I remember being at some JW gatherings and certain ones would toss back beers like they were dying of thirst. Some would get loaded too when we'd go to resteraunts together.

Drinking & Jehovah's Witnesses
by minimus inyou know, i knew a lot of bethelites and every one of them loved their booze.
as an elder, i would entertain alot of the cos, dos and bethelites and their wives.
it was not unusual for the wives to get loaded while they were at my house!

What was it that "clicked" w/ you that this wasn't the "true religion"?
by cognac infor me, it was not being able to prove that people were going to be resurrected to earth... i'm still not sure of the answer, but for some reason that just started this huge, fast snowball of different things that i couldn't prove... .
this lightbulb just went off in my head... .

Do you consider your time as a JW wasted time??
by karter inmany of us have devoted a lot of time and energy to the jw's at the expense of other things like education , planing for retirement , family time just to name a few.. i don't consider it all wasted time there was a lot of good i learnt however i'm doing things now as a jw i never would have.. i don't have the same time pressure and never fell guilty about taking a lot of time out for myself as one elder said to me"if we don't keep you brothers real busy in the work of the kingdom you get swallowed up by the world" .

I don't consider it a waste of time overall. Sure, the amount of time put into pioneering could've been used better elsewhere, but even all that magazine salesman work did me alot of good when it comes to my personality, such as helping me be a more 'people person'. Plus, dealing with many in the congregation, along with the cold calling door to door work helped me devolop a more thicker skin so to speak.

Reinstatement to inactivity.
by R.F. ina person is disfellowshipped, works hard to get reinstated and once they finally are, they go straight to inactivity and you almost never see them in the kingdom hall again.
when i was an active jw i couldn't understand why a person would go through the process of reinstatement only to become inactive.
i understand why now .

No offense taken at all, I was just joking with you Homerovah.
Sweetface and I are good friends, so it was just a cool thing to use her avatar I guess.
Smoky, that definitely sounds like the reason your friend did it. I know going through the reinstatement process has to be a real drag. I sympathize for anyone that goes through it.

I was at a DC a couple of years ago watching the baptisms and there was someoen sitting behind me. They said..."Becky Lynn and Sammy Sue(don't know their real names) just got baptized, now they can marry those two brothers." I was a faithful little dubbie back then and was appalled by it of course, but don't couldn't care less now. It's funny how I was so oblivious to some of the "walk away from the org" tactics back then. lol
Homerovah:
Why are you using Homer Simpson as your avatar? Are you the same person?

I sometimes wish I was still In.
by faundy ini have read things on here that have made me think.
i know it's the general idea.
but the realisation of some of the issues and their legitimacy has made me wish that i was still a witness.
-
R.F.
I know what you mean faundy.
Even though i'm technically 'still in', I wonder if I should try to help some see what the borg is really about, really ask them things that would hopefully get them thinking. Then when I do talk with them, they tell me things that shows their close-mindedness, showing me how futile it would be to discuss such things with them, and makes me loose the desire to talk with them. That's just me.

Elders: How were/are you to be towards the disfellowshipped?
by R.F. inas we know that the elders are the only ones officially allowed to seek out disfellowshipped ones for the purpose of helping the get back into the congregation.
i was wondering though, how are they to treat the df'd when out in public?
are they instructed to completely shun them then?
-
R.F.
Thanks for that info OM.
I often wondered if some elders took advantage of their position and ignored the borg rule of shunning and kept contact with certain ones, making it seem that it was for spirtual reasons.

How many of you have seen this happen quite a bit or perhaps done it yourself?

Am I the only one that didnt realize about the GB?
by yourmomma inhere is a question for you.
i'll give a little back ground.
i was raised in the witness organization however in about 1993 i encountered much hypocrisy and left for about 3 years.

R.F.
Interesting experience you had there.
Yes, I did know all along that the GB demanded obedience. Of course, I always noticed that instead of saying "Governing Body" they would say the "faithful and discreet slave", and that we should obey that group. We all knew what it meant though since the GB is supposed to be the representative of the FDS. Then again, some congregations can be a bit different. You were guaranteed to hear that concept at every meeting here in the congro I attended.
Good thing you've realized that and are out of the org now.
