  My daughter asked me why we don't go to meetings

  last night, completely out of the blue, my 6 year old daughter, asked my wife and i why we don't go to meetings anymore.

  she actually said that she misses them.

  i know, where have i failed!!!.

  I faded when my son was 7. He was very happy to be able to have a real birthday party. I recommend talking frankly about your issues with the "former religion". There are too many scary stories out there about relatives bringing the children back in. I worked hard to innoculate my son against all that cult Bullshi&. You dont have to use the word cult- but explaining why certain doctrines made no sense to you any more helps alot.

  I thinks that children are smarter than we give them credit for- and do not (contrary to witness belief) naturally believe in God. Children are naturally inquisitive, reasoning, and questioning. Only when their parents present something to them as "the truth" (repeatedly) do they accept it. Presented with openness and questioning they do much better.

  "Athiests on the March"

  over the christmas holidays, a witness dropped off a whole bag full of magizines, etc for me (like they had been saving up my order for the last 3 years at the hall).

  i briefly perused them and then dumped them in the recycling bin.

  one of the issues that caught my eye and offended me was a magazine that showed a bunch of angry white guys (they looked like labor union leaders) carrying signs- the headline was "athiests on the march".

  I'm glad someone else got a laugh out of the article- I notice its not on the jw.org website anymore. But- if you need good humor- the "Garden of Eden was a literal place" magazine is still up!!!

  Did any of you see it? Did someone perhaps scan it? From what I remember- its pretty good entertainment value- if you have a strong stomach. As usual- the article cherry picked quotes from fundamentalists complaining about Sam Harris, Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens and how "aggressive" they are.

  If by agressive you mean "writing books" and then trying to sell them by giving interviews- well then I guess so!!

  Actually- its totally and utterly riduculous!! A few guys trying to sell books (pretty good books most of them)- being called "agressive" by one of the most dishonest, controlling, and slick religious media organizations in the world.

  I for one, have NEVER had an athiest drop 50 magazines on my porch and call me to make sure I read them, try to make me feel guilty for not going to their group think sessions, or convince my family that I am of questionable character because I quit believing!!!

  Did anyone watch the series finale of Big Love?

  Like the rest of you- I was fascinated with how this series accurately portrayed cult life, group think, leader worship, the corrupting affect of power, etc, etc.

  I was confused on where it came down on polygamy though. There were several and often- digs against the whole lifestyle (lack of empowerment of women, jealousy problems, money issues, etc) but the last couple of episodes almost made the case for the state not regulating poly-amorous relationships. "Let people love who they want, how they want" seemed to be a message that was lurking in the script. But that message was hard to reconcile with the damage that the lifestyle did to those who participated.

  Must read- New Yorker article on Scientology

  this article caught my eye- and held my attention through a very long plane ride.

  the similarities in thought control methods between the witnesses and the scientologists are amazing.

  although they are very different doctrinally- the control, guilt, isolationism, and leader-worship are very similar.

  the most funny one is the one about earthquakes since, well, there just isnt an increase in earthquakes:.

  GREAT Prophecy!!!

  Because any time your big "event" happens- you can say- "See, we were right- great earthquakes"- cause they're always happening!!!

  I predict that when the next war breaks out the sun will be shining somewhere on the earth!

  Bethel Heavy...How is this determined?

  i've read the term "bethel heavy" here and heard it once and a while when i was a jw.

  as someone who has never even visited bethel, i was wondering if a few of you can fill me in on the details.. i know of course this is an unofficial title, but what is the main factor in reaching this status?

  is it mainly given to those who head certain departments, or even work high up in certain departments?

  Also- certain Bethel Elders were heavys- even though their job description was less than glamourous. For some reason- they would be selected to serve on "Bethel Committees".

  You could always tell when someone was trying to be a heavy- but just didn't have the juice yet.

  Signs of a heavy: Scowl on face, Nice smiley face at morning worship, carry around elder's book (or- .....Branch Organization manual), taught entrants school, went on speaking assignments, conducted WT study, conducted morning worship. Usually quite full of themselves, usually had good connections in high places (we went out to eat with the Sydlicks, the Barry's are such a lovely couple, etc, etc.) Every male aspired to be a heavy.

  Its really a very monastic and heirarchical organization!!!

  this is what the guest speaker was saying at my wife's hall yesterday.

  she and i was babysitting our niece and since she had three kids going to the hall with her (including my two daughters) i figured i'd go with her to help out.

  they were rambuctious and wild to say the least.. while i was in the hallway with my youngest daughter, i continued to listen to the speaker talk.

  Actually- you WILL DIE if you do not get baptized. Of course you WILL DIE if you do get baptized too.

  Funny- they havent figured out a cure for death yet.....No matter what you do- eventually- you die.

  Notice the passport application- MG Henschel swears to protect and defend the Constituation of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic and swears alligience to the same.

  Seems like brothers in Africa would have been persecuted rather than sign/swear such an oath.
