to just "pull the plug" whenever they want to. -

So an 8 year old is killed by a machine-gun and it's no ones fault?
by Simon ini think us gun laws are s-t-u-p-i-d ... and the legal system more so.
saw a very good suggestion yesterday though - force people who want to own a gun to require insurance (hey, you have to have it for a vehicle for gods sake).
single-shot hunting rifle?

First, restrict the number of cartridges to three so the weapon doesn't fly out of control. Second, put an adult hand over the receiver to
keep it from lurching up too high.
Good advice, villa. I'm sure he will relive the "should'a could'as" till the day he dies. So so sad.

An 8 year old child is dead and he didn't make the gun himself. Someone loaded it. Someone handed it to him.
Exactly, Simon. I couldn't agree more. That gun even jammed prior to him shooting it from what I understand. 8 yrs. old is too young to shoot this kind of weapon. A .22 or a 20-gauge shotgun at the most for an 8-yr. old, and then with strict supervision. -

I should have added a "winkie" emoticon to my comment about her being blunt. I wasn't saying it to be critical, but rather tongue in cheek.

I read this and was absolutely appalled that this 8-yr. old was allowed to shoot a Uzi. Where is the common sense of this father?! I am not an advocate of strict gun control, but I AM an advocate of parents using common sense. My sons got their first guns at the age of 14 and were taught all the safety rules and to this day have an extremely healthy respect for weapons.

Beks, you know books. Do you remember a sci-fi book from decades ago by Isaac Asimov about a society that had evolved into one that stayed individually in isolation and their communication was only done electronically? I can't remember the name of it. But, sometimes I think that is where we are headed.
More and more executives and management level employees are working out of home offices and communicating electronically. Business meetings are virtual and conversations are done via email or phone. In a way, I love it. I sometimes talk to my family members via skype and though it's not perfect, it's not bad.

I think this is detrimental to society
I agree. But, I have also had conversations with people that say this is how we are evolving. Facebook, social and dating websites, email, texting, cell, skype, and any number of virtual communications are the "new wave". When I have voiced concern that social skills are deteriorating because of it, I have been told that kids now will implement their own way of socializing and it will be THEIR CHOICE. I take these innovations to heart, but I still tend to be old-fashioned in so many respects.
