just wanted to put this out there for any lurkers.. as someone that grew up during the 70s and 80s, we were promised that we would be in the first picture long ago.

WingCommender, I'm also 41 and what you said is soo true. Never could I have mentionned to my parents that Armageddon wouldn't have come by 2020. It was impossible, not logical. there was no doubt about the generation of 1914 and only evil, blind people would not see it. We had the truth!

I'm looking at myself in the mirror and I'm discovering gray hair. Not only my parents grew old, so am I!

What puzzles me is that people who lived in these years will still practice shunning if you dare to question the teachings. nonesense.

Reality:

- Broken family due to practice of shunning

- Divorce rate is as high as anywhere else

Reality: Depression due to aspirations (become a sport star, a phychologist, etc) being suppressed.

Reality: Endless gossiping and competition

Expectation: Protection from wickedness within the congregation

Reality:

- Pedophiles are not reported to the police

- Some abuse their fellow congregants knowing they will be discouraged from going to court.

Reality:

- Individuals who do not hold a title or disregarded.

- Individuals often told that if they think differently than from the organization, they are boastful filled with pride.

- Women are oppressed

A question about the contemporary generation teaching following a conversation with a JW apologist

i would like to ask the ex-jws on this site to put their ‘apologists hat’ back on for a moment, so that i can go through the overlapping generation teaching in an attempt to make sense of it.

i apologise if these points have already been addressed on this site.a quick background for the reason for my request… having never confronted a jw apologist on the topic, i recently engaged with a jw regarding the official understanding of a ‘generation’ and unfortunately he didn’t have an answer to the points i was making.

i was left a little confused as to what the official jw response would/should be.so i was hoping that my thoughts below might be considered from an apologist’s perspective.the point in question relates to this section of the watchtower article below from 2008, as well as the jw.org video explanation of the overlapping generation:---:w08 2/15[box on page 25] can we calculate the length of “this generation”?the word “generation” usually refers to people of various ages whose lives overlap during a particular time period or event.

Slimboyfat: The best a JW apologist could say, in my opinion, is that the faithful and discreet slave don’t claim to be infallible, and that understanding of this verse awaits clarification.

This is exactly what I was doing when I was in. However, when it was time to teach this to my kids, I simply could not. I could not bear the thought of teaching them non sense. So I quit.

it just seems rather odd to me that supposedly a million people had tickets or wanted tickets and yet the upper deck of the arena was half empty (or less) and they cancelled the outdoor overflow thing.

just a bit strange based from what was reported the day before.. i wonder if it was no-shows or being overly optimistic..

you don't get it... the tree survived the flood. I know its stupid, but that's what I was told and I believed it for a long time!

I find that the XJW community often seems to forget that the police does not always equal justice. Yes, JWs need to tell the police who are generally better at handling abuse cases, but the system is not fool proof. I personally believe in proofs, such as DNA analysis, video/audio recordings, analysis of cell phones and computers, etc. Proof to corroborate the account of the victim. And yet, every once in a while, I find myself watching the news or some documentary where the accused is sent to jail on nothing more than the word of the victim. I find this deeply disturbing. I’d find it even more disturbing if this type of scenario happened several decades later.

Reality, the majority could sing "I'm the great Pretender" from the Platters. Many served two years just to make it to that course, hoping to find a mate, and off with the pioneering work.

This is a non-argument meant to discredit the opponent. For instance, recently, I lost too much time on Facebook trying to convince a women that the black community is doing much better in the states and ignoring the progress would be ignoring the heroic victories of MLK, Malcom X, Rosa Parks and the likes. Instead of offering counter arguments, a few of them told me that I didn't know what I was talking about because I wasn't black. One told me not to quote brother Malcom X deliberately not addressing the quote itself.

Same goes with USA. They can have an opinion on my prime minister and I can have an opinion on their politics. The truth is somewhere in between us and it is by openly talking about it that it shall be found.

That's exactly what they did when France tried to tax them at 60%. They ended up loosing. Now that I am out, I don't even know how that 60% was going to work. We were told it was a broad general 60% on all donations, but I bet it wasn't. Probably something like: 60% of the money you don't show expenses for. Still, Watchtower is to be treated as a business, it should pay the same taxes rates as any other business, which is certainly not 60%.
