Dutch Bethel responds to NGO case
by Merlin ini wanted to share with you a response by dutch bethel on a letter sent by dutch jw re: the ngo thing.. i've not been able to keep up with all the posts on this subject here, so i might end up saying this already said, but never mind that.. thing is, dutch bethel confirmed the ngo status, justifying it by referring to romans 13:1. .
quote from the letter (translated) : <i>"jehovah's witnesses view the organisation of the united nations in the same way they view the other governments of this world ... considering the un as one of the 'superior authorities' is a help to understanding that it is possible to have certain contacts with this institution, similar to the society having contact with ministries taking care of matters related to justice, education and the like"</i> .
as for sharing the ideals of the un charter, it was said : <i>"it is not that hard to only share ideals, while we of course pay tribute to the biblical view on the way in which they should be achieved"</i> (i couldn't help noticing the shocking similarity to the society's letter to hitler in this line of reasoning...).

I agree...it says right on the UN's site that the NGOs agree to support the UN...not just share some ideas.
Either you is, or either you isn't. If they realized that they are making a mistake they should just say it and get out of the NGO.
Bottomline, the WT wants to use the help and resources of the UN without ever having to live up to its end of the bargain. To me that is false pretenses.

English,
Thanks for the info. I just emailed Stephen this afternoon asking if he could let us know if there were going to be any updates.
I am not familiar with English newspapers. Is it safe to assume that The Guardian is a reputable newspaper? It looked like it was from the various, well written articles on the site.

I doubt very much the Property and Casualty claim.
I would like to see an official answer from the Watchtower, see what the spin will be.If they are investing money in some sort of annuity plan for the witnesses that volunteer there, then being listed as a charitable annuity society makes perfect sense.
The only way that this bothers me is that the WT always claims to be different from other religions. Well, there are plenty of religions that take care of the people that devote their life to the religion with pensions, etc. There is nothing wrong with that. It is the high and mighty tone they take that annoys me.

Time-Consuming Side Issues
by comment incheck out this paragraph from the article "serve jehovah without distraction" in the april 1994 kingdom ministry:.
time-consuming side issues: some have got caught up in efforts to resolve common problems in modern society.
christians need to avoid becoming involved in the worlds endless debates over social issues or its futile struggles to correct injustices.

Ack!!!!
Basically, don't stand up for ANY rights unless they affect the ability of witnesses to practice thier religion. Who gives a damn about anyone else's right.Nice...sheesh!!

This has to do with annuities, which are actually back by life insurance. The society is not an insurance company, but it looks like they offer some kind of annuity program, which many educational and religious organizations do. That is why they are under Charitable Annuity Societies.
They line may seem fine to some, but you cannot consider these organizations listed to be like a Metropolitian or Prudential, etc. They are all just regulated by the Insurance Department.
I have never heard about this before. Do they have annuities for the GB or something? I have never heard about any Bethelites getting a pension or anything. Can anyone elaborate? It would be great if they did offer that to those that work for years for them in an otherwise unpaid work.
