Only in America....?

much said here recently re the world at large and how it views the us - not too favorably overall - however - must make this point - president bush has just announced his intention to have as secretary of state condoleeza rice - now for me that is amazing and a credit to the american system - she is from a poor, black american background, was rejected years ago in the south by the democrats - yet by hard work she has risen to the very top - cant see that happening in similar circumstances here in the uk - clearly one difference between us is that hard work can get rewarded in the us.

a further note - seeing president bush introduce her when announcing his intention to put her nomination forward, i for one was struck by his apparent absolute admiration for this lady, for once he had no smirk as she spoke, rather he looked on her with evident pride and respect.

not a fan of gw but must give him marks here for his positive discrimination in favor of talent regardless of background, ethnicity or whatever.

Powell has said in the past that he wouldn't run, because he didn't want the intrusion into his family's private life.

I have a lot of respect for Rice and Powell. Although I don't agree with her on some things, she really has had a lot dumped on her, and has shown a lot of poise. It is tough for a woman to be taken seriously in politics in a lot of countries without people thinking they are just a total witch. I have read a few interviews with her, the best with in the O magazine when Oprah Winfrey interviewed her.

I just hope Bush will listen to her more than he did Powell. Bush had a lot of good people on his side, but he has lost many of them.

Bad news about the house. : /

i have been holding off making a public announcement for awhile because i have been waiting for all of the paperwork to become official... but the company that is building my house has been dragging their feet, trying to delay the inevitable.. the bottom line is this: i won't be able to buy the house.

when i was doing contract work, i was making x amount of money.

i had anticipated a pay cut caused by my becoming a permanent employee, but the pay cut turned out to be more substancial than i had anticipated.

I think you are being smart by passing on the house. Why buy the place if paying for it is going to give you an ulcer? This isn't just a financial issue, but a quality of life issue. Beautiful houses and beautiful things are nice, but if they don't give you a feeling of comfort and security, they may not be worth having.

My husband and I would like to buy the house we are currently renting...we have about 18 months to get things in order to do it before our landlord puts it on the open market. Doing what we can to get our things in order etc...I have been told by a few that if we went and tried to buy one of these new houses being built in new developments, we would have a better chance of getting financing sooner. But those houses, while absolutely stunning, are more than we feel comfortable paying for. We would rather play it a little safe with the home purchase. We have too many kids to risk buying something we could lose within a few months if my husband loses his job again.

I wouldn't take an extra job just to get the house, unless that is what you are comfortable with. Me, I would rather have time to enjoy the house, actual be in the house for more than just sleeping in it. What's the point of having a nice house if you cannot have the time to enjoy it?

We do like Top Ramen too...the best cheapo noodle on the market as far as my kids are concerned!

as scott peterson's mother exited the courthouse, where she heard the jury pronounce her son guilty of murder, the crowd moved in on her, jeered and booed her, and some spit at her.. scott certainly appears guilty and the jury who heard the evidence thought so.

i believe in the death penalty, but not in purely circumstantial cases like scott peterson's.

so, i favor life in prison, to give him opportunity either repent and pay his punishment, or to prove his innocence ... if he can.. however, to stand outside a court house to cheer at the verdict seems rather inane and ludricris.

That is just sick to spit on her. She also lost a grandchild. I can only imagine the torment he has put her and his father through.

oh come, on! Sure, I can take you blaming the US for various problems around the world like Iraq, etc no problem, that is just the way it is with different countries..but my god...the UK is your turf...if you guys cannot control yourselves, don't blame us.

Hey, I have nothing to be sorry for...I voted for Kerry...

Although Bush won again, this was an amazing election because it was the HIGHEST voter turn out in about 35 years.

What does this tell me? That more and more people are paying attention in this country. This is important because maybe it will mean that more people will be involved in their LOCAL communites now. That is where much of the real change happens, and goes from there.

Maybe the rest of the world doesn't care about that, and that's okay. The feeling in this country these past six months, how many people that actually CARE about what is going on in politics here is amazing.

I don't owe the world an apology, and neither does any other American that actually voted on November 2nd.

I am all for respecting nature and everything, but once a rodent steps their furry little paws on my turf, all bets are off.

Compromise

doing stuff you wouldn't ordinarily do... stuff you don't and wouldn't ever do by nature, but you do it because you're married to this particular person.

without it a marriage is, at best, an unhappy situation; at worst, a divorce waiting to happen.

Everyone has different things they are willing to compromise on. If you honestly don't have an real scrupples against it, I don't think it can hurt every now and then.

I have know sisters in the past where they had an "unbelieving mate" attend meetings some Sundays, and the Memorial, etc. I think if you made it clear that you are only going for them, that would be important.

I would ask her too, if I am willing to attend the Sunday meetings, for example, what do I get in return? It is lonely being a single sister, or a married person in the hall without a partner there. Maybe she just would like you to show your face every now and then so to remind the others at the hall (aka gossiping Elderette wives and self righteous pioneer sisters) that she is not a sad lonely woman that needs a man.

When I was about 22 and my youngest sister was 6 she asked me why I was in a bad mood one day.

I told her I had PMS.

She was quiet for a minute, and then looked at me and said" Does that mean Pretty Mean Sister?"
