i feel like screaming right about now...........the dickhead who takes our bookstudy group just came over and said "...i wonder how many brothers and sisters died in the tsunami disater.
" while that's a natural concern, his next comment blew me away "....it figures that the media hasn't bothered mentioning jehovah's witnesses helping out in this disaster!
" i looked at him stunned for a minute and said "and why on earth would they mention jehovah's witnesses?
ahhh I dunno...I have to say that most of the witnesses I knew didn't have a bad attitude about this kind of thing. Of course they wondered how many of the JWs were in a disaster...to the very faithful, it is like wondering how many of your extended family is in trouble.
I think it is right to tell the congregations what they are doing, but ludicrious to think that they are doing all they can. If they spend the same percentage of the Watchtower wealth on helping those in need that the big "evil" Catholic church does, then maybe they can toot their horn some. I am not a huge fan of the Catholic faith, but they know how to give; I am not referring to the work their missionaries do to try to lure new recruits, but they throw money all over the world.
If I can afford to give any money to this effort, it will probably be sent to the Red Cross or CARE.
...on the phone.
should i have told her that "satan is the god of good and bad luck"?
hehe.
My mother would have to be drunk and high at the same time to say "good luck". Not that she would ever get drunk or high, heh heh.
i always wanted to re-read the bible after i left the org; to be able to read it without having to feel like i had to apply something, or to have to read it out of obedience, etc.... well, i have always liked the new world translation, i know it isn't perfect, but i think it is better than some.
but i have always wanted to get a different modern english translation, and read that.
well, i finally picked up a new international version at wal-mart the other day...under $6, what a bargain.. started last night, and finished genesis today, and am just starting into exodous.
Okay...I figured out my user issues...and i am reposted my response so people can actually READ IT!! Sorry about that!
Candidlynuts -"and read revelation while reading those left behind books.. (which made about as much sense as the revelation book lol)" Actually, I have read a couple of them, I enjoy them, but sometimes the preaching in it gets to be a bit much. =)
German- I have tried to read LOTR books, but ack...cannot get through them. ( I know that makes me a bad person...but I loved the movies!) Don't know what the Silmarillion is, will have to look it up
ApagaLaLuz- I want to read the Koran next, and some day the book of Mormon..
willyloman- this is what I am finding. I am still just in Exodus, but the NIV bible seems so much less complicated.
startingover- "Try reading the bible without the preconceived idea that it's the word of god." That is EXACTLY how I am reading it. I believe the bible is man's way to explain life and God, not God using man to explain it.
joannadandy-"It was also neat to finally sit down with people of obviously different religious backgrounds - not just JW's repeating the same exact things they all said the last time we read a certain passage." See, that is what I would like to do. Just explore it from different points of view...like you would any other book. You are probably right, face to face is probably best, but right now I don't know if I could find the time.
Golf- sounds like that was an interesting book...I have met quite a few people that agrees with that lady. But never heard anyone use a bible verse to support it. I don't think it would help her case much, since the US has a separation between church and state. But very interesting.
ColdRedRain- "And actually, I've read the Bible too, without "Study aids". It is truly a book of absurdities, inconsistancies and outright offensiveness. It makes me understand groups lke the LDS and the Islam faith a bit more, since they both base their teachings on that same book that encourages racism, sexism and mutilation." True, absolutely. I personally wanted to smack Jacob for having so many wives, and for poor Leah getting the short end of things. Who wants to be the wife that is loved less? But, again, for me, this is reading anciet stories written by men.
Reading the bible for me now is more of a cross between the joy of reading, and a bit of an anthropological (if that isn't a word, it is now) adventure. I am still searching to find some online groups or something to read with. I have yet to find one that is not Christian based. And no offense to the Christians out there, but I want more than just Christians to communicate with. If anyone has any suggestions, they are welcome

My mom took the all of the meetings, and studying for them so seriously, and so did I as a kid...so that meant doing the weekly bible reading etc.....but she was very serious when she was a babtist too before her conversion...even went to bible college.
when i was a teenager, i had it bad for a brother.
it used to kill me, because we liked the same stuff, but he was on the spiritual track, headed for bethel, and i refused to get baptized.
we used to argue while we were out in service, and we had a real love/hate relationship.
yAYYYYYY!!!!!
I hope it goes well

Started last night, and finished Genesis today, and am just starting into Exodous. I have to say, it doesn't seem to take as long, because I am just reading it as I would any other book. I am rather enjoying it. I do dread Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy..uck...hahah
Now that I a reading the bible WITHOUT any "bible aid", I find myself asking a few questions. This made me think that it would be kind of fun to join a Bible book club...online of course...who has the time for anything else.
Is this something that anyone would be interested in?
Anyhoo... I was wondering how many others out there decided to do this after they left the Kingdom Hall too?

houston -- a father of three children in the houston area has gone from playing santa claus to playing the grinch.. .
I have to tell you, there have been a few times this past month that I was ready to bring back my kids toys and just put a little box with coal under the tree.
Hey, its better than beating your kids if they really needed to be taught a lesson. And I agree, it probably makes the kids think twice.
was reading the older posts and noticed a christmas display with smurfs, why don't jw's like smurfs?
i guess i wasn't informed about that one.
I was at a circuit assembly when I was maybe 12 or 13 years old, and in an actual talk at this assembly an elder brought up the dangers of ignoring the warnings of staying away from demonic things, no matter how cute a toy ect...anyhoo, he related a story about a sister that had a smurf pin that she wore to a kingdom hall. And of course, during the metting it sprang to life, screamed and jumped off the sister and ran out of the kingdom hall.
Jeez loueeezzz....I have to tell you that I had heard stories like this from other witnesses, but to hear it from the stage during an assembly gave me the creeps. So, my mom and I took it pretty seriously, because if it was heard at an assembly, it couldn't be gossip, right?? see me roll my eyes hahaah.....
