The great fur debate has re-surfaced today with the news that Nelson Mandela wore a fur hat recently.
So here is the question would you ever wear real fur and are there moral implications here? Or are you more of a fig leaf person?

Declining Meeting Attendance-CO visit
by TheListener inso we have our circuit overseer this week.
we're getting the crap kicked out of us (figuratively) for our meeting attendance.
we have attendance in the 70% range for some of our meetings.

From my experience, I don't believe that meeting attendance is purely a western problem.
Meeting attendances are a problem in Eastern Europe, Africa and SE Asia because generally the people here are poor and have to work harder. If you have no money for bus fares and have to work evenings, it is not likely that meeting attendance is going to be a high priority.
The WTBTS demands of 5 meetings a week is the real problem. It is a form of control.

Shortage of skilled labourers to work at Bethel??
by starfish422 inmy father, age 62, has been called to bethel to help do some work in his particular trade.
he went up yesterday and will be there until friday night, if, as my sister put it, "they let him go.
" she said, "i know, i made the same comment.

I have another large axe to grind with the way the rank & file are used at Bethel.
If bethel is asking for labourers or unskilled workers, and there is potentially large suppy of these, then the local body of elders has to 'certify that the brother or sister' is in good standing and is a 'spiritual person'. Fail to do your 10 hours a month, not do your fair share of answering up at the Watchtower Study, etc, and there a fair chance you don't get to Bethel. I have heard it so many times before, 'we should be encouraging brother so-and-so to be out in weekend field service not sending him off to Bethel'.
Now, if your skills are such that bethel is desperate for them, these standards just fly out the window. If they need a brain surgeon, a computer expert or other sort of boffin they'll have anybody - even sisters.
Don't get me wrong about the sisters bit, I am in no way sexist, and am generally appalled at the way talented sisters are overlooked in favour of less talented brothers. The 'even sisters' bit reflects their attitude not mine!

Are You Sure JWs Are The Only Ones Persecuted?
by Voyager inmany people wonder why jws continue to try and deceive the world into thinking that they are the (only ones) persecuted.
nearly every news-report i have read for the past years, will contain the names of other religions that are persecuted right along with the jws, yet it seems that the watchtower just will not open it's eyes to the persecution that other churches receive as well.

Certainly not. Christians (of the non-JW kind) are persecuted in far greater numbers than JWs. They just like to kid themselves they are the only ones ever persecuted.
Also, JWs are proud of the fact that they are persecuted for bearing the name Jehovah. On the other hand, Christ said you will be persecuted on account of my name (Christ Jesus)!

Mindless Meetings and Bored Dubs
by TheListener in"we'd like to excuse those that have talks in the second school, and those that would like to listen.".
alright, so i am sitting at the meeting last week and i hear that very typical repetitive announcement.
i start to look around and i realize that it is the same people every week who go to the back to sit in the second school.

Yes - too many just go through the motions. The zeal and enthusiasm of years ago has all but disappeared.

Anointed to Apostate
by groovycat. inhey, .
does anyone know if any of the 144,000 has left the jw's due to a change in beliefs?
what was the reaction of their hall?

There seems to be some confusion setting in here about WTBTS theology.
The Governing Body claims to represent the 'faithful and discreet slave', and hence all of Governing Body are of the 'annointed'. There aren't non-voting, non-annointed members of the Governing Body. The Governing Body alone vote on any proposed changes to JW doctrine.
Non-annointed at Brooklyn may well run the corporation, oversee much of the writing, publishing and distribution, etc. and may well have a degree of influence with members of the Governing Body but it is only what is agreed behind the closed doors of the GB meetings that has any weight.
It's just the way it works in JW land. -

Will they ever be mainstream?
by Justin insome religions which have been on the fringe of society are eventually accepted into the mainstream because they have an aspect which is socially acceptable or beneficial to society.
for example, the seventh day adventists have hospitals and the mormons have the tabernacle choir.
but the jws seem to have nothing with which to appeal to the larger culture.

Hybridous,
I don't personally feel that the corporate mentality rules everything at Brooklyn. I feel that, no matter how bad things could get for them, marginalised, loss of membership, out of touch, etc. - they will not change. It is not in the nature of the beast to do so.

Vigil for my daughter, please.
by outnfree inas mentioned in my other thread, my daughter lena is having brainsurgery on monday, jan 24. the surgery will last 6-7 hours, so i'm hoping the board members will be willing to make a special effort tomorrow to send positive thoughts, healing energy, good wishes and prayers her way.
we are asking that the surgeon's hands be delicate and skillful and that lena does not bleed overmuch and that brain damage be minimal (if not non-existant).
surgery begins at 8 am eastern standard time (us), but we have to have her to the hospital by 6 am, so this is "good night!

Annointed: yearly figures
by DaCheech in.
is it my imagination.... or did the numbers of "annointed" partaking in the lords evening meal go up by 5 people this year?.
what explanation can make any sense at all about this?
-
eyeslice
The whole WTBTS theology one this does not make sense. yet, only a few months ago a whole Watchtower article was devoted to the subject of the 144,000 - a literal number.
Of the billions on earth today or who have ever lived, how can the arguement be made that only 144,000 are in a special relationship with God? John 3:16 talks about God loving the whole world - I am sure that out there somewhere, there are more than 144,000 who are far better than the majority of practicing JWs today.
