Going from JW to Mormon is like going from the frying pan into the wok. She can get "disfellowshipped" in the mormon faith as well and it's the exact same thing she experienced as a JW.

cameo-d. First, welcome to the board! Second, it doesn't seem like you realize it (but maybe you do) but this is a board for FORMER Jehovah's Witnesses and current JWs who want to leave. There are a few people who plan to remain JWs but not many, since the religion actually forbids conversations with the likes of us, so talking to us is major disobedience to the church leadership to begin with.
That said, if you're looking for an unbiased view of JWs, this is the place. Of course, you'll find a lot of biased views as well, but a lot of us are just people trying to get on with our lives and we know that admitting the good things about them doesn't diminish our decision to leave.
As a general rule, JWs don't buy into that Da Vinci Code stuff. They believe the Bible tells the truth about Jesus' death and burial, and that his body was destroyed upon his resurrection to heaven. If you have more questions, go ahead and ask, and we'll answer them to the best of our ability. Many here have been in the religion for decades, and have many more in-depth insights that go beyond the rosy, idealized picture the Watchtower presents. -

Anti-College/Pro-Pioneering Convention Interviews

this transcription approximately covers the second half of the presentation.
i've omitted names and locations to preserve individuals' privacy.

I know some people who "support" themselves on a part-time job. The one I know mooched pretty much mooched off his parents. They'd bring food over, clean his house, pay some of his bills. There is no way you can be totally independent with a part-time job today.

"You did so well, now you have us hooked -- maybe there'll be serial installments? That sounded too voyeruistic, never mind."
I think the best course of action will be to just keep it to myself from now on. Maybe once in a while I'll give more general updates, but I'm not sure. -

"No Pioneer has ever starved to death"
by B_Deserter inever hear that little nugget of wisdom?
you want to know why that's true?.
because it is darn near impossible to starve to death in the united states!!!!

Ever hear that little nugget of wisdom? You want to know why that's true?
Pioneers can't stave to death because the survival instinct will kick in before that happens and STOP them from pioneering before that happens! If someone is really facing starvation, then they'll go off the list. Even if they don't go off the list, given the choice between starvation and bugging people at their homes, any non-mentally-deficient human being is going to forage for food, first!
If someone says this to me, my answer is "so we should all work just enough to not starve to death? That doesn't sound like a good thing at all!" -

You know what will happen Mandette? The congregation will take care of her, and by the congregation I mean the people who work full-time, who aren't pioneers, and can afford to support someone who didn't bother to support herself. You think the other pioneers would do something? They can't! Every pioneer supports him/herself from the charity of a non-pioneer and that is a fact whether that support comes from the government, family members, friends, or inheritances. I know one old couple where the son-in-law runs a successful heavy equipment dealership. They live on land the man's father owned, in a house that is completely bought-and-paid-for. The son-in-law buys them all their vehicles, and not just their vehicles, but their daughter and her husbands as well. He doesn't skimp, either. He will literally go to a dealership, order a fairly nice car with ALL the upgrades. He will get the most expensive model with all the trimmings, and then give it to them, free. Now, he obviously doesn't have time to pioneer, but because he works hard he actually enables four to do so! I really hope they never bother him about being "too busy for Jehovah." He does more for "Jehovah" than they could DREAM of! Let's see THEM provide transportation and make it possible for FOUR PIONEERS to stay on the list!
So when this older gentleman talks about how we should all pioneer and try to support ourselves on part-time jobs, I just shake my head and laugh. If I had a house given to me as well as free vehicles yeah maybe I could support myself on a part-time job, but us here in the real world have to pay for those basic necessities, and they are HUGE expenses.
It is a fact that if every full-time working JW in the entire world quit their jobs tomorrow and started working part time, and all other governmental sources of support were cut off as well, they would all be off the pioneer lists a month later. -

~ The WTBTS competition to see who is willing to suffer the most ~
by FlyingHighNow inisn't the whole crux of the wtbts organization and its purpose a competition to see who is willing to suffer the most?
here's a conglomeration of experiences i have read about in the mags or heard of at conventions: .
sister masochistic: she has lived in an iron lung since childhood, a victim of polio.

I love the manipulation. They tell you not to compare yourself to others, that Jehovah is happy with what you can do. BUT THEN COMES THE AWAKE ARTICLE about Sister Masochistic or Brother African Farmer who crosses alligator-infested rivers at the risk of his crops failing and his family starving to make the meetings. The hidden message? YOU'RE NOT DOING ENOUGH! Look at sister so-and-so who is not only overcoming more adversity than you are, she's doing "better" in the congregation as well! She's doing MORE than YOU!
If they really believed that Jehovah is happy with what you can do, they wouldn't parade "examples" over the stage at assemblies and conventions. They wouldn't hint from the stage that non-pioneers won't survive armageddon. The fact of the matter is that most people, in fact, are NOT doing "all they can" in service to the organization. The "examples" are a way to guilt-trip the rank and file into going out door-knocking more often. -

I remember as a kid President Bush (the first one) was on TV and he was talking about the international day of peace or something like that. Then he said the phrase "peace and security." My dad got excited. "That's the call! This is it!" Of course it wasn't the call, and it wasn't the sign that armageddon was upon us, but nothing makes JWs more excited than to hear phrases like this from politicians. The only thing is just about every president mentions something to that effect, yet, every time, JWs are convinced (for a few minutes anyway) that it's the heralding of Armageddon.
