Never been catholic, but from what I've read and seen, seems like an archaic, 2000 year old set of Roman rites.

I sure you have noticed that many JW families and individuals will use the coming "new world" to avoid responsible action. Examples:
You should have health insurance. Why- armageddon is coming, Jeh will care for us, etc.
You should plan for retirement. Same answers
You should act responsibly in your life towards global warming- Why? Jeh will fix everything in the new world.
Have you noticed this trend in yourself? Have you noticed it in others? How do you fight it?
Most are not so irresponsible as to intentionally not have health insurance but I notice this thought trend in myself (some greater power or future event will take care of this problem without my acting responsibly)

I have seen a few euologizing funeral talks in KH's. And I have encouraged families to add different things to the talk to have more of a remembrance tone. But this is all a measure of the reasonableness and indoctrination level of the people involved. Some straight-laced borgites would never stray from the outline (I agree its a very boring, emotionless outline), others give a talk that is memorable for years and really captures the spirit of the person.

Circuit Overseer's Callous Remark
by snowbird ini was just thinking about a co's closing remarks one sunday after the watchtower study.
he stated that he had heard that ray franz was dead.
he didn't call him by name, of course.

One of the first things that got me to thinking clearly was when I considered Muslim extremists. I thought- wow they are willing to kill, die, etc because they believe that their take on a 2000 year old set of books is the right one. What a closed minded, archaic way of thinking.....
Hey wait a minute......
Why should any one person wish another harm because of difference in opinions about a 2000 year old set of books? It shows that some of the really indoctrinated people in the org have begun to loose their humanity.
Even lawyers who abuse each other in court have more class than that. They usually will not wish the opposing party harm.

Would you really want to live forever
by darth frosty ini just finished reading this book called the alchemist.
it is a very compelling story about following your dreams.
what i found most intriguing about the book is the depth of spirituality it brought out in me.

Living forever would be great. The problem is when people don't live now. Someone once told me- whereever you are- be there.
Why not travel, get educated, enjoy watching your children play baseball, enjoy meeting and spending time with people. So many JW's fail to do these things because of the dream of the future (and the rules for getting there)
When my kid would say "I can't wait for the new world" my wife and I (in a moment of shock and frustration) would say - "Your life right now is pretty great."

Didya ever notice that the cited scriptures often didn't make the point?
by AlmostAtheist ineven when i was a faithful dub, it used to bother me that the watchtower would make some point, then cite a scripture that didn't prove that point at all.
i saw time and again where they would say something like, "just as jehovah created the universe, so the faithful and discreet slave is leading his human creation today.
(gen 1:1)" and if you bothered to check the reference, you realized the point that actually needed substantiated was not covered by the verse.

We used to notice this "head fake" approach at Bethel. Often, the GB would start with one scripture, then with a few odd connectives begin talking about something in the entirely opposite direction. I notice this in WT cover articles and study articles often. Title and theme scripture is something like "Serve God out of Love for him" and most of the article is about serving God out of fear, hope for reward or some other motivation than love.

I have been watching (I like that much better than lurking- sounds less sinister) for about a year now. Some of the moving and eye-opening things about this board for me are/were:
- Information about the history and doctrine of JWs
- Personal stories of hatred, anger, frustration, depression from former and present JWs (some of the feelings I could identify with, but in less poignent form)
- Knowing that there were elders out there who were as frustrated and confused as I was
I finally decided to post because I came to a point where I knew that I was no longer going to be an elder. I felt that even if the borg monitors this site and could track me down (a real fear), I was not an elder anymore, and more importantly, I didn't want to be. About 6 months ago I started having a real problem saying some of the things from the stage that I was expected to say. That feeling progressed until I felt uncomfortable even commenting on much of the material that I was expected to comment on.

First, I have to say that when you read the scripture in Ephesians about the suit of armor from a modern english bible (other than NWT) it makes a lot more sense.
The belt of truth- A very interesting scripture. The start of resisting demons is a belt of truth. No need to add stuff about reading publications, etc. Because if you know the facts, the truth, you are well on your way.
Shoes of the "gospel of peace" Why the gospel of peace? Maybe because Jewish zealots in the first century were teaching the gospel of armed revolt against the Romans. The christian gospel of peace is simple- love your neighbor, peaceful resistance, etc. It is difficult to describe the front covers of the WT and AW and the lead presentations as a "gospel of peace"
Finally, I couldn't help but notice that the whole article started out talking about powerful superhuman creatures bent on causing death and destruction and finished up talking about apostates- people who believe differently than the borg. Yeeesh!
