In the truth, happiness is equated with a stable family life, a hope for the future and working for the cause.
I still believe the same, just may be the cause isnt the same any more.

was it family, friends, the belief that this all was really true?
I was, and still am I guess, an idealist.
I would still like to live in a world where justice and truth prevails, and being honest and good is not considered to be a weakness. I believe that the New World Society could offer this. But sadly, like many here, I have been disillusioned by failed promises and the hypocrisy of many.

did you believe that you would be blessed by god by doing more in the organization?
did you see a relationship between being blessed by god and being active in the organization?
At one time I did equate loyalty with "blessings".
However, I was sadly disillusioned to learn that years of loyalty counted as nothing when you experience problems. Both the loyalty and "blessing" can soon be forgotten.
how many times were you in a congregation split?
i was in 1 in about my 10 yrs active as a jdub.
Never in 25 years. We have had some move in and some move out.
Overall, we are decreasing, so not likely to split.
i realise that i could well get shot down in flames here but it is my personal belief that the wbts will make a concerted effort to reinvent itself in the not too distant future.. i also believe that at this very moment they are working on ways to change the major doctrines that have become a millstone for them, without causing major problems and a mass exodus of the r&f.
as i see it they have to leave the vast majority of their teachings intact whilst removing or changing the problem ones.. by receiving some sort of new light on 607 b.c.e.
they would be able to change, or completely do away with, the significance of 1914. although this would need to be the ultimate aim i think it would be difficult to achieve without altering many of their current interpretations of scriptural prophesy.
Personally, I wouldnt get too excited about any imminent changes. I believe the 1914 doctrine is going to be a huge issue, but the same time, I cannot see how the hierarchy is going to put a spin on it.
See my thread on a very similar topic a couple of days ago. http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/forum/thread.aspx?id=43078&site=3
Some have suggested in this thread that the whole 1914 deal may be downgraded and that the rank and file will not notice it. This may wear in countries that have seen big increases in the past 10 years but in the USA, Europe and Australia, there has been little or zero new growth in the past 10 years. In our local congregation, most have been in all their lives, and cannot think of any recent new one. This means all the elders and all the older ones have been steeped in the 1914 doctrine for a very long time. It is going to be very difficult to sell any radical new light to these without a significant backlash.
my guess is that most young kids are bored sick at the meetings.
the light relief for them comes however, when their parents prod them in the ribs and give them an answer.
these usually consist of the jehovah, jesus, etc.
My guess is that most young kids are bored sick at the meetings. The light relief for them comes however, when their parents prod them in the ribs and give them an answer. These usually consist of the Jehovah, Jesus, etc. type answers.
But sometimes it appears that kids are used to answer the sort of questions that are simply an insult to an adults intelligence. For example, the question may be asked, what is Gods greatest quality? Now, we all know the one word answer. To a thinking Christian, there may be a lot that could be said in reply, perhaps something that is quite challenging regarding Gods love. However, in the average question and answer session, it is the one word answer that is required, then the conductor can quickly move on.
Kids are also used to answer the trickier doctrinal questions, such one from this weeks book study When and in what way did Babylon the Great undergo a fall? In this case it is easier to use the kids, their answers can be taken as fact, rather than have an adult try to present facts and reasons behind the stated answer.
The worst cases though are kids being used to answer during those discussions of taboo subjects, where the adults are too embarrassed. I have certainly heard youngsters answer on topics such as martial dues, etc.

though hopefully i am not planning on dying at the moment, but time and unforeseen circumstances can catch up with us all.. previously, i had an elder who is a gentle and kind person lined up to handle my memorial should the need arise.. however, now that i am no longer fully in as it were, i not sure what instructions i should give to my family should the worst arise.
i can hardly says what i really want is an anglican service or contact the local buddhists.. anyone else thought about this and come to any conclusions?

.
just a quick question...how many elders normally on a jc?
i thought three; but when i met with the elders there were two.. thanks,
By the Society's rules there must be at least 3, there may be more for "special circumstances", but no less.
I served as an elder for many years, including a time in a congregation where there were only a few elders. When there was an occasion were a judicial committee was required, I had to draft in elders from outside.
the service meeting tonight, centered on how jehovah god cares about numbers.
numbers are even recorded in the bible!
yes, numbers mean a lot to jehovah god.
If nothing else it was an interesting part!
A lot of emphasis was put on the "accurate" reporting. However, the only scripture that was read in the entire part was the one from Acts were "about 3,000" were baptised.
If the early Christians had have had the same mentality, Paul's writings especially would have been full of statistics and figures - "And in Corinth, we had 143 at the special talk I gave. 23 were batized, 13 sisters and 10 brothers". Perhaps the early Christians cared more about people than figures.

the two "get out of jail cards" that the society plays when explaining away failed predictions are:
god's prophecies are never wrong, its just our interpretation, let's wait a while and when things are clearer we'll tell you in retrospect what the prophecy really was.
we never actually said that, it was the rank and file, they got over excited.
The two "get out of jail cards" that the Society plays when explaining away failed predictions are:
The current congregation book study book "ISAIAH'S PROPHECY Light for All Mankind", certainly is the hardest and most tedious I have ever come across, and I remember studying such classics as the "Then is Finished the Mystery of God". Getting to the subject of this thread though, given the failed prophecies regarding 1874, 1925, 1975 and the "this generation", paragraph 26 of this week's study certainly looks like a case of the "pot calling the kettle black". |
26 In recent years some have tried to discern the future in more "scientific" ways [to foretell the future]. There is even a discipline called futurology, defined as "a study that deals with future possibilities based on current trends". For example, back in 1972 a group of academics and businessmen known as the Club of Rome predicted that by 1992 all the world's reserves of gold, mercury, zinc, and petroleum would be exhausted. Well, the world has faced horrendous problems since 1972, but that prediction was wrong on all counts. The earth still has reserves of gold, mercury, zinc, and petroleum. Indeed, man has worn himself out trying to predict the future, but his guesses are always unreliable. Truly, "the reasoning of the wise men are futile"! - 1 Corinthians 3:20. |
