The longest prayer you had ever endured.
by african GB Member infrom personal experience i know it usually happens at the end of a district convention.
it would be either the do, co or an experienced elder.. they usually go through everything that was said throughout the dc and thank jehovah for this and that...... last year i used my stop watch to record the time taken by our do,.
by the time he said amen!

Without a doubt, it was at a District Convention at Dodger Stadium and given by Fred Franz...it went for 20 or 30 minutes and covered every possible subject covered at the convention! Sheesh....

"Short Notice" Talks or Demo's
by Think About It indid you ever have to give a "short notice" talk or demonstration?
didn't it put alot of pressure on you to come up with something, because someone else cancelled out or you could have been informed sooner?.
i was all the time put in this situation.

Because I was considered a good speaker, I was asked several times a month to do talks for "no-shows" or last minute cancellations. I thought I was really contributing at the time, but now I look back and realize how shallow those talks ended up being!

much of the information was borrowed from this thread.

Sweet,
According to my Bible, God was the creator of human procreation for the purpose of bringing forth children, so your argument about anniversaries versus birthdays doesn't wash. God never told us to observe anniversaries either. I am unaware of any "official" holiday status for birthdays...last I checked they were also celebrations.
Also, please show me where it states that first century Christians did not celebrate any holidays? I believe that many of those Christians were also Jews who still observed many of the festivals of the OT. Come to think of it, Jesus was celebrating a holiday (Passover) the night before his death.
To bring up December 25th as Christ's birthday is a "red herring" argument...would it be acceptable to celebrate his birth if we knew the exact date?
I respect your right to your opinion, but if you are going to put forth an argument, please have a defensible rationale for your argument.

I loved his suggestions for tradenames if birth control pills ever went over the counter in the pharmacy:
"Poppa Stoppa"
"Womb Broom"
and for pills that aren't 100% effective..."Baby Maybe"

Sis. Janet Jackson reveals shocking news on Oprah !!
by ShirleyW inwhen oprah asked if the kids were being raised jw and she knew that jdubs don't celebrate b'days and holidays, janet gave the shocking news that (i'd advise all with heart and medical conditions to take a seat now) she said that yes the children do (as ins always) celebrate there b'day and holidays.
the horror, i'm so totally shocked and stunned!!
you mean a poor family from gary, indiana hit the big time, and although the mother was a jw and the dad was not, and the kids were signed to million dollar contracts while in their teens .

I had met MJ numerous times back in the Thriller days...he was friends with my in-laws, as were Rebbie and Katherine. Last I knew, Rebbie was married to an elder and Katherine was always a peace-keeper in the family, walking a fine line that would have merited a talking to or worse for the R&F JW. MJ was PAINFULLY shy, but I remember him going out in field service wearing disguises. I can't recall if he ever was baptized, but he definitely was a publisher. The flap over Thriller was a big one...and it pushed a very sensitive MJ away from the JW's. It was disgusting to see the way people would feign over him at meetings and circuit assemblies...there was certainly a double standard when it came to "idol worship" amongst the "friends". I still get nauseous when I think back on it...

Sweet - using your logic about birthday celebrations being self-centered celebrations, how do you address the fact that EVERY married JW I have ever known has celebrated their anniversaries? How does that differ an any way, shape or form from a birthday?? They are both self-centered celebrations of a specific day. When Jesus was born, there was great cause for celebration in heaven and on earth...if it is acceptable to God to celebrate Jesus' birthday, why would we not do the same for our children?
I look forward to your answer...
