I remember taking my non-JW wife to a Memorial, and when it was over I asked her opinion. She said it was the most joy-less "church" service she had ever attended, in fact she likened it to going to a tax seminar! LOL

Radical shake up
by Mikejw inimagine if all the governing body resigned and a new set of brothers came in and said we are very very sorry for all those who have been disfellowshipped and disassociated over the years.
we know many mistakes have been made.
we are really genuinely sorry to all those who have been hurt and especially those who have died and been hurt by these mistakes.

Doubt highly that would happen...admitting wrongdoing, especially contributing to a death, would open them up to huge liability lawsuits.

Hip replacement on Monday. Wish me luck.
by GrreatTeacher inas the title says i'm having a total hip replacement on monday.
the pain has grown over the years and now i'm using a cane to walk.
after steroid injections and physical therapy, it was decided that a total hip replacement is appropriate.

I have had both my hips replaced and couldn't be happier! After several years of pain, I immediately felt better after both surgeries. My recovery time was not bad...I was hiking Machu Picchu 3 months after my last replacement.

God cannot lie
by psyco inthe bible does not say that god does not want to lie, but that he cannot lie or it is impossible for god to lie.
.
so, if god cannot lie, for what purpose and why did he create creatures (satan, demons, humans) who can lie?.

Nicolaou, I was merely offering what most JW's would say in retort to your "allegation".
They absolutely did not die on that literal day...I just see that JW interpretation would provide for several "options" to explain the meaning of "day". It is the same for Adam and Eve being perfect...I could anticipate their response being, "why would God create an imperfect image of himself?". In the JW mind, that perfection was theirs to lose, thus bolstering the "works" requirement of being rewarded eternity.

Hi Nicalaou...the argument could be made that Adam did die within a creative day. Another view is he died the moment he sinned, because prior to that he had everlasting life. Once he sinned, he was dying. All very metaphorical!

The ''dreaded'' birthday cake
by RULES & REGULATIONS inthe watchtower—study edition | september 2023. study article 39. let mildness be your strength.
11 if a workmate asks, for example, why we do not celebrate birthdays, consider: could he be wondering whether we are allowed to have a good time?
or might he feel that our position will dampen the company’s team spirit?

Almost every modern day "holiday" has pagan roots if you dig deeply enough. These holiday "issues" are more a matter of convenience to look different than the rest of the "world". JW's have no problems with wedding rings (definitely pagan) or having a large gathering on Thanksgiving with family and friends (because turkey is cheaper at that time of the year). The answer that the Bible doesn't mention things is a pick and choose answer to justify a specific doctrine...not a matter that is Biblically supported.

I always looked forward to John Paluso's visits...he was a kind, cool man who never made working with him intimidating or threatening. He gave great talks and genuinely liked helping people. I understand he left being a CO to start a family in So. CA.

So, 60 Years Ago
by titch inso, folks, 60 years ago, starting on september 1st, i believe, we, local witnesses in southern california, had the "privilege" of attending the "around the world assembly", at, of all places, the rose bowl, in pasadena.
(i think that it was an 8-day assembly) i was 9 years old then, almost ready to start 4th grade.
so, was anyone else, on this site, at that assembly?

I do remember it! I was only 12 at the time, but I remember working in the fruit stands and selling lunch items between sessions. If I recall, they had day sessions and night sessions...the one thing that stood out to me was how LONG they were. If memory serves me, that was a 7 day convention. I also recall the big buzz was that Billy Graham had a revival during that timeframe at the Los Angeles Colosseum. The combined attendances were almost 200,000 people. Today's JW's wouldn't recognize the conventions back then!
