i've been studying with the jw's for a few months and i've attended a few meetings but things are feeling somewhat strange...i don't quite get the jist of things but i feel that i'm learning more of what the watchtower teachers and less of what the bible actually says.. i never open my bible.. i'm always reading the watchtower pamphlets.
i really like the people i've met in the congregation and the guy thats been doing the studies with me has been an awesome friend.. .
but i'm just having some issues.. i mean.. they translated their own bible to suit their own doctrines it seems.

some great replies here. a couple of points to consider. once you're in, you're in. if you have disagreements, 'sin' (which includes some really minimal offenses), decide it's not for you, everyone giving you love right now will shun you in an instant if the elders decide to df you. not the biggest deal if you've only invested a little time in the wtbts, but buying into the dogma of not hanging out with 'worldly' people, would cut off contact w/ all your old friends....then if you're in for a while, you've lost all moral support if things go bad. and i'm sure you've heard of 'crisis of conscious' by raymond franz who was a governing body member. definitely read that, and don't tell anyone w/in the org. that you're reading it, they're not down with 'researching' unless it's with their own publications. it takes years to realize the whole picture...elders are secretive and their meetings are filled with power wrangling and there's a lot of bs that happens behind the scenes that most wits don't see or don't chose to see. franz's book gives an excellent look into the org. and how blatant the leadership is about protecting the organization over the individual....going directly against jesus' counsel and illustration of the looking after the individual, sheperd and lamb illustration. also, the extra rules imposed get really nitty, gritty and unchristian. jws think that everyone is going to die at armageddon unless they're a jw. god will kill everyone. it's a form a racism, not apparent until you're in for a while....and then it's so common-speak it won't feel like racism.

..oh, i wish i still had that vinyl...i had to give it to my friend to keep b/c my parents would never let me have a band in the house like that and he ended up moving....i remember hiding it behind my dresser.

i heard, the more prominent the blood card, the smaller the penis. that's what i heard, i haven't done any field checks and would rather not do field checks.

i used to balance my checkbook sometimes.
another favorite was unsticking the pages of a new bible or folding back the dogears of an old one.
before i went to europe and was learning italian and semi fluent in bad-grammar french, i'd translate the talks in my head in one of the languages.
then, by the time i went to italy, i actually understood 75% of the talks at the hall.
that's when i thought about joining a different language congregation b/c i was so sick of hearing the shame shite over and over again, i thought it would at least be nice to learn another language and make the meetings like free language classes.

that one's killer! even when i was 'in', it'd be so damn embarrassing to be with someone who had to make a showy display of their important conversation with god. i used to love interrupting them w/, 'and buy me a new stereo for my car and hook me up with a hot chick at this convention and....'
now, when w/ the very few wit friends through family, if i'm hangin' with them, i lift my arms and head to the sky and ask if they'd like to say grace. i usually get a kick under the table, but they're not the praying in front of everyone type.

sounds like an important product and too many people don't realize that there are a ton of great vinyl releases that have never or will ever be re-released onto cd b/c music is a business and it's all a numbers game.
sure, you can get every sound the beatles ever made, even john making a fart in a amp, but punk singles, old blue grass, there's so much out there that is still vinyl only.
i'm very happy about the turntables w/ usb connections....i might have to buy that to rip some of my vinyl collection that hasn't been released to cd so i can throw them on ebay for $$.

we have joint custody and that means they need joint parental consent to counsel a minor.. i am filing for sole custody of our 12 year old daughter and will be serving him with the legal paperwork next week.

so, you're inactive and were baptized and they counseled your 12 year old daughter w/o even offering for you to be there?
i think, i hope, that even goes against society rules.
did you send the letter yet? i wouldn't. i'd go to a lawyer first, you may have a case and you may want to pretend that you're still 'in' the org., but have had difficulties. any correspondence you give them could be used against you in a case, or even a case for getting full custody of your daughter.
you know if the society wants to get legal counsel involved, they'll give the local elders a game plan that could end up hurting your case.
i would be livid as well, but i'd be very careful right now and play it like a game of chess so you come out with full custody and maybe even a well publicized case against the society that will show your daughter that what they did was slimy as well as make others realize what goes on behind closed doors.
looking back over the years it's funny to me now how we selected committees for jcs.
it seems like there was always at least one barney fife, gestapo elder who was chomping at the bit to be selected.
rarely would a guy like that get selected.

you bring up a good point...elders and elders who have stepped down that i know, they are pounded with congregation work, by the time they get to a committee they're already pissed that they have to devote more time from their personal lives to go through the JC process, which some elders, the ones with no families, no lives, will get excited and drag the process out when the others just want to get it over with and go home.
so, a JC is already a set up for a negative experience as those on the JC probably have full time jobs and have to put in an extra 30 hours of week of elder work including meetings, preaching, etc., throw a JC at them and they're not happy already.
and being in the elder mafia, b/c it is a mafia mentality, young elders have a hard time saying 'no' and older elders have figured out how to pass the shitty work to the new elders.
it's a set up for becoming a pissed, jealous human being, but not knowing why they're pissed and jealous and so they take it out on those who have genuine happiness, even though they're supposed to portray this 'spiritual well being' themselves, while inside they're seething....and don't even know it.
