I would like to retire at about 55, but as Ballistic commented, I will probably be working full time until I drop dead at 83. That will nicely solve another problem for the state of looking after me in my dotage.

At what age do you plan to retire?
by JH inso many people start working young in life, and expect to retire around 58 years old.
some even retire much before that.
but so many witnesses never expected to reach that age in this system.

I think I`m catching Ally Mcbeal sickness.....
by Sparks in....and it`s great!!!
over the past few days, when ever i start to think of the witnesses,i hear bob dylan...i`ll try to explain.
when i was still attending the meetings and still regarded my self as a witness.i would often hear very nasty remarks from other witnesses, mostly elders and full time pioneers, about those that only came to the hall for the memorial or c.os visit.the most memorable time was while out on the minestry with an elder.a young couple went by pushing their baby in a buggy.

Pierce Brosnan is Irish.
Brits can't spell simple words like humor, color or center. They use weird units like kilograms and litres, instead of falling into line with pounds, gallons and bushels like the rest of the world (ie. the US).
We know from US "comedy" shows that Brits have two accents - "I was born with a silver spoon up my arse, so I am talking like a strange cousin of the royal family" or "Eeee bah gum, I am Daphne in Frasier from oop north".
Actually, make that three - "Dick van Dyke authentic cockerneee".
And the pinnacle of British comedy is Benny Hill. Apparently.
Remind me not to post when I have just woken up, without the benefit of two mugs of tea and a big bowl of Crunchy Nut Red. Right, I am off to kick the cat.

Thanks to pr_capone, Utopian Raindrops and Country Girl for responding to my question.
My comment was not directed at one particular group, I was interested in the common thinking pattern displayed in many different groups. I was not criticizing, I was asking Why?
pr_capone - I can certainly see how someone who has been brought up in two different countries would see themselves as a part of both.
U_R - Thanks for the insight on the American history of Italian immigrants. That poster made me smile - "Speak American". It gives me a clue why us British posters are always being pulled up for not spelling certain words the American way. I am sure we will be fully assimilated in time.
Country Girl - I am inclined to agree with your ideas. I have heard America described as a melting pot of cultures. Maybe it is more like a stewpot with lots of stuff bobbing around in it, but not mixing together.

What exactly ARE the JWs known for?
by detective ini was reading a thread in which jh said:.
people knew we were jw's just by the way we dressed, but also by the way we talked.. .
now, not to come down on jh by any means, but this raised a question in my mind.

I type "jehovah" into the search function on the websites of two British broadsheets - www.independent.co.uk and www.guardian.co.uk - from time to time. Particularly in the Independent, the vast majority of references to Jehovah's Witnesses are as a metaphor for particularly unwelcome visitors. Almost all references to "Jehovah" are in the context of Jehovah's Witnesses and none are particularly positive. So the existance of JWs cannot be said to be glorifying God's name.
I can concur that people who have not had any direct contact with JWs, and many who have, have next to no idea of what JWs actually believe. They certainly do not know JWs as people who are preaching the "good news of the kingdom". All those hours spent trailing around the streets - completely ineffective. But the GB knows that it keeps the publishers occupied, which is the most important thing.

Have You Been Divorced?
by Outaservice indivorce is much more common in the jehovah's witness community than they would like to admit.
probably more so than the population in general.. if you have been divorced do you think that the watchtower society contributed to the divorce, or caused it, or is it just possible you married some jerk or abuser and divorce would have occured no matter what religion you were, or even if you had no religion?.
possibly you got married way too young as the end was coming and there is no marriage in the resurrection if you died.

My JW marriage ended in divorce. When we married I was 19 and he was 25. I got married because I wanted to have sex, I had had a crush on him since I was 14 and I thought I was in love. I don't know why he married me, apart from to have sex. He was psychologically incapable of being a loving husband. Being a JW certainly gave him plenty of justification for his behaviour.
The fact that I had continued my education and could support myself certainly gave me the means to leave him. I really dread to think what would have become of me if I had been a good JW pioneer wife with no job. That is why JW women should not have careers.
I have seen the WT use the statistic which shows that couples who do not have sex before marriage are much less likely to divorce. I believe that this is not because those couples have happier, healthier marriages, but rather because they are from backgrounds where divorce (and sex before marriage) is frowned upon.
The Watchtower did not directly cause my divorce. It directly caused the marriage in the first place, and certainly did not contribute anything positive to my married life.
I am remarried, and very happy with my husband who has never had any religious influence in his life. I would not want to be in the same town as my ex husband with or without the influence of the WT, and I would not consider re-establishing a relationship with him if he was the last man on earth and my life depended on it.

This is sort of off topic, but I think it is relevant.
The Sopranos is about Americans.
How many generations does it take before a person is no longer Irish, Norwegian, Polish, Italian, whatever, and is American?
Is this unique to people who have descended from immigrantsfrom Europe to America?
Is it acceptable for people of Asian extraction to consider themselves to be that nationality rather than American?
I ask because most people born of immigrants in the UK consider themselves to be British. This does not mean that they forget or disrespect the culture of their parent's original country.
Is this something to do with Brits thinking that 200 miles is a long way, and Americans thinking that 200 years is a long time?

WHERE DID ALL THAT WATER GO?
by MYOHNSEPH inas i recall, "the society" at one time taught the flood waters of noah's day came from an immense canopy of water, which formed sometime during creation and hovered above the earth until it all broke loose in the flood.
o.k., cool.
but does anyone know of an explanation of where it all went afterwards?
-
Fe2O3Girl
Polar ice.
The water canopy created a global temperate climate, when it fell the polar regions formed.
I don't know if that is an official WT teaching, but it is what I understood as a dub growing up.
I don't know if the volume of water in the icecaps would account for enough water to cover all mountains on the entire surface of the earth.......
