I think the Japan comparission is slightly misleading. Following WWII, Japan experience a very rapid 'westernisation', which was really the 'in' that the Society used to get dozens of missionaries in. The same is not likely to be true of China and India.

FROM the source about downsizing
by Pistoff ini toured wallkill in the last month; the tour guide stated, in very clear terms, that the wt leadership is "sending home" many older couples and older ones, and replacing them with younger ones as they need to.
he did say it was because their experience was of more use in the field.
(snicker.

I agree - the Society still encourages young ones to make Bethel Service a career! -

The answer is no, I can't see it.
You have to realize that even in the USA where tha 'good news' has been preached for over 100 years, JWs are still a small minority and many people still no nothing about JWs.
I was an elder in India for a time. The majority of the success there is with converting other Christians to JWs. In place that are Hindu or Islam there is very little growth.

DC, all but gave directions to the JWD site
by ocsrf in.
i found the dc very interesting this year do to my reading of this site.
i took note that the danger of the internet was menitioned no less than three times, once with a demonstration showing a brother who found a site by a innocent search of the web on a jw subject to the very last talk, concluding remarks and final "resolution" that consisted of 10 items with number 10 staying away from dangerous sites and chat rooms.. makes you wonder what the real story is behind that much attention being given to this problem iof theirs.. oc

I agree with the overwhelming view that trying to suppress the internet will do more harm than good in the long run.
However, you have to remember that the rank and file divide up into different factions. You will have the 'die hards', those totally loyal to 100% of everything the society says without ever questioning. These are the sorts that perhaps do not have a tv in their homes and probably wouldn't tolerate the thought of have a computer connected to the internet. At the other end, you will have those with genuine questions, those who are more open minded and prepared to think for themselves. Once these have found the internet they will soon be lost. -

Ban cigarette production?
by greendawn ingiven that cigarettes are harmful to health why don't the governments shut down the factories producing them?
it's strange how they tolerate them but not marijuana.
smoking costs a lot of money to the health services of all countries, while the tobacco industries make their profits.

The problem with cigarettes is that even governments appear not to be able to spell out in words of one syllable exactly how dangerous cigarettes are.
Smoking Kills - exactly what does this mean? It means that 50 % (or 1 in every 2 people) of those who smoke will die of a smoking related illness.
Smoking causes early death. By how much? The average smoker will die 10 years sooner than the average non-smoker.
Can I state the dangers any more clearly? Every arguement for smoking ignores the basic truths I have stated. -

Do you think a nuclear weapon will be used in war or terrorism in our time?
by free2beme inwith all those nukes out there, and all the countries that have them or are making them.
do you think it is something we should expect, that in our lifetime a nuclear weapon will be used in war or an act of terrorism?
i personally think it is possible, and i think it would be the middle east that would see this happening.

I have to agree with Gregor; a "dirty bomb". At some point this is going to happen in New York, London, Paris, Madrid or Tel Aviv. A sign of the times perhaps?

Do you think that the elders DF'd or DA'd you because you knew to much?
by booker-t ini was reading about carl o jonsson and how the wts df'd him because he found out about the 586/607 contraversy.
i was wondering how many people are unfairly kicked out of the wts because they have some damaging info on the wts that could lead to a massive exodus.
i know when i found out about beth sarim the elders told me not to tell any other jw's about it.

Did you make life altering decisions because of 1975?
by restrangled ini had extended family members, both with families of 7, abandon good jobs and homes in the suburbs of chicago.
they moved to the wild outskirts of 2 separate states to protect their families from armageddon.
they both waited for 20 years, wound up financially destitute and finally had to move and depend on other family members to recover.. it would be interesting to read the stories from those of you who went through this time period as a jw.. r.

Yes. I think that, like all other young people 'in at the time', the decisions I made were based on the 'fact' the end was near.
