for those of us who left organized religion, how does it make you feel when a xtian says they will pray for you because you don't believe the same as they do?
personally, in my opinion, that is a very obnoxious statement, especially if i don't ask or want someone to pray for me.
to me, that's saying that i am wrong and they are right, and they are praying to god that i will see things their way.
You could always respond: "and I'll apply logic and science for all of us."

well, now that my wife michalina is 20 weeks pregnant with our first girl (or child i should say), isabelle rose, people who have treated us like we are dead for the last 15 months are coming out, pretending to be our friends all of sudden.
even people we considered friends when we were in pa who have basically shunned us want in our lives now - of course - we are having a baby!
this religion and people within it never cease to amaze me.
The standard Witness blab is along the lines of:
"Oh look Dim and Mrs. Dim are having a baby. You know, the responsibilities of a child often make people really think about the terrible world we're living in! Perhaps they'll be more receptive to The Truth now. We should encourage them."
In other words, they'll try and use any stresses and uncertainties that arise from your new circumstances, as tools to leverage you back into the cult. Don't kid yourselves (I'm sure you're not) that these people actually have any genuine concern or human feelings for you.

i posted this on another discussion board a few weeks ago, but thought i would recycle it here.
there are hundreds of movies made each year which are entertaining, but very few which have any real depth of value.
i believe that the grey zone is one of those few.. i just watched the movie called the grey zone.
I posted this on another discussion board a few weeks ago, but thought I would recycle it here. There are hundreds of movies made each year which are entertaining, but very few which have any real depth of value. I believe that The Grey Zone is one of those few.
I just watched the movie called The Grey Zone.
It is an extremely well-made movie. Because of that, and because of the subject matter, it is also a very difficult movie to watch.
The movie is based upon true events: the uprising in Auschwitz Birkenau in 1944 of the sonderkommando .
The sonderkommando were Jewish prisoners in Auschwitz that the SS conscripted into servicing the mass extermination of around three million Jews. In return for this, they were given privileges such as decent food, straw mattresses and regular clothing.
Their tasks included stripping the victims while telling them that they were going into a delousing shower before being reunited with their families. In fact, they were going to the gas chambers. Other sonderkommando would clean out the gas chambers and process the bodies, removing gold fillings, feeding the corpses into the furnaces, and dumping the ashes afterwards.
Despite all this, they would only get approximately an additional four months to live. The Nazis regularly executed sonderkommando units in order to prevent anyone living to give evidence of the atrocities. Despite this, some sonderkommando did survive when the Russians liberated Poland.
Only once did the sonderkommando rebel, in 1944, destroying one of the four crematoria. But the uprising was quickly put down. The destroyed crematorium, however, was never rebuilt.
The Grey Zone tells the story of the uprising, based upon a Jewish doctor's eyewitness memories. It is a very realistic protrayal of Auschwitz, not shying away from the realities of what happened there. Some scenes are quite simply harrowing, showing the gas chambers and crematoria in action, the mass executions of prisoners by simply lining them up and shooting them in the back of the head, and the torture of victims. Some scenes make the bile rise without any violence: the sonderkommando orchestra playing an upbeat waltz to calm the thousands of men, women and children lining up for the "shower"; the elderly man forced to push his own wife, daughter and grandchildren into the furnaces.
I can't recommend the movie, it's simply not the kind of movie about which you can say "great movie! You must see it!" It's stark and disturbing.
But, if you are feeling emotionally strong, The Grey Zone will provide you with a strong lesson in why we must never forget history, and why free nations must always stand up to psychopathic dictators.

i went on my date this afternoon.
he is a nice guy.
looks like clint eastwood.
Robyn:
How's it going, girlfriend? Sorry, couldn't resist. But seriously, I wouldn't be too uptight about that. It was said in front of another guy, and was (a) a good way of warning him off from horning in and (b) a good way of preserving and enhancing some guy-cred (aren't men deeeeep?)
As for the beer, how much is a lot? Are we talking a few pints, or did the restaurant have a Budweiser tanker pulled up outside? From experience, guys tend to drink quite a lot on first dates because we're nervous as hell too, and there's nothing like taking a drink of something to cover pauses in the conversation.
The lack of intellectual conversation? Um...well....he is male, you know! This could be a problem, but then again, maybe he's thinking the same about you, hey? Perhaps after a few more dates, when things aren't so tense, you'll both loosen up enough to start really talking about your respective intellectual interests. It's a bit tough for a guy on a first date to admit that he enjoys Puccini, especially when there's a rival sniffing around.
Best of luck with the next date!

my ex husband just told me that he will continue to facilitate visitation between my child and my jw family who is shunning me (see my other thread "i didn't think they could find another way to hurt me but...") he says i'm the one with the problem and that i should be "ashamed of myself".
it's not like i thought he'd cooperate, but for him to stand there and tell me that he will allow my sister full access to my child and there's not a damn thing i can do (and probably, legally, that's right) makes my blood boil.
makes me just want to swallow every fricking pill in the house.
Essie:
Even though you think there is nothing you can do legally, it's still a good idea to at least talk to a family lawyer. He/she may have some good ideas about how to proceed. Cases have been awarded against the JW's because the judge recognised that the mental/emotional welfare of the child supercedes the religious rights of the JW family. Your daughter testifying that being exposed to Watchtower teachings and practices (such as shunning) seriously upsets and confuses her would weigh heavily with a judge.
Secondly, from what you've written, you have very good communication with your daughter. Even if she continues to see the JW family, this does not mean she will be assimilated. You are smart, she is smart. If you take some time to prepare her beforehand for the JW cult techniques, she is unlikely to fall for them.
Please keep us up to date on this.
