Real Jehovah's Witnesses (djeggnog, StandFirm, etc), I'm trying to understand you.
by pirata ini'm an active jehovah's witness.
i've obviously lost my faith, that's why i don't feel bad posting here anymore.
i'd probably be disfellowshipped as a division causing, teaching, apostate, faster than you can say "maher-shalal-hash-baz" (isaiah 8:1), should it be found out that i was posting here and did not repent of the things i've said and stop participating in this forum.

The Watchtower Society may encourage the wise use of a person's time, but I haven't noticed the discouragement of research outside the Society's publications because the Governing Body fears outside influences. That type of thinking is the thought process that Jehovah's Witnesses are under the umbrella of mind control. This is science fiction as there's no scientific theory, let alone, evidence for “mind control.”
Maze...I don't know how much more clearly the FDS can state their position??
“Does ‘the faithful and discreet slave’ [Watchtower organization] endorse independent groups of Witnesses who meet together to engage in Scriptural research or debate?—Matt. 24:45, 47.
No, it does not. And yet, in various parts of the world, a few associates of our organization have formed groups to do independent research on Bible-related subjects. Some have pursued an independent group study of Biblical Hebrew and Greek so as to analyze the accuracy of the New World Translation. …They have also held conferences and produced publications to present their findings and to supplement what is provided at our Christian meetings and through our literature. …Thus, ‘the faithful and discreet slave’ does not endorse any literature, meetings, or Web sites that are not produced or organized under its oversight… For those who wish to do extra Bible study and research, we recommend that they explore Insight on the Scriptures, ‘All Scripture Is Inspired of God and Beneficial,’ and our other publications….”—Kingdom Ministry, September 2007, p. 3

1pnt,
I do appreciate your "unique" viewpoint on independent thinking and action. Though I doubt the WTS or any Elder body would have that same appreciation, I do like your spunk!

1pnt,
I am still confused why you didn't answer Pirata's question? It wasn't accusatory or aggressive. If the FDS tells you specifically to not participate in any way, shape or form on apostate websites, how do you justify disobediance to that direction? You use the example of Paul to justify participation...do you think Paul would have gone directly against the Governing Body's (since JW's claim there was a 1st Century governing body) direction if told not to? Rather than "preaching" on unrelated subjects, I, like Pirata, would be interested in why it is ok to go directly against the FDS on this matter?
I await your short and direct answer...

According to the Pew Report, JW's had the lowest retention rate of any religion in the U.S. at 37% compared to highest rated Hindus retained 84% of their raised in, followed by Jews at 76% and Mormons with a retention rate of 70%. Even the much maligned Catholic Church retains 68% of their raised in members.
A couple of other handy facts from the same Pew Report:
1) JWs are tied for second place for a majority of females in the faith. 60% are female!! (first place are Hindus with 61%)
2) 42% make less than $30,000. This is the second HIGHEST percentage of the poorest cohort of all faiths!
3) JWs have the LOWEST percentage of college graduates and post-graduates of any faith surveyed! (no surprise there).
Though they may be growing at a higher rate than average, JW's cannot hang on to their most important legacy, their children.

I read Da Vinci code and enjoyed it...I liked Angels and Demons even more. The thing to remember is that these are fiction works and combine some historical fact with lots of literary license to weave fun and interesting tales. I wouldn't look to deep beneath the surface...just enjoy the ride!
