sleepingbeauty,
I hate to say this, but these guys make JW's seem moderate and reasonable! It was interesting talking to Shirley Phelps...she can turn it on and off like a lightswitch. One second she is pleasant and the next she is rabid!

right now there is a documentary on the bbc about louis theroux' second visit to the infamous phelps family.
it's a follow up to a similar documentary four years ago.. a considerable number of members have left in the last few years while the cult has become even more extreme.
louis has just interviewed young woman who has got out and started nursing.

new light?
the article states that jesus never said there would be an increase in earthquakes, but that they would be "great" earthquakes in one place after the other...like we have seen lately.
this is quite a change with the wts' obsession of trying to prove that since 1914 there has been a significant increase in the number of occurances, comparing fictious numbers from the time of jc until 1914 and from 1914 until today!
Could the increase we are seeing be as a result of the modern ability for instantaneous communication and media?
100 years ago, it would take weeks, if not months, to get any info from abroad...and nothing from more remote areas of the world. Interesting thought, huh?

From their website:
HAARP is a scientific endeavor aimed at studying the properties and behavior of the ionosphere, with particular emphasis on being able to understand and use it to enhance communications and surveillance systems for both civilian and defense purposes.

Thanks for the heads up cofty...I had to actually protect these crazies when they picketed in our area...one of the drawbacks to being sworn to uphold the Constitution!
This show is fascinating, so I can't wait to see the follow up!

Mickey mouse...do you know if this show has a U.S. enabled site to view it?...the BBC one does not work here. Thanks!
you may know i was recently dfd...i am a 4th gen...my two sons of course were 5th gen. the oldest a rebel from birth so of course dfd at 17 and he is now 24. my younger son now 22 has been the golden boy for the dubs.
pioneered out of hs for 4 years...was a miniserve all that time...and then the holy grail...a year at bethel...i mean the perfect dub!.
well shocker of shocks...he was dfd three weeks ago!!!
Hi oompa!...good to see you on here posting...hopefully all is healing well!
I knew of a similar situation where a then PO elder who had never so much as had a hint of scandal, was DF'ed for "gross sin" despite being repentant. The reason for the lack of mercy?...because he was the PO, he had to be made an example to the congregation! Though I am not aware of the exact "sin", I believe it had to do with having a cyber affair with someone from a chatroom. The "adultery" was never consummated since they never met in person. Weird, huh? He wanted to be reinstated from the git go, but they made him wait for over a year before he got back in.
I hope your son reviews his options before he reinstates...

I am interested if you are still offering...thanks!
i currently have an elder body who, for the most part, seems utterly complacent and disinterested in actually "shepherding" anything.
i can't tell if they are lazy or just oblivious to their responsiblities of being "teachers".
it seems like they are the last to know anything and always procrastinate on everything.
I agree with Mad Sweeney...most elders are exhausted. In most cases, they have to work to support their families, jump through the standard JW hoops of meeting attendance, field service, personal study and then add to that:
1) Prepare meeting parts
2) Handle congregation duties
3) Endless elder meetings
4) Calls day and night from needy congregants
5) JC proceedings
6) Sheparding calls
7) CO beatdowns
8) Etc.
I am exhausted just writing it down...why anyone would view this as a privelege to "reach out for" is beyond me. I guess the perception of power is a powerful "drug" to those needing that type of "fix".
here's mine :.
back in the early 90's we went to the sunday talk and wt study.. lo and behold, a friend from the 70's who was df'ed ( he had just been reinstated) was there along with his parents.
i had no idea that they would have been there.. one of my kids was getting sick, so my wife and i were up-down the entire meeting walking him around.
I went to a Memorial about 5 years ago with my "new" non-JW wife because she was curious what it was all about. I was bored to tears, and her only comment was that she just felt like she had "attended a tax seminar"...she felt it the most joyless and mechanical "worship" meeting she had ever seen. I was just glad to get out of there!!
