Well, first of all, I've given my test paper to someone I really accept as a teacher. And, excuse me, where did you use "arguments" (save "arguments from authority" and "proof by intimidation")?

Well, whatever, nevermind. You actually remind me very much of a person on another ex-JW board some time ago. His initial appearance was very similar to yours. It took quite a while, but then he (or maybe, she? I think it never became clear) turned out to be a nice, intelligent, educated witty person with a great sense of humour. I guess somehow he or she lost a lot of overblown ego on the way (which is harder than losing weight, but definitely more rewarding!). I hope you're not the same person, but maybe things will work out in a similar way? We'll see.

You apparently don't recognize a well-known quote from _the_ classic work of literature by an author who had significant impact on German thinkers (including some you are fond of quoting ad nauseam, specifically Hegel) and even German everyday language to this very day. Many frequently-used idioms of the language cannot be understood without knowing this work. That's why anyone with even less than half the education you claim to have should recognize the first words of Mephistopheles in Faust I. Just like everyone with a little bit of education will recognize the lines "to be, or not to be / that is the question / whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer / ...".

Too bad your fat dictionary couldn't tell you that.

but your lack of simple thinking abilities and the basics of logic is showing more and more. But then, what's a troll to do? In spite of all the puffery, your "reasoning" so far did not exceed the level of your average door-knocking Dub. Since many people here had been average door-knocking Dubs before, they see that. If you really have any formal philosophy education (I doubt it), why is your mumbo-jumbo exactly the same canned stuff Brother Windowcleaner tells uninterested householders when he's out in the field?

When I talked about dangers associated with blood transfusions, my point was--what do you think about a parent who allows his or her child to contract a disease from contaminated blood. We both know that there are certain risks connected with taking blood products. Admittedly, I'm no doctor or biologist. But the health factor alone makes me want to abstain from blood. But would you be upset with a parent who allowed their child to contract AIDS from contaminated blood, as some parents have done?

Doctor (medical expert): Dear parents, your child is in grave danger. Little Bobby has lost massive amounts of blood, we must replace it. We have tried all the alternatives. He's about to die if we don't transfuse very soon.

Parent: But, Doctor, aren't there risks? I mean, we've been told he could contract AIDS and Hepatitis and all that stuff. We should avoid it.

Doctor: That is correct. As with any therapy, there are risks. However, without the transfusion, your child _will_ die. That is a risk of 1, or at least 0.95. The risk of an AIDS or Hepatitis infection is real, but it is only a very tiny fraction of 1. So, the benefit of a transfusion far outweighs the risks in this situation. This is the kind of decision that I, as a doctor, have to make all the time, not just with blood transfusions.

So, Dunstmann, here's your homework assignment: do a little research and find out what the infection risks are today (if you don't mind my Umgangssprache - didja look that up by now, oh grand exalted master of tongues?).

Reading the works of men like Kant, Hegel and so forth leaves me with the feeling that I've waded through a pile of dung that contains a gemstone here and there. Why go to all that trouble when I can find the same gemstones without nearly so much fuss and muss? So no, I'm no philosopher.

I wouldn't agree with you, but on the other hand I understand where you're coming from. Sometimes specialist language makes sense, but sometimes it _is_ hard to read philosophy without wondering if those lads aren't just very much in love with their own voice and perceived smartness. I think it's, er, entities of our Dunstmacher's calibre who are responsible for that second picture.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Someone mentioned Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy. One other great author is the Italian Luciano de Crescenzo; enourmously witty, down-to-earth and with a striking ability to get the very essence out of even the most obfuscated text. Among other books (such as the wonderful "Thus spake Bellavista"), he wrote a very fine "History of Greek Philosophy" in two parts. It's entertaining enough to read on the beach, but still educating enough to make you understand essential ideas, the persons behind them and the historic context of it all. I'm not sure how much of his work has been translated to English, but it's definitely worth looking for.

again, you have chosen to spew forth enormous loads of fancy language, this time with an added measure of arrogance (true Christian behaviour?). However - and you may kick and scream and quote like there's no tomorrow - so far you have presented zero, zilch, null, ja aber sowas von absolut gar nichts, of substance. You have neither asked good questions, nor have you given good answers (or any answers at all) - to me, these are the simple cornerstones of any philosophy.

Do you, deep inside, feel that you have anything to say? Now, please, don't grind this sentence into tiny little bits and give me your free-flowing stream of associations with whatever Leibniz or Hegel or whoever said. It's a very simple question, I want a simple answer. Of course, you know that "die stillschweigenden Abmachungen zum Verständnis der Umgangssprache sind enorm kompliziert" - you'll have to use the tiny bits of intuition and (eek! bad word!) common sense that may be left in your brains.

p.s.: Speaking of old Ludwig, consider 4.116 - and of course, 7. His language was exceptionally clear and succinct, even more than Kant's, who also didn't feel the need to throw smoke around his ideas and boast with his grand knowledge. Recently the Society in its wisdom used a concept of causality to explain by means of a diagram the fact of creation. This was discussed in a recent study article on Creation.

A concept of - causality! And a diagram no less! That's...that's...revolutionary! Again, the Brooklyn think tank leaves philosophers and biologists world-wide in awe. Causality! It was right in front of our eyes and we couldn't see it.

Expletives fail me.

Please tell me that

a) you're lampooning this dunsscot guy and I don't get it because I haven't seen your previous postings and I cannot hear your chuckling via the Internet, or
b) you are in fact "dunsscot" applauding himself by means of a second alias (Stafford style) and we can expect multitudes of co-dunsies to appear within the coming weeks, or
c) this is the first sign of a "teaser campaign" for one of those doctorate mills selling philosophy degrees from "renowned, but unaccredited universities" for just 300USD,

considering the simple fact that the watchtower society has declared the united nations an organization lead by satan, it certainly devote a lot of attention to what the un do and say.

America Bashing

with all of the america bashing going on of late, i thought i'd mention the fact that america stands for freedom, as flawed as our system may be.

you're even free to be critical of the government and it's leaders.

the many men and women who have died defending this country did so to preserve the rights even of people who hate the u.s. there are many different cultures here, so there are many different attempts at creating laws for the land.
