Okay, so what used to be called "Presiding Overseer" is now called "Coordinator of the Body of Elders". Now I'm wondering if perhaps the Governing Body also has a "Coordinator". Do they have a "Coordinator of the Governing Body"?

Howdy folks!

I've been away from the Watchtower for a long, long time now and I've got a few questions that I'd appreciate some help with.

1)Back when I was active there was the position called "Presiding Overseer". Has that title changed? If so, what is it now called? I understand that there is now a "Body of Elders". Does one them serve as the "Presiding Overseer"?

2) I remember that a number of years ago a certain Watchtower magazine saying that "Suggestions for improvement are proper." What I'd like to know is, if a person wanted to offer such a suggestion WHO specifically should it be addressed to? Would it simply be addressed to the Watchtower Society? Or, should it be addressed to the Governing Body? Or, to the Writing Department? Also, what physical address would that be? Should it be sent to Brooklyn, or where?

Hey DATA-DOG,

Having read your opening post, I see that you are burdened with some mistaken impressions.

#1) You have assumed that Joseph, Mary and Jesus went back to Nazareth directly after they had completed their business at the Temple (done everything the Law required). You assume that Luke 2:39 supports that conclusion.

#2) You have assumed that the "house" in which the Family lived when the Magi found them was in the town of Nazareth.

In regards to #1: You are failing to take into account that Luke leaves out some of the story that Matthew includes, just as Matthew leaves out some of the story that Luke includes. The verse you reference at Luke 2:39 doesn't represent a full picture of where the Family went after they completed their business at the Temple and eventually wound up back in Nazareth. Yes, in that verse Luke left out the part in which Matthew described their sojourn into Egypt. So you are quite mistaken in thinking that the Family returned to Nazareth immediately after they finished their business at the Temple. The fact is they remained in Bethlehem for a while. And they were still in Bethlehem when the Magi came to Jerusalem inquiring about the one born that was destined to become the king of the Jews. After the Magi had left, Joseph was told to flee into Egypt because Herod was going to kill Jesus. Joseph took his family and went to Egypt, and then after Herod had died he was told to be on his way back to the land of Israel. Joseph did as he was instructed, and he went to the town of Nazareth - the same town where he and Mary lived before going to Bethlehem in order to be registered. So these are the facts with regards to their line of travel: They first lived in Nazareth. Then they went to Bethlehem to be registered. Mary gave birth to Jesus while there, in a stable, and they continued to live in Bethlehem for a time. While living in Bethlehem the Magi came. After the Magi left, they themselves left Bethlehem and went to Egypt. After Herod died they returned to Nazareth.

In regards to #2: The "house" in which the Family lived when the Magi found them was in Bethlehem, not Nazareth. Matthew 2:8 says that Herod sent the Magi to Bethlehem, not to Nazareth. The Magi didn't see the "star" sitting above a house in Nazareth. No, it was sitting above a house in Bethlehem.

According to your way of thinking: Joseph and Mary went from Nazareth to Bethlehem, then back to Nazareth. Then, after seeing the Magi, they left Nazareth again and went to Egypt, and then back to Nazareth again after Herod died.

But the correct way of thinking is like this: Joseph and Mary went from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Then, after seeing the Magi, they left Bethlehem and went to Egypt, and after Herod died they went back to their point of origin, namely Nazareth.

It's obvious that you are in need of getting important details straight in your mind, DATA-DOG.

The "star" was definitely of Satanic origin. A little known fact is that it was Satan himself. Yes, the light in the sky that the Magi observed was the glow that all angels emit. Consider the angels that visited the shepards in the field the night Jesus was born. They emitted much light. The Magi saw the "star" (Satan) from a distance, and being that its light was up in the sky, then naturally it would look the same as any regular star.

From as far back as Genesis 3:15, Satan is doomed to destruction. Satan knew that the child Jesus is the one through whom his destruction will come. So Satan had every reason for wanting Jesus dead, and the earlier the better. And so Satan appeared as a "star" to the Magi, in order to lure them into Jerusalem. Once in Jerusalem it was a cinch that Herod would learn of the Magi's visit, and it was also a cinch that Herod would never tolerate a rival to his throne. And so the plot that Satan hatched in order to have Jesus murdered when but a child was right on track, and had God himself not intervened Satan would have succeeded in Jesus being put to death ahead of time. Yes, in order for Jesus' death to serve as a "ransom" he had to become a full-grown man and willingly sacrifice himself. So it can easily be seen why Satan wanted Jesus dead when but a child. Had he succeeded he would have thwarted God's purpose and rendered Genesis 3:15 meaningless.

Hey Decided!

What you really need to do, Ken P., is spend a whole lot more of your time at Funeral Homes. Hang out down there, and visit all the dead people as they are brought in. Observe how each one looks. Check to see if they "look good" or not. Chances are that if they don't look so good then the Mortician is lousy at his art, and likely made poor grades in Mortician School. Also, look closely at the deceased person's fingernails. Check to see if there is any gook underneath or anywhere around the cuticle area. If there is gook, you sure don't want THAT Mortician working on your body after you breathe your last. Learn from your visitations at the various Funeral Homes in your area, so that you can avoid making the same mistake as those you observed. One last bit of advice: Don't be in no hurry to die. You'll get there soon enough anyway, so no need to rush into it. Just make sure that when it happens that you will have done everything possible to avoid all the jerk Morticians. Get you a good-un, 'cause they don't cost any more dough than the bad-uns.

Hey Frazzled!

If you're smart you will NEVER allow your Dentist to fill your teeth with gold. Undertakers have no ethics. They will steal the gold out of a dead person's mouth faster than you can blink. Who is gonna check to see if a corpse still has its gold fillings or not? It's a cinch that no one is gonna perform an inspection upon a person that's laying in a casket. No one is gonna pry open the corpse's mouth and have a look! All the Undertakers know that!!! They all know the chances of them being found out is "0" (zero). They know it beats the heck out of panning for gold somewhere up in Colorado. And they all keep track of the price of gold. You're a fool if you trust any of them!

Question for believers.

this thread is not to try and prove which position is true or false, but i wanted to ask a question to believers.

i'll prelude the question with some examples.. jw's think that their message is true and benificial to others - therefore they knock on doors and informal witness etc.

i think it's safe to say most on this forum agree it is not true and it is in fact harmful (particularly to children) perhaps harmful in ways that the jw is not in a position to appreciate because of his/her warped perspective on things.. on the other hand - if their message was true, and armageddon is coming etc etc, then you could argue that them preaching this stuff is not harmful (actually its morally ambiguous but nevermind that for the time being) because the ends justifies the means - it all comes out in the wash etc.. in turn if mormons message was false then we can agree they are misleading, lying, wasting peoples precious time and lives and ultimately harming children and susceptable people by spreading it.

Anything that is untrue is harmful. I'm not fond of being taken down a road that goes to nowhere, which is exactly what untruths do. Screw all things untrue!

Something I noticed about every graveyard I've ever visited: They were chock full of dead people. Death is all around, no matter where a person goes. And if people aren't dying from illness they are killing one another. Yeah, someone will die in the next few seconds. And it just may be YOU! Watch out for the Grim Reaper for he cometh at a moment that you least expect. Then you'll be hauled off to the Undertaker. Your body fluids will be drained out. He will steal all the gold fillings you have in your teeth. You'll be put in a box that may even be too short for your body, but nobody will know. Then you'll be slowly lowered into a hole in the ground, and dirt thrown in your face. And there you will rot to pieces.
