Er, which book? This is confusing. Irma Lauridsen's book has been available for years now; I think there is even a German translation. The quoted article (is that from Berlingske Tidende?) is dated 1994. Åge Iversen is, AFAIK, founding member of a Danish ex-JW support group. I'm not aware of any books she has written, and could not find anything on the Net.

Facts are it's extremely difficult to get a paper to print anything on the JWs at all - and when someone does, we should be grateful.

Any newspaper prints what they want, and they don't care what you think about it - if you're not a representative of the majority! And even thought you don't like to offend JWs, you're NOT a part of the majority.
Well, I don't give a fuck whether they give a fuck, and I even care less about being part of some -ority before writing what I think. In that respect, you and I have a lot in common :))

The use of the word hypocrite was very appropriate.
Well, personally I think even much stronger words would be appropriate, but they don't belong on a family discussion board . As regards the article, what I don't like about it is that it is mixing facts and opinions (and fairly irrelevant facts) together in a way that just doesn't seem appropriate for a quality newspaper - and the Guardian definitely is one. It just seems as if Stephen Bates has an axe to grind with the WTS. According to his posting here, he doesn't, but to the reader, it may appear so. Maybe it's because of the editing, maybe it's because I prefer journalism that supplies facts and leaves the conclusions to the reader.
I'm looking forward to reading the full version of Stephen's article.

many jws have become excited by the events of 9/11 in the u.s., thinking that this is a definite sign of the imminent end of the system.
we have seen online jws talking about how these awful events were "prophecied in the bible" and how this is proof that armageddon is near.
we have heard reports of local jws saying the same things, including many of our family members.
im just wondering how many people actually ARE returning.
I'd really like to know that, too. My own guess is that if there is some "positive effect" (in the sense of people returning to the halls and field service), it's not going to last more than a couple of months. If you have reasons to leave, terrorist attacks won't make them disappear.

Not a good one. This one sounds as if the author is simply using the UN incident as a vehicle to transport his personal anti-JW sentiments. Mr Bates would do better to stick to the point.
- Was it really necessary to scream "hypocrite" right in the article heading?
- Instead of wasting a paragraph on the "bird seed" thing (which does not really have anything to do with the subject matter, and which many JWs will simply deny), a more precise description of the events and a statement from the UN or WTS would have been called for.
